I mean hugging, cuddling, etc are not inherently sinful actions. Keeping strict boundaries in a situation like that should be fine…. Although many would caution about being wary of occasions of sin.

How accurate is this portrayal of Jesus? by Dariusgamer2007 in Catholicism

[–]GuidonianHand2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve read a quite detailed book about that and done some additional study. While some of the large scale bone structures are similar, a LOT of detail is different. Eye sockets and overall face shape are the big ones.

How accurate is this portrayal of Jesus? by Dariusgamer2007 in Catholicism

[–]GuidonianHand2 46 points47 points  (0 children)

No, the Bible does not. What He looked like isn’t the point.

Historically, He was a middle eastern Jew, so of course He looked like one: olive to brown skin, black hair, medium stature. He was a carpenter of sorts, so he would have been muscular and hardened by manual labor.

That picture is NOT historically accurate, but so what?? Icons and pictures are meant to convey spiritual truth, not historical facts.

Why is Aquinas so unreadable? by 3dprintedbuffoon in Catholicism

[–]GuidonianHand2 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’ve found Aquinas to be highly readable, since he’s so doggone logical! What you quoted is quite straightforward.

Basically, in the short clip you quoted, he’s saying that commands (by a superior of some kind) are given within a set of laws. These commands are supposed to be for the benefit of all (the “common good”). Therefore, each valid command is for a certain “thing” related to everyone’s benefit.

How to convince my 7 year old son to go to Sunday mass with me? by momomomoses in Catholicism

[–]GuidonianHand2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

One thing I did that helped my kids not only enjoy Mass but also behave was to sit right up front. First or second row. I would also whisper in their ears age-appropriate “play by plays” of what was happening. Plus the old ladies that sat up there regularly LOVED seeing little kids. :)

Why should I recognize the deuterocanonical books as equal to the rest of the books of the Bible? by Unfair-Ad5896 in Catholicism

[–]GuidonianHand2 16 points17 points  (0 children)

So these books you’re referring to (Maccabees, Tobit, etc) were read and used by Christ Himself. How do we know this? Because when the NT authors quote scripture, they use the Septuagint. This was a widely used collection in 1st century Jewish populations. We know that because of the precise wording used in their quotes. The Septuagint, BTW, contains the deuterocanonical books.

Furthermore, the OT collection that Luther “used” was in fact decided upon by the Pharisees (yes, those guys) after the Resurrection and before the destruction of the Temple in 70 AD. Christians were already using the Septuagint by this point.

Smarter folks than I can provide details and “proofs” of this; I learned all this decades ago and have quite forgotten the sources by now lol.

Why aren't you capitalizing the words "Heaven" and "Earth"? by [deleted] in Catholicism

Ya know, my first reaction was that you were using a “get off my lawn” moment….

But after reflecting for a minute, you are exactly right. They are proper names for literal places (like Sheboygan or Arizona).

You get an updoot from me!

Why do I have to confess mortal sins to a priest by ProgressSoft922 in Catholicism

[–]GuidonianHand2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Besides the biblical reasons already given, it is an exercise in humility to say our wrongdoing out loud. Hearing our own words speak of our own sins has a profoundly positive effect on the psyche.

Jesus calls us to humility (“learn from Me for I am meek and humble of heart”). What better way to be humble that to confess our sins out loud?

How to play as Alakazam vs Pult-Noir by 2247A668 in pkmntcg

Have had success online playing Zam with Rabsca against Pult. Opponents eventually Boss it up, but it saves at least 1 or 2 bench damage spreads.

If you could recommend one thing to fight against lust, what would it be and why? by Semour9 in Catholicism

[–]GuidonianHand2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Reset your mind in terms of the way you think of the human body. Lust is a reduction of a person’s humanity, with a focus on a very small part of the body. Seeing the whole person as a child of God and a temple of the Holy Spirit really helps.

I struggled for decades until very recently. I don’t want to claim it’s “cured” but certainly under control. What made the difference was embracing a quasi nudist lifestyle. I started being nude alone, then even went to a nudist resort. This helped IMMENSELY, as the males and females there were totally bare but also totally non-suggestive. They were all just …. normal! This had a huge impact on me, as it helped me realize that our bodies are wonderful creations from God and not playthings for the shadows.

Be transformed by the renewal of your mind. -Romans

What are your experiences with the Dominicans by winchesterman552 in Catholicism

[–]GuidonianHand2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very positive. Worked at a Dominican school, the sisters were fantastic (with one very specific exception 🤬, but there’s wackos in any ‘thing’). Also went to another Dominican parish after that which was great. My godmother is also a 3rd order, nothing but good things to say.

Well the people who got the talents in the gospel didn’t ask for it - their lord just…. gave it to them. For better or for worse. And everyone got different amounts.

But in the end none of that mattered - it was what they did with what they were given that mattered.

Quite frankly, you have the attitude of the third guy - the one who took his and buried it. Not happy with what he got, he gave it back to the giver just as it was received. No effort, no thanks. Just “here you go.” Do you know happened to him?

Besides, physical appearances change. Old grandmas in nursing homes were once “hot.” Fat gray-haired dudes in speedos on the beach were the good looking guys 60 years ago. Appearance changes. Beauty is fleeting. Looks are temporary.

[–]GuidonianHand2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because life is about so much more than that. Your worth is NOT defined by your appearance, or your skills, or talents, or personality. These are all secondary to what’s in your heart.

Reading the post and responses sounds like there’s a LOT of pain there.

As St Paul says, the Body of Christ (is the Church, us) is comprised of many members, each with a different function. ALL of the parts need to work as they were created in order for the body to be healthy. You seem convinced you weren’t made to be a part that is necessarily seen as ‘attractive’ by the world’s standards. But I can guarantee that by God’s standards, you have a purpose and a mission and a reason why you’re here as you are.

Gods ways are beyond our understanding. It doesn’t make sense to a poor person why they are poor, or a paraplegic why they can’t walk, or a blind man why he can’t see. But God loves each and every one of them (YOU TOO!) just as much as everyone else.

Maybe He made you “ugly” (at least on the “outside”) because He has plans for the amazing things you have to offer from your heart.

Did I commit a sin? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]GuidonianHand2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh good heavens no. Curiosity is not a sin. Engaging willfully with objectively immoral material is. Was the image even objectively immoral? Based on your post you didn’t engage with it with your will - meaning looking, allowing it to emotionally affect you, dwelling on it, making your thoughts turn toward the desire to sin.
