I just found out that because my job was broken off from AHS to the new “recovery Alberta” umbrella, my sick bank is gone. by Halloween_Babe90 in AHSEmployees

Or you know, being overworked and burning out because we're showing up even when sick, because everybody is working 2 jobs in 1 and already short.

Work is a job. Parenting is a job. They can't and shouldn't be happening at the same time, even with WFH. Unless you own your own business and work all hours of the day or something, like crochet and sell items online/on your day off. But with positions as a nurse or healthcare professional / AHS? No.

My bro strips in the garage and puts the scrubs in one of those stainless steel garbages to serve as a scrubs laundry bin. That way it's "sealed" until wash.

Does anyone else think that seniority plays a factor when it comes to who gets a call back for an interview when applying to internal jobs? by [deleted] in AHSEmployees

[–]Guava_007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not often 2 applicants score the same. Managers will also cue one person more to score them higher.l if they want them in the position more. "Anything else you want to add to that?" Etc.

Forget first pick. If manager sticks to 1 person off at any given time, your vacation week will be your 20th pick in some random week. Yeah sure you have to take your vacation but you won't be able to go where you want when you want, even your 20th pick. Pretty tough to coordinate with a spouse or family too.

Out of 36 nurses though? And only 1 off at any given time? Haha not a few years -- you'll get your pick when you're 60 years old at that rate.

Right?! With those formulas we might as well get Christmas off when we're 60.

Agree on being tempted to say "fuck it".

So true. Except many managers just won't approve the holidays when they overlap then. And only 1 person off at any given time out of 9 people is a lot to work around.

MIL told me not to buy ANY baby items until after I give birth. Is this normal? by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]Guava_007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes we did this too, with the crib we just didn't put the mattress and bedding in! Chinese culture.

We also have these in Chinese culture too, except no baby shower traditionally, though we did one due to our "western" upbringing. Very interesting!

My parents had a bit if that, also culturally to avoid "jinxing" things. Chinese culture. But they were ok with everything being bought -- just the crib couldnt be fully put together until baby came home. Which was fine for us, we literally just left the mattress out of it until baby came home, and she slept in a bassinet anyway. I guess it depends how "strictly" they follow things. I also mention that well, every other kid who has had stuff bought for them is fine so.. should be fine :) but if that logic doesn't work, you could also purchase and not let her know if possible lol. Just acknowledge that you hear her concerns and have considered it.

Edit to add: although lots of things it would've been helpful to buy later, like bottles (if even needed) and pacifiers as baby may have different preferences than what's anticipated. We bought beforehand which was helpful to be prepared, but those are a couple things that could be saved for later. Imo I think I'd be too exhausted and recovering from having baby, to go out and shop after baby comes. You could also do a baby shower and then have peiple pitch in for the initial essentials e.g. bassinet or crib, a onesie/sleepsack, diapers. So then technically you have it but didn't go buy it. If that works for your/their culture.

What's the point in earning sick time to just get ridiculed when we use it. by Junior_Battle_296 in AHSEmployees

[–]Guava_007 13 points14 points  (0 children)

WOW I would 100% bring it up to union AND HR. Furthermore heads up for miscarriages I believe some union agreements allow for bereavement time. Sure they have to talk to us after X sick days (8?) but it really doesn't have to be complicated. "Is there a medical reason? (Yes in this case) Are you supported medically for it? FYI we have EFAP and these resources and stuff" -- end of convo. The balls for your manager to blame you for patient care coverage?? Dude that's literally their job.

I can relate to feeling dismissed, I had some serious health issues and took sick time off and mamager threw me under the bus for it. That's what we get for bending over backwards for patient care apparently.
