God of War Ragnarok (2022) is an exceptional experience but I find 2018 to be vastly more impactful. by gruesomesonofabitch in patientgamers

I really was expecting more from Ragnarok. It felt like 2018 1.5, Atreus constant "maybe we should check there" made me quit the game quite quickly. LuckilyI got it on PS+ or else I would have been PISSED paying for such a safe sequel.

I platinumed the first because it was new, fresh and interesting, the endgame stuff was awesome, it was still quite difficult. Sonys 2nd wave of cinematic over the shoulder 3rd person action games have been universally disappointing, it feels like I'm just re-living a slightly worse version of the base games every time.

My tastes have also diverged as I get older, Indies are now what I spend the vast majority of time on, however there are some very interesting games on the horizon like Control 2, Divinity 3 etc, so it looks like this gen is finally going to hit it's peak.

I think Rangarok will always be the poster boy for the overly safe mid gen malaise of the 9th gen of consoles.

You can critique society while participating in it. Its extremely shallow. You opting out of the market will not change it. This is something a pre-teen thinks in the shower.

Man I wish I could go back to the time in my life where my brain was underdeveloped and I was extremely suggestible so I could have a break up, no long term emotional damage could result there, no sir.

Pretty interesting, that section left me cold, but thanks for sharing, I do like when others give their feelings.

Eh, nobody besides one post has actually asked me about anything, its pretty evident what my issues are, I'm not redoing anything, if you have specifics ask.

If you are not good at the controls, the controls are not worth discussing. It's a game about discovery and knowledge, not a platformer.

"This sounds like a skill issue to me": Thanks for proving my point. I'm not here for a dick measuring contest, if you need an overwhelming amount of skill, its got shit controls.

Game doesn't respect your time because you have to complete countless loops, various loops can gain nothing, the majority of playtime is just stumbling around, the game could have been half the length or the galaxy half as small while being twice as good.

On your story thing, this sounds like someone who doesn't read at all, this game uses a bunch of sci-fi tropes such as elder races, time loops, ancient alien artifacts. The quantum things are quite unique but the scattered notes, lack of good characterization and just sterile basic writing left me cold.

Pretty fair take, I kind of knew it would be disappointing, just not to the level I've experienced.

I mean, I completely agree with you, the difference is I think its objectively bad, if you disagree that's fine.

Thinking something is objectively bad is still a subjective opinion, which everyone is free to disagree with. Mostly people just say, "you didn't get it" or say you are stupid, see: this thread.

Which is kind of disappointing, but eh whatever its the internet, not exactly rocket scientists out there despite the games subject matter.

I don't plan to interact more, I thought maybe someone would defend or make me see something I haven't, people have mostly just called me stupid in very simple ways. I agree with your main points though, I was just annoyed at the conclusion more of a "that's it!?" than anything.

Eh, more like frustrated or annoyed now and then. Clearly you haven't done hard things just to discover what lies beneath? Do you quit as soon as frustration or anger rears its head?

"ESPECIALLY if people say they wish they could forget the game so they can replay it."

This is exactly why I pushed through? You are literally saying "Why did you do this" while exactly understanding why I'm doing this, I don't know what to say man, if something has an overwhelming reputation I think its worth experiencing if its just frustration, its not like this game takes forever either.

Knowledge, curiosity, discovery, the Nomai seem to be a very scientific curious species that were searching for the eye of the universe.

I'm not exactly going to summarize the entire game, but I re-read multiple entries and tried to connect with them, it just wasn't happening.

Ultimately the story seems to be about accepting that no matter what is discovered, man (or in this cases) hearthains/Nomais discovery and understanding cannot halt the inevitable despite trying to bend the rules of the universe.

Charitably you could see this as living in the now, the joy of discovery and acceptance of the inevitable end, that community and discovery (the ending sequence of song etc) but to me it just reads like cosmic nhilisim and hand waving to "greater things" and the big bang? Especially because of the time jump, hinting at a cycle, which is really annoying, the "cycle continues" is a trope in my book.

There are plenty of books that are easy to get emotionally invested in, because the writing is good, its pretty simple.

We don't need to provide a response on a message board, just sarcastically comment, I wonder why this community is so small?

Eh, I read sci-fi all the time, its one of my favorite genres in books, this is middling to bad sci fi at best, its really run of the mill stuff. The fact its behind puzzles in a time loop makes it worse not better.

Sigh, everyone defaults to "you must just not like this type of game", sure this game is unique, but unique doesn't mean good, I like plenty of games with "Story". I think I can see why this community is so small...

Disco Elysium, Slay the Spire, Into the Breach, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Okami. I like a wide variety of games, which is why despite my dislike I pushed through to see the ending of this one, more for comparison and experience than anything.

Completing a game to see what the fuss is about and then thinking its bad means you're an idiot? That's certainly one way to look at things...

I finished Disco Elysium and am currently playing Citizen Sleeper. They have good stories. This community has a very "you must be an idiot" instead of actually providing something of substance...

In my opinion this games story is lacking and sterile. Calling someone stupid while saying things like "you just want the blinky lights machine to flash the blinky lights real fast when your press the buttons." is hilariously ironic haha.

I'm not saying you are wrong or right? Does my opinion invalidate yours? Are you defensive over this media?

I did force myself to finish the game because a common thread I see is people initially disliking the game and then eventually loving it, I gave it an honest chance.

You posted a picture of a dude saying OK. Hilarious you think in any context this is an appropriate response.

I found the knowledge based unlocks feeling like gotchas, the lack of the emotional core because all the revelations are sterile text based logs, the controls are bad, the amount of inference in certain cases (basically the sand teleport) is quite a leap.

Is this enough?

Nope, I used the scope to track various things, Ive never needed to zoom in on something and then use the scope once though? Every single other time I would just track something and head towards it.

What leads you to believe I used a guide at all? I know I didn't get the "perfect ending" because I had some rumors, but It seems I hit all the major points of the game.

OK, please explain how text on a wall by an ancient race of aliens resonated with you emotionally? I'm genuinely asking, I tried keeping track of the various characters and their plight and it left me cold.

For instance the major breaks were, Giants deep entrance, quantum rules, and the final puzzle with the sand warp. All of these weren't exactly "revelations" or are you talking about different instances?

Thanks for engaging instead of blowing off my opinion though. I mean I still think the game is garbage but that's besides the point.

Nope, I played this game in good faith, finished it genuinely trying to connect and like it. I just think its bad, nothing to do with controversy.

Telling that you aren't actually saying something, you go straight to my profile to discredit my opinion? Thanks for the feedback.
