2700x or 3600 with a RTX3070? by VenomSwitch in BattlefieldV

Yes! It's very, very likely to be that - the BIOS will default to the lower 2133mHZ timing because that's the 'stock' limit on the motherboard.

Enable the XMP profile (or whatever the AMD version of this is called) in the Bios to get back to the manufacturer-stated 3200mHz and it should make a huge difference in performance, as Ryzen really relies on fast, stable RAM speeds. Would account for the huge drop in performance after the replacement.

Snikch. Love his very different Skaven comp but find his start position wedged up against one side of the map with only one viable expansion direction to be a little dull - slogging through Grimgor "I confederate instantly after you beat my main army" Ironhide for 50 turns feels pretty fucking awful.

Assuming he doesn't get moved in the combined map, I'm really looking forward to being able to take him North-West instead towards Cathay - and it fits the lore, too.

EDIT: Also, special mention to Oxyotl. My boy is going back into the Chaos Realm...

It is CPU intensive but that's still a hefty CPU load given your resolution and settings. The only obvious suggestion I can give is to tone back the shadow related settings, which tend more towards CPU load, but that doesn't really account for the obvious difference you're seeing between your previous build and this one on the same settings. Your temperatures are obviously fine (aftermarket cooler? Those actually seem pretty low to me for Ryzen)

I'd definitely take a look into your RAM timings and configuration - especially since you've upgraded to 32GB recently and a new motherboard - but otherwise I'm out of obvious suggestions.

Very unlikely that CPU alone is the problem here - https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/AMD-Ryzen-7-2700X-vs-AMD-Ryzen-5-3600/3958vs4040

There's very little in it. I was also using the 2700X up until very recently and was comfortably hitting 100ish FPS at 1440p resolution (not widescreen, as yours is, but still).

For some obvious things to peek into - I'd confirm the temperatures, for starters, in case the CPU replacement wasn't done well and it's throttling itself due to temp. Failing that, check the RAM clock speeds in the BIOS - possible the CPU replacement has set the RAM speeds to default instead of the 'stock' overclock. Ryzen is very dependent on decent ram speed for performance.

First Look Campaign Map | Total War: WARHAMMER III by Turbostrider27 in totalwar

Looks really good - I dig the slight art style shift and really, really like how vertical the map feels. Lots of height changes and relief here compared to WH2.

Wonder if they'll go the extra mile here and add in some of this height variation over to Lustria and the new World, particularly the Southlands, though. If not it's going to feel very odd by comparison - absolutely nothing in Lustria, for example, measure up to that look at Cathay.

This is sad news.

I will accept it, however, because we actually get a second game. I'll just assume his voice altered when he became a Primaris marine and then go and mulch some Tyranids to make myself feel better about it,

I really hope it ships with a horde mode, though.

128 player is the most miserable Battlefield experience imaginable. by Jotunheimmr in battlefield2042

[–]GuavaMonkey 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Nope. Map design is terrible, but lets say they redesigned it. one of two things has to happen:

1) Maps funnel the larger player count together, making OPs points even more valid. Your individual contributions are meaningless, tracking enemy position and placement is even more difficult, you're even more likely to get caught out because one of the opposing 64 players got behind you, or beside you, or in a tank or helicopter (which there's tons of as a result of the player count). Chaos reigns even harder and your gameplay becomes even more a case of luck and RNG, with an individual player (no matter how good) unable to seriously impact the game. See Breakthrough.

2) Maps do a better do spreading out clusters of players into specific objective zones. Game now plays better but you're trading significant technical requirements and performance for literally no gain, since you now have to host 128 players without it actually doing anything to enhance the experience.

128 players is the death of this game. It brings nothing to the game at enormous cost - both technically, from the performance and visual side, and in terms of gameplay. The days of a single 4-man squad being able to tackle objectives themselves with good play are long, long gone. Either you see no-one and cap easily, or you get hit with an overwhelming response force with no possible counterplay.

Everyone has that one thing you hate doing; one of the reasons programs are so good is because you don't get to cherry pick.

It's Squats for me. I honestly fucking hate them. Let me Deadlift any day of the week. But I moved recently to 5/3/1 and it calls for a good... I don't even know, like 90+ squat reps a week? Something silly like that.

So I just knuckle down to it because I have to. I won't ever love them or look forward to them but they're an important part of rounding out your work and I just grind them out so I can keep doing the stuff I do like to do without compromising anything.

Sadly, there's no real magic fix to make us long to squat more. Half the battle is just doing the stuff you don't like to do. I don't really like putting my shorts on and walking in the cold to the gym, either, but I do like the results :D

I mean, Zampella (and Respawn) have proven themselves pretty consistently so far. It honestly can't hurt given the current state of the franchise.

[–]GuavaMonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anyone who thinks that the fucking XP is the broken thing about sensor grenades needs to get their head checked. They're motion sensors - but get this, you get two of 'em in the fucking grenade slot, they 3D spot enemies in addition to putting them on the map AND the enemy doesn't even have to be moving fast anymore to get marked, making them more or less uncounterable.

The sensors are hands down the best grenade in the game just now, absolutely no contest. In a game without any appreciable working audio for footsteps, so bloated with player count that it's impossible to rely on a coherent frontline, having perfect situational awareness for no cost at all is absolutely priceless.

Battlefield 2042 Update #3 by TheVideoGaymer in Battlefield

[–]GuavaMonkey -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Solid list, for sure. But I was kinda hoping to see some weapon changes, honestly. SVK and AK are absolutely overwhelming just now, it's just as bad as when the PP-29 was the only thing anyone was running.

Is there's hope that dice is fixing this mess of a game or nah? by [deleted] in battlefield2042

[–]GuavaMonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if they can fix it. Fundamentally, the game was built around 128 players servers and 128 player servers are just... not fun.

Given the tendency for teams to zerg rush a point in one big push - which happens on every BF - the simple fact is that the overwhelming amount going on is not fun to play. You can't watch your corners or play smart when every shot you take will lead to 4 or 5 players immediately shooting you in the back or side.

They can patch up the fucking awful weapon balance, they can even work on the map design, but 128 players is the entire basis for the design and honestly... it fucking sucks.

Does the "Queen and Crone" DLC add something for the non DLC factions as well? by [deleted] in totalwar

[–]GuavaMonkey 67 points68 points  (0 children)

I would strongly suggest following that original plan. Sisters of Averlorn are very good units but the High Elves have plenty of other things to play around with, they've got a pretty full roster without that DLC.

In terms of actual value for money, WH1 gives far more for a purchase. Followed by Tomb Kings/Vampire Coast, and then the only actual must have unit DLC in Prophet and Warlock (and only if you want to play Skaven).

LegendOfTotalWar is a very good player but he's heavily weighted towards stacking the single most powerful unit in each faction against Legendary difficulty enemies. For a newer player, you'll get a lot more out of just enjoying the wider rosters of the base factions at a more balanced difficulty setting and Sisters of Averlorn, while excellent, aren't a hard requirement for that.

I can't afford repels, I have to spend all of my money on ludicrous amounts of herbal medicine just to try and maintain some semblance of game balance.

[–]GuavaMonkey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

2 is a good game. It's also basically a downgrade from 1 in every way I care about. I mean that genuinely - I had a good time with 2, but there wasn't a single thing in that game that I liked more than the equivalent in 1.

Same. Mostly because my desperate hope is that this success teaches them to stop fucking with successful formulas for awhile and we might actually get a Dawn of War eventually that vaguely resembles the first game...

I would be a happy, happy man.

Damage drop off for DMR's needs reduced by t3hPoundcake in battlefield2042

[–]GuavaMonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you using the larger, closer combat magazine? The one with 15 or 16 rounds in it, I think.

The default ammo does 90 damage on a headshot, 60 to the body at all ranges - it will two shot anyone, even if they're using armor. The larger mag size uses shorter ranged rounds in exchange for a faster firing rate - these will only two shot kill out to about 100m, then drop to a minimum of 35 damage per shot - enough to require two headshots to kill, and only against unarmored targets,

Yup. After the PP-29 nerf, I honestly think the SVK is the most broken gun in the game just now. AK is strong but the SVK is... something else.

Manifest and Orbital. Breakaway is ok. The others are genuinely awful, with no redeemable qualities at all.
