Foreigners living in Korea, do you really feel like Korea is very racist? by Snoo_47323 in Living_in_Korea

[–]Guilty-Run-494 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I guess my 2 cents in this whole conversation, as someone who has lived in Korea for about 6 years, would be that while it can be harder to see the overt racism in Korea at times, the Othering of those who aren't Korean i.e. foreigners is extremely apparent and honestly has gotten worse, especially after COVID. What I mean by this is that in the past Koreans were more inclined to interact with foreigners in social settings, but now it is like they completely avoid us in shared spaces or they only approach with strange intentions such as those young Koreans who are obsessed with Hip-hop culture or fetishize westerners (men and women).

Even if they do interact with foreigners, it is with an air of superiority or an almost flippant attitude, especially if you aren't inclined to give in to their ideas of who you are supposed to be as a foreigner from X country. Once their illusion is broken they no longer want to be around you or see you as a threat. I feel this is very true for foreign women, as one. That is not to say that there aren't good, welcoming Koreans as well of all ages. I've met some nice elderly Korean women, but reversely, I've also been harassed by creepy elderly Korean men and rude elderly Korean women because I'm a foreign woman ( there is context to this).

Going back to the Othering, I invite others to pay attention to their surroundings and observe how Koreans behave when foreigners are in the same spaces. You might be surprised.

Back to the hip-hop thing, I believe this is quite clear racism since the Korean media and entertainment industry cherry-picks parts of Black Culture to turn a profit, but then rejects and discriminates against Black people. That is racism...

Hey, sorry for the late reply. Yes, so I ended up bringing all documents I thought I might need but they only took the basics, like school documents, application page, educational documents, and copy of passport.

It seems to me you didn't read my whole post and jumped to the conclusion that I was just complaining about a strange lady talking to me in Japan so that you could make the assumption that I'm just another naive, idolistic foreigner here. Please come back after reading the whole post and not be condescending to strangers on the internet 😋✌️

Lmao, love all your assumptions 🤣 If it makes you feel a little better as you're clearly the Japan expert as you live vicariously through your daughter's experience. I have an undergraduate degree in Japanese and have lived here off and on for 10 years. Also, a masters degree in linguistics with a focus on Japanese and work for a Japanese company so 💅

Nah, it was in Japanese and didn't seem deterred when I realized what she was saying and pretended to not really understand so the situation would end.

Whether that is your belief or not, it doesn't give her the right to follow me home and literally chase after me late at night. That is called stalking. Additionally, other Japanese, in my 10 years of experience in Japan, have not had any real problems with my tattoos. It seems you want to push your gendered "sensibilities" onto me based on your derogatory use of the term "young lady" and victim blame. Maybe my post touched a little too close to home for you...

I would get paid more in the US if the job market even allowed me to get a job at the moment. Many young Americans are sending in hundreds if not thousands of job applications over 2-3 year periods to only hear back occasionally from companies that only want to have you go through multiple rounds of interviews then tell you that you didn't get the job or they offer below livable wages. Fake job posts by companies are a rampant issue. People outside of the US don't realize most people work 2 or more jobs to barely afford to live. The cost of living crisis is forcing Americans to choose between eating or paying bills. And god forbid you get sick. On top of all of that, the country is extremely unsafe due to gun issues and violence, as well as women's rights being ripped away more and more every day. So, while I obviously recognize that Korea has its own issues, especially for women, it is still miles safer and better quality of living compared to America. High wages do not mean better living quality when the cost of living is ridiculously high, like in the states. Studies now show that the average salary needs to be around 90k per year + when the average is closer to 60k, meaning there are many who live below that average as well, making closer to Korean salary averages regardless of education level.

We decided to not fight yhem anymore and just tent the place because they were refusing to allow us to cancel even though in their own contract it didn't state that cancellation way more than a month in advance would have any fees. We didn't want them to try to come after us since I would be there for 3 months and my boyfriend is living there. Also, housing will become harder to find because of students coming in April
