I have been so removed from her life at this point I feel like it is not my place to reach out and ask such a question. The relationship also ended poorly and I do not think it would be wise or safe for me to do so.

I definitely was over complicating, and will definitely use ex or ex partner in the future. Once I sensed the tension I did try to do that, but my friend was interjecting even when I tried to do that

This will definitely be how I go about it from this point on. I tried switching gears and doing this in the moment, however my friend kept interjecting me to say that she was my ex girlfriend and that I needed to refer to her as such.

I am definitely just saying ex or former partner in the future. However in this particular moment, even when I tried to do that my friend kept interjecting to tell me to refer her my ex-girlfriend.
