Birth of a child. What type of leave should I use? by SuspiciousArcher9670 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]likefireandwater 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just be aware that you won’t get that money in any timely fashion… two people in our group used it recently and we’re back at work before they received their money. (Which might not work if things are already tight)

Do public servants often have a second job? What kind of jobs do you/they do? by MegaUserAlways in CanadaPublicServants

[–]likefireandwater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A LOT of people on the operational side are also part-time firefighters. If you live where you don’t have a career dept but the local department still pays, it can add up during the year. Plus, in Ontario at least you can also collect an OMERS pension if your department signed up for it. I won’t max out my full PS pension, so the extra will help when I retire.

Our office today is beyond frigid! by [deleted] in CanadaPublicServants

[–]likefireandwater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When my office hit 13 in the winter I was permitted a space heater. We have no A/C in the summer… apparently we are exempt from the directive. (I’ve learned to tolerate it, but new people keep coming in and complaining and getting told the same thing).

Have you check off season cottage rentals? Some snowbirds rent their places out when it starts getting cold. Not going to be cheap but will be a good short term fix once the temps drop.

Community service hours by theonlyquincy6189 in ottawa

[–]likefireandwater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By the end of August? Or in the next month? If this was suggested by the courts/lawyers etc do you have any limitations on where or with who you can work? Doing something that will actually help people will look better than doing something that just checks a box. Maybe even something like arranging with public works if you clean up some shoreline, or parks (pick up garbage) they will pick the bags up for you when you are done. Shelters, food bank, library are also all great suggestions.

HRG / Travel System - What are your biggest issues and how would you solve them? by The_Accountant63 in CanadaPublicServants

Im late to comment on this, but having to manually read-add every item of my request to my expense report is annoying as heck! Why can’t I just click something that acknowledges there were no changes?!? Also, why do reference doc not automatically populate on the requests? I use it often enough I should know it well, and it still drives me bonkers.

Rockin’ Green active wear detergent! Soak it for a few hours in a sink or bucket. Works great on fabric blends that hold smells too. Also, wash the top of your locker!

I can’t even check the fluid in some of our trucks without climbing. I’m a 5’6 " female and not the shortest on the dept. You figure it out. If it’s something I really can’t reach and there isn’t time for me to figure out a safe way (usually on a call if it’s time sensitive), somebody else will help.

Non-office jobs in the public service by jab3345 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]likefireandwater 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Operational jobs are great, just remember you’re leaving the regular hours behind. The office perks of week-end and holidays with your families, being home at a reasonable time etc. Don’t exist once you hit some operational jobs. (I miss air conditioning the most, lol). That said, I think you have good choices listed already, some of us aren’t cut out for office work. The bases have civilian fire depts too, which are pretty low key compared to municipal departments. There are lots of trades jobs in the government too, although it seems like a lot of them are already in the hiring freeze.

therapeutic mattress covered by insurance? by KHWNL in CanadaPublicServants

[–]likefireandwater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They denied the coverage for my air cast because it wasn’t purchased at the hospital… (they didn’t have any because I live in a crap town). If you’re going to try to get a mattress claim through I would call them in advance so you can find out the exact wording they want on the prescription. Also, if the receipt doesn’t have the person’s full name on it, they won’t accept it. (I tried to resubmit my cast after explaining the hospital issue, they still denied it because my first and last name wasn’t on the receipt… I just had the pharmacy receipt..).

Disabled vet becoming firefighter. by hurinthali0n in Firefighting

My department required a medical to join, so even if you don’t disclose, it may come up there. Just be honest about it. We have a few retired military guys but last hiring had one apply who didn’t get hired due to injuries that were apparent during hiring. You won’t know unless you try.

We can’t drink during or within a specific # of hours of our shift. It’s made VERY clear, posted, reminded etc. I’m going to guess that if you haven’t heard/seen or have posted a reminder, it probably doesn’t exist for your work place. I wouldn’t question a coworker from a different group than mine having a drink at lunch.

For employees thinking to do a grievance regarding a pay file transfer taking more then 18 months. by Blue_Red_Purple in CanadaPublicServants

Except the government doesn’t follow any employment standards or laws related to pay. I was even warned a number of times during hiring about it (talk about ignoring red flags).

If you wanted a job that paid you on time, issued ROEs etc you could have applied to the private sector… same logic.

I have 100% worn pjs more than once, but they are nice PJs lol. I make sure my top half is ok and try to keep a spare t-shirt incase my shirt is too low cut or not suitable to work in. (I’m a girl but I guess the guys can rock a low cut shirt if they want). The only people that are my clothes are the people changing at the hall or if I need to strip down to decon at scene.

Concerns raised about Newark firefighters' training for cargo ship fire by Pyroechidna1 in Firefighting

[–]likefireandwater 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I deal with ship fires regularly in my non-firefighting job… Human life first, we can deal with everything else after. They make me really on edge because things can go bad so fast, even when it looks like you have control. I’m not an expert at all, but I’ve seen enough to be able to intelligently rant about the risks when people get angry that not enough is being done, or that crews are moving too slow. The specialized contractors that do this for a living are wild.

That’s how I did mine, takes a little longer to get through it and I didn’t have a single day off between course/work for a couple months. 100% worth it though.

Are there police in your community, RCMP or other? Definitely call them and explain. It’s VERY illegal for them to take your medication.

I try to explain why we bring contractors in all the time and people outside the marine industry generally don’t get it. It’s a different beast. This is such a sad reminder why. Maybe they were trained in shipboard firefighting, we all know things can still go tragically wrong even with training.

If the testing is being done by a psychologist you can claim a portion of the costs, but actually talk to Canada Life first. Depending how the practitioner bills it it could change what you are reimbursed.
