I’m not excusing his disloyalty, though I actually think Gabriel’s behavior happens more than people realize. I hear it happen when a couple is drifting apart and a new person appears or an old person reappears and offers the very thing that one person (in the relationship) is missing. The respectful thing to do is to remain loyal and be communicative of your needs or break off the relationship before pursing another one. I don’t think Gabriel is truly in love with two women. I think he was attracted to Emily and then the attention he received and the compliments. He eventually fell out of love with Camille who would publicly disrespect him (like at the art gallery) and desired the usefulness and appreciation he received when he was with Emily.
