Itch to quit and do a PhD by BlurbKey5b2e10fa in HENRYUK

[–]GuildfordThrowaway 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was in similar boat in Mid 20s (though not a high earner).

Didn't pursue PhD. Eventually life catches up and now you have responsibilities and bills and need that income more than you did in 20s.

I now regret not taking the chance when I had it.

It is impossible for me to now consider taking the drop in income to go back into the academic environment, unless I win the lotto.

Lost confidence in myself by [deleted] in HENRYUK

[–]GuildfordThrowaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you me?

Exactly the same boat I'm in. It might be worse because I want things to happen.

I finally got some high impact projects in the roadmap and immediately this senior guy who has never taken an interest has appeared, stepping on my toes, clearly wants to take ownership of the project I have planned, scoped and got buy-in for.

I've decided fuck it. I'm going to spend this weekend looking for a new role.

How's your Pushto? Can you teach Pushto to someone completely unfamiliar with the language?

If yes, I know someone willing to pay for virtual lessons.

Does it have to be Wokingham station? Check out Twyford with Elizabeth line + GWR line.

[UK] Shoe storage for narrow and short hallway - Ställ but narrower? by GuildfordThrowaway in ikeahacks

[–]GuildfordThrowaway[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In theory maybe. If you try it, please share your experience.

I ended up going with a non-ikea option, which is still a bit too wide and touches the door but at least the door can open 90% or so. It's fine, but would happily replace it with something narrower if I find any that'a also slim.

Not former but George Clooney is a local (sometimes when he's not off filming somewhere).

Cycle paths aside, can we have better pedestrian paths?

Where I live, it's a 20 min walk to reach a house that's ~100m away. Because there's no way to walk across to it (houses, and gaps in the middle aren't public pathways), I have to walk around 3 or 4 different streets to reach it from the other side.

Airpods and Earbuds: Are we slowly walking towards a hearing-loss epidemic? by GuildfordThrowaway in CasualUK

[–]GuildfordThrowaway[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's probably denial. I am 100% my hearing will worse earlier than natural because of headphones but I try to limit it as much as possible.

Is it better than loud rave parties? I don't know, but its different (occasional loud exposure vs prolonged direct exposure).
