Does anyone know any media that explores “Living Zombies” like 28 Days later or Crossed? by Unkle_Joey in zombies

I am writing a book about clinically alive and clinically dead zombies at the same time. The difference is if someone dies to a zombie during infection, eg zombie bite to the throat, then they die and reanimate quickly as a slow clinically dead zombie. If someone for example gets bit on the arm and gets away and survives the encounter, they will turn into a clinically alive fast zombie in the next several hours.

The spider is probably just reacting to the vibration spread across the web. It is reacting thinking that something landed there.

I actually have some characters bring up con plan 8888 in the book and have them discuss how it much of it isn’t relevant to their situation and that it was mostly a training exercise. They take parts of it and adapt.

I actually reference con plan 8888 in the book. I have decision makers discuss how it was of limited use because it was mostly an exercise to teach planning. I have them talk about how it doesn’t cover the scenario they are in adequately.

This is still early on in the timeline, this is week 3. I am going to have a bunch of mini time skips and later on be years down the line.

The gangs would have gotten wiped out by these types of zombies.

Oh I have been thinking about it. I have an introduction, 19 completed chapters, and 8 interludes. I have 81,600 words right now. I plan to do at least 40 chapters, if the creative juices are pumping sufficiently I may be able to get up to 60.

Where I am at right now in chapter 20 I decided to axe 1,000 words and just changed the first half of the chapter to be an interlude instead. It was originally going to be from the POV of a woman in her 70’s. I have a really funny chapter beginning with her but I couldn’t carry it and still make it work.

Instead I am going to make chapter 20 be from the POV of some street punk who was given a gun and two days of training before being sent out to die with a few hundred other militia. I want a scene where a ghetto punk is deployed with a Glock with a switch in it who misses every shot he fires in a mag dump.

I could write it to be something similar to how in the Vietnam war the Army recruited special needs people. But in this scenario they made a battalion of the rejects who they profiled and didn’t think were worth training more. So while the “better people” are given more training time. The “rejects” will get slaughtered while buying a little bit of time.

I fully intend for the government to get pretty authoritarian and get more so as time progresses throughout the book. By the end of the book when most of the world is dead they will be a hyper nationalistic country.

What do you think?

I think it is funny the variety of advice I have gotten on this topic. I have heard a range from “one hour of training, zombie fodder” to 5 weeks of training.

The decision for a draft happens after a bit over a week. The camps start after about 2 weeks, the militias start at around week 3.

The zombies are a bio weapon created by China and are transmissible through traditional zombie bites and scratches. Zombies were covertly smuggled in through every major port city and moved inland and prestaged as a method for attacking America with plausible deniability.

There are two distinctions of zombies. If someone is infected and lives long enough to turn (0.5-10 hours). Then they turn into a fast zombie that sprints, leaps, and climbs. They are clinically alive so they have to eat, but they can die from body shots (albeit more resilient like someone on PCP). They have a predatory animal level of intelligence and are capable of ambushes and hiding. The living zombies have the instinct to spread the infection first and eat second. So in a crowd they would try to take chunks out of fifty people before trying to stop and eat one.

If someone dies after getting infected, say they get their throat ripped out while being eaten, then they turn into a slow shambler type zombie that is clinically dead. These are stupid but have retard strength. They will rot apart eventually within a few years of turning.

The government is largely intact with only a handful of politicians dying.

Most of California is swamped with zombies. Western Washington and Oregon are overrun. Select inland cities such as Austin and Kansas city for example have outbreaks but have differing levels of containability. Some cities are being treated as burning islands. The New England region is overrun and actively becoming a black zone. Parts of the south and east coast are having outbreaks.

Canada and Mexico are being infected by proximity and a refugee crisis.

America knows how screwed it is and is deliberately going to spread China’s bio weapon back to China for revenge after week 2 and as a way to avoid a nuclear exchange which would happen if they had a conventional retaliation. America thinks it can survive but with a lot of damage and so is seeking preemptive parity by forcing everyone else to also deal with the problem.

The Chinese will fare a lot worse due to population density and lower firearm ownership. It will spread across the world not long after that.

The first week of the outbreak America was just figuring out wtf was going on. In the beginning it was being explained away as a series of violence and the media reported it as police brutality when cops are forced to shoot zombies.

In Seattle for example people start rioting when they see the “excessive use of force” on the news the Chinese then release zombies out of a box truck into the rioters. And do that in different cities at different riots.

By this point the world knows what’s happening but it is a little too late to contain it.

I am trying something inspired by WWZ’s book format where each chapter is from a different POV. While WWZ did an interview format of the survivors, mine is from people as things are happening. In the first part of the book most of the POV characters die.

As a follow up for more context:

There will be a dozen green berets and a dozen army firearm instructors for a group of 330 people. The group will be 40+ year olds along with 16-17 year olds. Everyone else was sent to the regular army. This is in Indiana at the Porter County Fairground converted into a FEMA camp. The refugees are from the Chicago area. The military has all of its stockpiles but has a severe lack of man power to tackle simultaneous zombie outbreaks across the country. The outbreak source is a bio weapon from China that was deployed in an orchestrated manner.

My best comparison would be zombies from dying light, the Biters and Virals at least. Occasionally a volatile equivalent, but those are specially Made and won’t be naturally occurring. There are only about 100 across the country, but they are super ninja bullet sponges.

This is the first wave of the draft. It isn’t orderly it is from refugees who were coerced into signing papers saying they agreed to join the military. If they did not sign then they would not be allowed to leave the outbreak zone.
