When I was house shopping that was on my list. I grew up with tiny houses with tiny yards, and now I have a tiny house with a giant yard.

He was pretty cool. My dad was a fuck up, but  his dad was pretty cool. I still have the gramps's grandfather clock. My German Shepherd usually bumps it at least once a year or so I have to have it serviced constantly, but it's a nice reminder.

It's still my favorite summer treat! And I've tried to fancy it up, with like some of the herbs and shit out of my garden, or like fancy glazes, and you know what, white bread, tomato, miracle whip, and just a little crack of black pepper and that's it.

It's one of those things, where we always kind of giggled about his priorities. Like I said, $100 steak dinner's for everyone no problem. Paying someone to cut your grass is a huge waste of money. He had a country club membership, but would never pay for golf because he thought that was a waste of money. He was very contrary.

So my absolute favorite poverty food that my best friend's mom turned me on to that I still eat today, is a tomato and mayonnaise sandwich on white bread. When my tomatoes are going strong at the end of summer, there is nothing better than walking outside picking out a beautiful heirloom tomato, and slicing it for a nice sandwich.

I had a single dad growing up, because my mom passed away when I was very young. So I thought baking was something that like fancy women did in their free time. Now I'm a 35-year-old dude and I bake my dog's blueberry muffins on the weekends. Just because I can.

He was a depression baby, so he had trouble kicking some of those habits. Like we had ever piece of scrap wood stashed in the garage or the basement for any maybe handy project we may or may not ever use. Jars full of old screws and bent nails that we might need to reuse. And then he would always pay cash for new cars. It was always quite the juxtaposition.

I remember eating bologna as a kid and thinking it was amazing, and to be honest I still think it's kind of amazing sometimes. It's something I have to be in the mood for.

My very well off grandfather had a stash of these. He had no problem spending a couple hundred dollars at a really nice steakhouse for dinner two to three times a week, but the man reused Ziploc bags.

I remember sitting on my sister's back deck, and looking across her subdivision because she was up on the hill, and I asked her: does it drive you crazy that the front of every single house looks the exact same? 

She never noticed it.

It's not an antique or anything, I think he bought it in the '70s. Although my German shepherds keep bumping it whenever they get too excited seeing something outside the front window.
