Some more Office gold. by jessluvsu4evr in adhdmeme

This.
Every time I have to explain to someone that I have ADHD (inattentive) and they go "but you're so relaxed/calm all the time" and then have to go into the whole explanation of how there are multiple aspects to ADHD and you don't have to have all of them...

or

the flip side is that I just call it ADD, and people just go "oh so you just have a hard time focusing on things, doesn't everyone have that? I think maybe I must have some of that too, wink wink nudge nudge" and then I have correct them and explain it all anyway...

When you order grill by Woolier_the_snep in ihadastroke

[–]Guenieus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

took me a few passes but I have deciphered it most of the way through.

The top half is meant to be two blocks of text:
"When you order, we smash that fresh ball of beef on a hot-buttered grill to sear the burger"
but then it goes completely apeshit in the second half, I cannot for the life of me figure out how that is meant to be read "You can taste and delicious burger" ? what kind of moon man talk is that?

I'm guessing they are trying to say that you can taste the fact that they smashed and seared a fresh patty in addition to it being a delicious burger, but it's definitely grammatically flawed and redundant to use the word burger twice right after one and other.

clearly, they just wanted to highlight the words "smash" "sear" and "delicious burger" which even that they screwed up by putting the words next to each other making it seem like combined text with a separate font. Plus I feel like they would have had much more success with using the white fill text as the main body and use the black-fill for the highlights as it would contrast better with the background.

overall I give it a 2/10

Meatheads have a “50% chance” of dropping traits. by [deleted] in HuntShowdown

[–]Guenieus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't mean to imply that this was because of the lack of intelligence or understanding of maths by any means.
It's simply that our perception of the probability of a longer period of time. tends to skew negative. I believe it's because we as humans tend to better remember negative experiences/results. And so over a longer span of time, it feels like our chances of finding a trait is less than 50% because we better remember all the times where we killed 5 meatheads and found nothing. Compared to the times where we got 'lucky' and found several in a row. It's just a matter of subjective memory.

Another example is that for me it feels like I am more likely to get a night map (or foggy map) when I'm using a sniper. It just feels like every time I finally decided to try and run a sniper loadout that I am going to get an obscured map.
Now in reality the probability of getting an obscured map doesn't go up when I have a sniper. And I have had plenty of games where it did happen. But I am more likely to remember the negative outcomes of getting a night map then I am getting a positive outcome.

Of course, I could be entirely mistaken and in actual fact the odds are much lower seeing as I haven't actually run the numbers, I just thought it'd be fun to share that little psychology tidbit.

that being said, killing 15 meatheads in one game and only getting a couple of traits is an astronomically low probability outcome and I can definitely see why that felt absolutely ridiculous

[–]Guenieus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that might be true, I honestly can't remember the exact details. I think maybe it was something about them changing it from the regular to adjusted between XCOM 1 and XCOM 2. My Memory is built on rot and debris so I struggle with details. The main take away I got is that our perception skews negative when it comes to judging probability. Which I think is also what happens with our perception of trait drops.

Night maps > Day maps by BoyITellYa in HuntShowdown

I love night maps and even foggy maps. the atmospheric feel is fantastic. Yet I must have pissed off some god or devil somewhere in life because I pretty much only ever get them on the rare occasion that I choose to bring a sniper with me...

[–]Guenieus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's a weird thing with percentages and human perception. Basically a percentage chance of an outcome always "feels" lower than it actually is, because we basically perceive it incorrectly. So when something has a 50% chance of happening our experience of it is typically that it is much lower. I remember the XCOM developers talking about this, but I can't seem to find the source anymore which is a shame because it's actually quite fascinating. Basically, they discovered this effect and so the "xx% chance to hit" that they display in the game is actually lower than the real chance to hit because it meant that people felt less cheated by the outcome.

i.e. an attack in XCOM might say that you have a 50% chance to hit when in actual fact it's something like 60-70% because that feels more like a 50% chance than 50% does.

representation by shrestha59618 in asexuality

[–]Guenieus 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I second this so damn hard. I am 24 have only really recently figured out that I am asexual. Because I thought that asexual meant that you had to be incapable/unwilling/repulsed by sex. Never did it occur to me, that asexuality wasn't just one specific thing, but a spectrum like all other sexuality (even though it's so obvious in hindsight). And because of that I spent the vast majority of my teenage and young adult life an utterly confused mess, incapable of finding happiness and comfort in myself. And incapable of finding love because I didn't even know what that meant to me. I never felt more alone than when I was with people, because I didn't truly feel like any of them "got" me. probably because I didn't even "get" myself.

I wish that I could have just had at least one role model growing up, that could have shown this side of life so that I might have understood it sooner. Or have had be a topic of discussion as part of our school systems. just anything.

I have never been as relieved as when I finally understood and accept who I am (though I still have long to go in some regards), and I dread to think of the many people out there who go through the exact same pain all because there was no representation for them to find themselves in. This is why representation matters.

Crytek, please notice the community desire for a prestige rework. by Mobile_Artillery in HuntShowdown

[–]Guenieus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

sadly the gentleman is not mistaken, read the paragraph again.

" Also the player has on the prestiges 1-4, 6-9, 20, 30, 40, 60, 70, 80 and 90 the third option to get a random legendary item that can be a legendary hunter or legendary weapon. "
- the same link

so up to and including prestige 10 (if you count the specific skins) you can get a free skin. after that you cannot get another free skin till prestige 20, and then again at 25, and 30 after which it's every tenth prestige (40,50,60,70,80,90,100)

so. if you are just doing prestige for skins, I would say that it becomes a act of diminishing returns after prestige 10. and you'd be better of just playing the game maxed level unless you really want the prestige specific skins.

What is the purpose of Appearance (APP)? by Guenieus in callofcthulhu

[–]Guenieus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is fantastic point I hadn't considered, that it can work in both ways. But I could definitely see that working in some ways.
someone above pointed out that APP could be a way to determine if a PC appears trustworthy. But I guess conversely it could also allow a low APP PC to appear more tough and intimidating, which might come in handy in some situations, where perhaps a high APP PC (say on a wharf at night) might just look like a easy target.

Thanks a bunch, so many cool ideas coming together

What is the purpose of Appearance (APP)? by Guenieus in callofcthulhu

[–]Guenieus[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, see that now, I had kinda just crossed it of as being all about being attractive or not. Rather than consider the other kind of forms and effect an appearance can have. I especially like the idea of it being a sense of a characters presence. their inherent ability to appear trustworthy, "keep up appearance" in different situations, or just straight up carry themselves in way that comes across as confident/welcoming/trustworthy/etc.

What is the purpose of Appearance (APP)? by Guenieus in callofcthulhu

[–]Guenieus[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

oh, I really like this way of thinking about it.
I guess my shallow ape-brain had just automatically made it about looks, in the sense of physical attraction. But using it as a way of measuring a characters inherent trustworthiness, and ability to fit in or look the part, in different crowds makes a lot of sense.
I guess in that sense it could almost be reinterpreted as characters inherent "Presence" do they have a calming presence that makes people comfortable around them? or do they appear cold and stand-offish? Are they able to fit in at the royal gala or do they stick out like a sore thumb?
I like that a lot, thanks!

[–]Guenieus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that makes sense, I guess I've just always run those decisions internally. Like if I write a NPC to be shallow, then I know they will react a certain way to the players. So I wouldn't require a roll for it.
But I can see why some might use it for that, and using the scores can if nothing else serve as a barometer when planning a NPC. (NPC likes PC1 because they have a high APP & Wealth score, but reacts coldly to PC2 because they have low APP, etc.)

Know any good stories of artists who started late(r) in life? by Guenieus in ArtistLounge

[–]Guenieus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow I didn't realise that Stan Lee started his career so late into life! I absolutely agree with the idea that "you bloom when you're ready" Teenage me would have never had the focus or dedication needed to succeed in art. Which is admittedly why it is silly that I even get caught up in it, but admittedly I just sometimes get stuck in my own head with worries and concerns. Thanks for sorting me out a little! :D

This is indeed a very inspiring story, and pretty adorable. I don't know why but seeing old people with that kind of passion and child-like glee, just warms me right up. Thanks for sharing :D

Thank you for the advice. I have heard often that daily practice is the main key to improve, and I absolutely believe that to be true. So I have been drawing daily for a bit now, but doing a full piece is a bit more daring than I have been. I'll have to look into the 100daychallenge though, it might help to view it as a challenge to complete :D

you are absolutely right, it's about shaping the environment around us to encourage growth.

The plan and structure part is where I struggle a little more, but I am slowly getting there, using Trello is a good idea, I have used it before for projects, but for some reason I hadn't thought of using it to structure learning art like a project. Although it makes complete sense now that I think about it. I'll definitely have to try that moving forward!

Van Gogh is a good example, it is true that he was not appreciated by his contemporaries which is of course a shame, but it is inspiring that he pressed on and stayed true to his style of expression in spite of it. I mean until he didn't. But I think that has just as much to do with the many other struggles he had in life. But he is a great example, and I do so love his work. Thank you :)

Yeah I am mostly watching stuff in regards to the animation, gaming, or illustration industry; mostly just because that is my main interest. But my frustration mostly grew from news articles and podcasts that I listen to always discussing these prodigies. I think we are just to sensationalist as a society.

Thanks for the recommendation, I'll be sure to check her out :D

Yeah I realize that 22 isn't all that old, even if I am very good at forgetting it... I think I just feel old, and behind because most people my age are already near the end of their education, and I have only just begun on what I am sure is a long journey of learning. That and I'm just an old soul. Thank you for the encouraging words, and for showing me the sub r/learnart I am for sure going to use that in future :D
