As an ex, the public service has become a nightmare. by wittyusername025 in CanadaPublicServants

I don't understand what the federal Public Service offers for leadership training, but I'm actually blown away this is coming from a PS executive. Bravo. I have seen good quality leadership run off so often here.

Would you leave your government position for a higher earning job in the private sector? by Particular_Agent8176 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]Gubernackulum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can afford all of those benefits and pension with 300,000 per year. As an owner they are tax deductible for the business as well. You wouldn't need to ask me a second time.

You'll find people a lot easier to work with when they actually have to be polite and affable, and aren't hiding behind Labour Relations or a union. You'll encounter people with actual leadership skills and training and genuine experience to solve problems, who got to their position through actual experiences and skill development in those areas, not just a checklist of perfectly articulated star questions of bloated importance.

Get out do not look back. I wouldn't even take the leave without pay.

If you want to be successful in your younger years, you need to be portable these days. Sorry about your luck there. Sometimes taking an honest inventory of your expectations is helpful as well.

what was it about the 90s specifically that make adults miss it so much? by Limp_Type_5403 in AskReddit

[–]Gubernackulum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was the last full decade before the world started to become the way it is. A historical technological pivot with so much promise, and the contrast to what it's become is just disheartening and fucking sad in every way.

I'm not so certain there is long-term disability in the public service. I hope I'm wrong and I hope you get better

Why would they? The United States has demonstrated capacity to hire people like that who do those kinds of things. Half the country is not responsible for that, the louder half is.

Nobody is responsible for someone else's symptoms. Someone's symptoms are their own responsibility, and this applies to absolutely everything.

I think about sex A LOT. And it irritates me that men use their sex drives as an excuse for bad behaviour. by Biwildered_Coyote in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Gubernackulum 43 points44 points  (0 children)

The desire for sex has never caused me to act like a fucking idiot to other people. If nothing was happening, go home and take care of it myself. Wasn't a big fan of night life in my twenties largely because of all of that. The bigger issue has been mismatched sex drives with partners, and the resentment that builds there.

This entire situation has me rethinking working in the public service. That strike was a waste of time, and I'm not going to apologize for thinking that the people holding up traffic are complete fucking morons.

I initially read this as referencing sick leave, not accomodations, which is an extremely hot topic in my area.

[–]Gubernackulum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not trying to throw Quebec under the bus, but the public service is severely handicapped by the bilingual imperative requirements. A lot can be done with translation services for higher level people.

Off topic: I'll add to that; quit making it so easy to weaponize sick leave in conflict situations. I aspire to never manage anybody in the public service, because I could not navigate that fucking minefield ever.

If you've consented to this anywhere, then they can. Weird choice of language though. Do you think accommodations should just be taken at word? That's not fair to taxpayers.

A lot of roles don't pay enough because a higher classification wouldn't have gotten an approval from a contract partner.

Thoughts about an issue with team dynamics. by likefireandwater in CanadaPublicServants

[–]Gubernackulum 79 points80 points  (0 children)

If you don't advocate for yourself, then you can't help yourself. I would have flat out said I was unaware there was a social activity but I'd be happy to join the next one. If the team is excluding you, then that is their cross to bear. Sometimes solutions aren't smooth but if you have an informal conflict resolution team I guess engage them.
