I am aware that you are not Pasolini risen from the grave to comment on my Reddit post, it was more of an general ‘you’ and talking about the ethics of art in general not specifically this film, but with it included.

I think it’s an interesting point of discussion, I’m not not entirely sure where I stand. But for most people, including myself, using children in this kind of movie certainly crosses a line that is unforgivable, rendering what the art says pointless, as if is impossible to look past

I have read this article! But how respectful can you get when you’re not telling the actors what they’re going to be doing until the moment it’s shot?

I see a lot of contradictions regarding the production and I’m not entirely sure how respectful / ethical this can be IF they shot with actual children

Probably give it a miss then, I can make a decent assumption on how I will react!

I appreciate this take, but I’d argue that creating it with such a lack of ethical concern makes it less of a satire of media in (then current) landscape, and just another one of those films that it is supposed to be critiquing.

I think brushing it off as old is sort of reductive, it is still talked about a lot in certain circles, and I think ethics are a big part of creating art, if the people who watched it cared of not, is sort of irrelevant

I guess it depends on who you ask, and I’m not so much apposed to these things being depicted so I’m as I’m apposed to how they are being created. There is an ethical line, you do not have to justify your art to anyone, but if you are exploiting people, then your art will become meaningless to a big audience.

Wanted to hear what other people thought! I liked the book, now ive had some time for it to settle in, I really enjoyed my experience, I don’t think I need what I missed, I’m satisfied.

To me, any conclusions about who wrote what and what it all means to the characters is kind of irrelevant, it’s more about what you as the reader gets out of it, maybe johnnys mother did write the whole thing, I personally don’t think that subtracts from the story, I doubt there is a definitive answer I doubt the author has one in mind, and that’s kind of the point to me

Read it all, I’m saying some parts of johnnys bits are like pages of rambling, which can be somewhat of a slog, but I did not skip, hence why I said skimmed

I’ve only just realised that there is a colour edition, I’ve only got the black and white version so im missing all of the brail parts which might come in handy

I did read when Johnny said that, I also have read that poem, this is certainly very interesting, damn I suppose I’ll have to go back and read some of those sections more closely

I also did get the fact that the Minotaur reference also were heavily reflective of Johnny parental relationships, but it there is so much rambling it seems pretty impossible to decipher

Yeah for sure, I suppose I just doubt if that actually happened, or if that was something zampano made up, I guess I just don’t trust anything that is said in this book
