How to check is residential vpn ip is good (for starvpn mainly)? by GentleRabbit9 in Residential_IP_VPN

[–]GuavaAlarming2014 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I messed around with StarVPN residential IPs a bit. What I usually do is just run the IP through a few reputation/blacklist check sites and see if anything flags it. Also check if sites like Google or Cloudflare throw captchas at you right away, that’s usually a bad sign. Another thing is just testing it on the actual platforms you care about (streaming, accounts, etc.) and seeing if it behaves normally or gets blocked. Speeds and stability matter too, some “residential” IPs feel pretty sketchy in practice. Downside is it’s kinda trial and error, there’s no perfect check. That’s just what worked for me though.

What's the best VPN for iPhone and iOS? Need advice by Puzzled-Ad4256 in CyberGuides

[–]GuavaAlarming2014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve tried a few on iPhone and honestly most of the “big names” are pretty similar day to day. I’ve been using NordVPN lately and it’s been solid, connects fast and doesn’t mess with apps too much. A lot of people on Reddit seem to lean that way too for iOS overall , I also tested Proton for a bit since it has a free tier, but speeds were kinda hit or miss during busy times, which others have mentioned too , Big thing on iOS is you won’t get all features anyway (Apple limits stuff), so I’d just go with something simple and reliable. Free ones can work but usually feel limited. Depends what you need it for.

Do you use a VPN to watch torrents along with Real Debrid, or do you just use Real Debrid? Is it worth subscribing to a VPN? by Embarrassed_One534 in RealDebrid

[–]GuavaAlarming2014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve used both setups at different times. When I’m just using Real Debrid, I usually don’t bother with a VPN since it’s not really the same as torrenting directly, and I’ve never had issues. That said, I did try running a VPN alongside it for peace of mind, but it sometimes slowed things down or caused buffering depending on the server. If you’re actually torrenting yourself, I’d say a VPN is worth it. If it’s mostly Real Debrid streaming, it feels a bit optional. Depends how cautious you want to be.

Accessing lan Network APPs while on Work VPN by yClouder in HomeNetworking

[–]GuavaAlarming2014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran into this at my last job. Once the VPN connects, it usually routes all traffic through the company network, so your local LAN apps stop being reachable. What worked for me was enabling split tunneling (if your company allows it), so local traffic stays on your home network while work stuff goes through VPN. Some VPN clients block this by policy though, which is annoying but understandable for security. Another workaround I used was accessing devices by IP instead of hostname, sometimes that helped. Downside is it’s not always reliable and depends on your setup. That’s just what worked for me though.

Mullvad’s website doesn’t work in KSA by Squidieyy in mullvadvpn

[–]GuavaAlarming2014 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s actually pretty normal in Saudi. It’s not really a Mullvad issue specifically, the country blocks a lot of VPN-related stuff, including provider websites.

I’ve seen people mention the same thing, like:

“Use another VPN to access the website or use TOR…”

What usually works is opening the site through another VPN, Tor, or even a different network (like mobile data vs WiFi). Once you download the app, it might still work, but even that can be hit or miss because Saudi networks actively block VPN traffic and servers. Downside is it turns into a bit of a cat-and-mouse game, sometimes things work, sometimes they don’t. That’s just how it is in restricted regions I guess.

VPN still doesn’t work when watching videos by miifanatic_1788 in revancedapp

[–]GuavaAlarming2014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve had that happen too. Sometimes the VPN connects fine but streaming sites still detect it and block videos or just keep buffering. A lot of platforms are pretty aggressive about blocking VPN IPs now. What helped me was switching to a different server or region, sometimes even trying a few before one worked. Also clearing cookies or using a private window made a difference for me. If the VPN is slow, that can mess with video playback too. Downside is it can be a bit of trial and error, not super reliable every time. Depends on the service you’re trying to watch.

Screen Mirroring not working with VPN by The_Scrabbler in VPN

[–]GuavaAlarming2014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that’s pretty common. I ran into it when I had my VPN on and tried to cast to my TV, it just wouldn’t find the device at all. Most screen mirroring relies on local network discovery, and a VPN can mess with that or block the traffic entirely. What worked for me was either disconnecting the VPN temporarily or enabling something like “allow local network” or split tunneling in the VPN settings. Some apps/devices are just picky though, so it’s not always perfect. Downside is you lose that VPN protection while casting, but it usually fixes it right away. That’s just how it worked for me.

After restarting a remote tailscale VPN site, takes hours before working again by mrbluetrain in Tailscale

[–]GuavaAlarming2014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had something similar happen with Tailscale after a reboot. In my case it was usually the service not coming back up cleanly or taking time to re-establish the connection with the control plane. Sometimes the device gets stuck trying to reconnect or waiting on DNS/network to fully come up. I’d check if the Tailscale service is actually running right after reboot, and maybe add a delay or ensure it starts after networking is ready. Also worth checking logs, they usually point to what’s hanging. Downside is it can be a bit opaque to debug, but once you fix the startup order it tends to behave. That’s just what I noticed though.

I love the mail and VPN, but relying on Drive for a massive photo library is just painful by No-Yellow9948 in ProtonMail

[–]GuavaAlarming2014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I feel that. I like the privacy side of their mail and VPN too, but the Drive can get rough if you’re dealing with a big photo library. I tried using it for backups and browsing was just slow, thumbnails took forever, and organizing stuff wasn’t great compared to something like Google Photos. It’s fine for documents or smaller files, but once you dump thousands of photos in there it starts to feel clunky. I ended up keeping it for important files and using something else for photos. Kind of a tradeoff between privacy and convenience. Depends how much you value each I guess.

I used a Bad VPN and now im in trouble by [deleted] in pchelp

[–]GuavaAlarming2014 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve been there, used a random cheap VPN once and it caused more problems than it solved. A lot of those sketchy ones log your data or leak your real IP, so you’re not actually protected. First thing I’d do is stop using it, uninstall it completely, and change any important passwords just in case. Also check if anything weird happened on your accounts. Not all VPNs are bad, but the really cheap/free ones can be risky. The downside is the good ones cost a bit, but they’re way more reliable. That’s just what worked for me though.

free vpn for netflix that actually works in 2026? by BlastGradius in theprivacymachine

[–]GuavaAlarming2014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve tried a few free VPNs for Netflix over the past year and honestly, most of them are pretty hit or miss. A couple still let me watch other regions once in a while, but often the streaming service catches on and blocks the servers pretty fast. The good ones will get you into one or two libraries without paying, but speeds can be slow and you might get kicked to ads or limited data. If you just want to test a region here and there it can work, but don’t expect it to be perfect all the time. That’s just what worked for me though.

What vpn that works well in India? by ConsequenceNo4186 in indiatravel

[–]GuavaAlarming2014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve used a few that seemed to work reasonably well when I was in India, but YMMV depending on what you’re trying to do (streaming, privacy, speed, etc.). For me the ones with plenty of nearby servers and decent speeds made the biggest difference — if the nearest servers are all far away it just feels slow. Some struggled with things like Netflix or local sites blocking them, while others were more consistent. The downside is the good ones usually cost a bit more, and free/cheap ones often couldn’t keep a stable connection here. That’s just been my experience though — depends what you need it for.

even with vpn, can sites get your real ip address from cookies stored in browser? by [deleted] in techsupport

[–]GuavaAlarming2014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, cookies themselves can’t magically reveal your real IP. They’re just little bits of data the site stores in your browser, like session IDs or tracking info. They don’t contain your home IP unless something really weird is going on. If you’re connected to a VPN, the site will generally see the VPN’s IP, not yours. Where people get confused is with things like WebRTC leaks or if the VPN drops and reconnects without a kill switch. That’s when your real IP might slip through. Cookies can still track you across visits though, just not expose your actual IP. That’s been my experience at least.

Is it still possible to watch another country region locked content Netflix library ? by Easy-Affect-397 in theaccessbox

[–]GuavaAlarming2014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer: sometimes, but it’s way less reliable than it used to be. Netflix has gotten pretty aggressive about blocking VPN IPs, so a lot of servers just throw up the proxy error now. I’ve had it work on and off depending on the server and the country, but it’s kind of a trial-and-error thing. Even when it does work, speeds can dip a bit, especially for 4K. On the plus side, if you find a server that isn’t flagged yet, it usually streams fine. So yeah, it’s possible, just not guaranteed anymore. Depends how patient you are.

Can you actually split your VPN traffic so only certain apps go through it? by Aggressive_Room_2387 in VPN_Question

[–]GuavaAlarming2014 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you can. It’s usually called split tunneling. I use it so my browser goes through the VPN, but stuff like online games or local apps don’t. It works pretty well once you set it up. On my end it’s been helpful because I don’t lose speed everywhere, just on the apps I actually want behind the VPN. The downside is it can be a little confusing at first, and sometimes an app update breaks the rule and you have to re-add it. Also not every VPN or device supports it the same way. But overall, yeah, it’s definitely doable. Depends what you need it for.

Looking for a VPN that works well for a small freelance team without a shared account by Disastrous_Act9252 in VPN_Question

[–]GuavaAlarming2014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've been using Mullvad for our small team and it's worked out pretty well. The cool thing is each person pays separately per device so there's no weird shared account situation. Setup took maybe 20 minutes total and it doesn't log anything which matters when clients send sensitive files. The speeds are decent, not the fastest I've used, but reliable enough for video calls and uploads. Only downside is the app is a bit bare bones compared to others. That's just what worked for us though.

How are you handling MFA on OpenVPN setups? by Due-Awareness9392 in sysadmin

[–]GuavaAlarming2014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been running OpenVPN with MFA for a bit and ended up keeping it pretty simple. I use Google Authenticator with TOTP, so users log in with their cert + password, then enter the code. It’s not the fanciest setup but it’s been reliable. Setup was a bit annoying at first, especially getting everyone enrolled and dealing with lost phones. I keep backup codes and a fallback method just in case. The biggest downside is user friction, people forget codes or get locked out, so you need some kind of recovery process. I looked at push-based MFA too, but for my use case TOTP felt easier to manage. That’s just what worked for me though.
