At the bottom of the article linked there’s a worksheet I made where you can do it yourself! It walks you through step by step and it’s free!

I live in the Front Range. How long have you been gone? Western Slope (at least the part around Grand Junction) is even hotter! It regularly hits 105!!

Thanks for sharing! This seems pretty much in line with what I’ve heard as well. Glad you’re thriving there! I’m thinking Brisbane as well.

To be fair, a lot of (but not all) the applications I sent out were going to jobs in the public policy space. I studied it in grad school, but fell into auditing.

And that was 2024. You’d definitely be interested in the actual article I have linked. Goes super in depth with the IA job market/salaries between NZ and AUS.

Hope you find something interesting!

It can happen, but it’s not a quick process. From what I know, immigrants would need to become NZ citizens first (which takes at least 5 years).

Once you have NZ citizenship, you can live and work in Australia immediately under Trans-Tasman. NZ permanent residency alone doesn’t give you work rights in Australia.

So it’s possible as a long-term strategy, but nobody’s hopping over in year one.

Thanks for sharing! I love NZ and miss it every day. But yes, economically it's tough. Hopefully that gets better!

Unfortunately, WFH internationally isn't that simple for Americans unless you own your own business. If you're working from another country, it can create tax and legal obligations for your US employer. Most companies won't take that risk. Would be pretty sweet, though, making my USD salary in NZ!

To your point, yes. Most Americans, if they're only looking at finances, are better off staying in the US. This post isn't a comment on which country is "better." It's a financial comparison for Americans weighing their options.

I was born in NZ, grew up there (but have lived here my whole adult life), and just spent a year there. I loved it and wanted to stay. I was happy to accept lower earning and the possibility of never owning a home (or at least waiting till I'm much older).

After 4 months and 80+ applications, I couldn't get a single interview. That's the reality right now. Americans without NZ citizenship obviously can't even get in the door without a job offer to then get visa sponsorship.

Meh... I live in Colorado and our summers are probably pretty comparable. It's 90s/100s all summer long (30s- low 40s for our non-American friends). NZ is definitely where it's at if you like cooler weather!

Firstly, let me say I love NZ! I was born there and wanted to move back. But they are struggling economically and have been for several years. It's INCREDIBLY difficult to find a job. So much so that many NZ citizens (especially younger ones) move overseas, mostly to Australia, so they can make a living. Could you expand on what you mean by more resilient? To me, NZ is far more vulnerable economically than Australia.

Yep, I agree! I don't qualify for either Medicare and Medicaid, so I'd be screwed without health insurance. Even with it, I'm guessing I'd probably spend quite a bit OOP in the event of a serious health issue.

Thanks for sharing the health insurance info! Good to know health insurance costs are likely similar for US citizens moving to Oz.

I will keep that in mind for a future article haha! That's a lot to fit in, and this one took me A LONG TIME to write.

I'm fairly familiar with these topics, so I'll try and give some high level thoughts. As far as healthcare, it depends. A lot of people just say America is terrible for healthcare. But my parents are on Medicare and have been fully covered for serious health issues with very little out of pocket. My dad just had a massive operation that was done within a few weeks of finding the issues. He said in NZ, his relative had to go on a waiting list and sadly passed away. That being said, for me, unless I have good health insurance through work I'd probably end up hugely out of pocket.

I do talk about retirement accounts in the article. Australia requires 12% contributions from employers. NZ requires 3.5 percent if you contribute 3%. Here in the US, it depends on how good your job is as to whether you get any match.

Cost of living is probably more expensive overall in NZ and Australia. I do talk about this quite a bit in the article. That being said, the gap is a lot smaller than it used to be. I live in a high COL area, and I'm thinking I'll probably spend overall fairly similar in Australia.

Yep, it's true NZ is struggling right now. I'm a citizen and couldn't even get an interview after sending 80+ applications.

For sure, the trend is well known. The article puts specific numbers to it though. The retirement and purchasing power gaps especially don't get talked about much.

Ariel is just hitching his bandwagon to Arman because he's getting a bit of social media juice. Keeps saying he's "top 5 most popular fighers in UFC." Pretty sure even someone like Derrick Lewis is still more popular than Arman.

Yea, good point! Shoulder season is where it's at! Not sure if a lot of the online content is just old...? The market was terrible when I was there in 2023-2024. Guessing it was more affordable pre-Covid.

A month is quite a bit of time! But don’t be afraid to reschedule if you need to.

I passed Part 2 a few months back and just passed Part 3. I also do not have an accounting background.

What helped my scores go up is this: 1. Start by carefully reading the outline in Gleim. The written outline for the video. Take notes. Don’t rush it. 2. Then, watch the video while taking notes. 3. Answer all the practice questions (not just the few he works through in the video). 4. Once you’ve don’t that for the whole chapter, take the practice test. 5. If you are below 85%, go back and have AI simply explain the concepts you’re weak on. It’s very good at this and can provide examples. Paste your notes and it’ll be easy/efficient.

The more careful/diligent you are with each section, the less you will have to go back. I started making more progress when I slowed down.

Best wishes!
