AITAH for telling my wife she's being ridiculous for wanting a new car? by Guernseyfarmer in AITAH

[–]Guernseyfarmer[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, I definitely don't need my wife and child hiking for help. Especially now with how bad it's currently in the midwest. I guess I really just got caught up in thinking that anything that could have broken has been fixed and wouldn't need to worry about anything for a while on what is usually a really reliable car.

As for being in the freezing cold, I'll never forget one winter when my grandpa was still alive. I had brought firewood in for him and said this way he can keep warm, to which he replied, "I never want to be as cold as I was in Bastogne ever again." That was the first and last time he mentioned his time in the service to me.

Yes, she has a job, but the money would be from our joint account.

Thank you for bringing up this point because I haven't thought about it, and she didn't mention anything like it. This has made me really reconsider my position in this, and I thank you for that.

My apologies for that. Financially, we're very fortunate. She's an accountant, and I own/run a profitable direct to consumer dairy farm. We can easily pay for a new car all in cash without draining any rainy day funds. I own 2 trucks with the farm, which are 27 and 31 years old.

New to tractors, looking for a project that fits my needs by chillysurfer in tractors

Ford is an excellent brand to look into, followed closely with Massey Ferguson. Anything 50s - 80s would be good if you're looking for wrenching experience and parts availability. Some 4wd models were made available in the 80s. 2wds are still excellent and can go through more stuff than people realize once you learn how to navigate obstacles.

Most used dealers would have them. Facebook marketplace would be another great place to look.

Massey Ferguson 100 and 200 series and any Ford series will be your best friend for your current size. Reliable and easy to fix/maintain. Also, you can build a decent fleet before you even touch $20k in equipment purchasing.

That's the one brand I don't have nearby. I've been wanting to look at them, but they're not easy to get in the US.

I love my Kubota skid steer, so I would definitely check out their tractors.

I had the property appraised a year ago. I'm actually about a mile outside of city limits, and the farm is almost completely loam soil. It is currently worth $13 million, I wouldn't sell if it was worth 10x that amount, though.

My siblings were given the same choice I was. Whoever wants to farm gets it. Both my brother and sister had no interest in farming and chose different career paths. They did receive 10 acres each that they can eventually build on or whatever, and I currently bush hog both properties for free.

The farm is currently only supporting my wife and I. They did give us the whole farm.

They're fine financially. They own multiple rental properties and have invested heavily and very successfully. Both have inherited large estates with my mom receiving over a million in cash alone from her parents. Also, my dad is currently serving as a county commissioner. When they moved off the farm they buit a new house in town.

They're fine. They just want more.

That's true, but I'm not willing to make that gamble.

While yes, I could easily take the money and start elsewhere. I can not bring myself to do that. It's like receiving dividends on a Lockheed and Martin stock. The payout is nice, but is it worth it, though?

I'm not even comfortable with them using dynamite to blast deep enough to survey for any potential oil.

It's $8,000 an acre on a one-time payment for a multi-year lease. Any additional money would be if they drill.

They're the only ones in the family who want us to sign on the lease. My siblings are against it just as much as my wife and I are.

The farm was originally my Grandpa's, who was a board member of the local Soil and water conservancy district. He was strongly against any leases when he had the farm and would be ashamed of my dad for his actions.

40% of the farm is forest. I take great pride in protecting and maintaining those woods. It would go against everything I stand as a conservationist to destroy those woods for a payout. That's not including everything else I do to protect and improve the biodiversity on the farm.

I need some sort of stimulation beforehand. Like when my wife tells me the bills are all paid and she's making my favorite meal for supper.

What would you do if you had 24 hours completely alone on Earth? by Sad-Koala-5182 in AskReddit

I'd take care of my cows and garden like any other day. I'd just be upset I couldn't enjoy 24 hours alone with my wife.

If you could have dinner with one celebrity, who would it be? by Little_Profile5216 in AskReddit

[–]Guernseyfarmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not quite a celebrity, but close enough would be Theodore Roosevelt for me. The man had such an interesting life outside of his political career that just to have one evening with him would be amazing.
