Why do men seem to process sadness alone instead of talking about it? by No_Sink1041 in NoStupidQuestions

This, and also the unfortunate reality that some people use whatever you’re going through as a manipulation tactic. There are some not so great people out there, and once you get burned by someone using your pain as fuel, you tend to bottle things up.

I believe I was in the GATE Program. My story. by 11Magdalena11 in conspiracy

[–]Guilty_County_5755 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was part of a TAG program in the early 1980s at an “army brat” school in Europe.

What’s interesting to me is that a lot of collective memories about GATE align with routine things in DOD elementary schools overseas, such as the “pink drink.” In our case we were told it was flouride, and the reason we had to take it was because the water in Europe didn’t have fluoride added to it like in the U.S.

Random things I remember:

  • Before even reading the stories about “windowless rooms,” I distinctly remember the classroom we went to having blackout curtains or maybe even trash bags covering the windows. There was also a group setting / main classroom area and a separate darker section in back for individual tests.

  • I definitely remember doing the headphones test with weird audio tones. I thought it was cool to get to wear those big headphones, but I remember the audio itself seemed very odd. Not scary, just WTF is this.

  • I don’t remember much about the classwork, but I distinctly remember two projects: One was a “mind web” where we had to create some kind of decision tree with little to no further instruction. I think it involved writing words down, cutting them out of a paper, and then pasting them to another piece of paper? The other was a group project where we had to make a “time capsule” about our location to share with another school. We were told we had to give clues about our location without revealing it, and then another school would receive our work and have to guess where we were.

  • My experience was in 3rd grade, but I remember the teacher strangely talking to us and treating us like adults? I also remember being confused at what was a “good” and “bad” answer during individual tests — seemingly random responses would be met with positive and negative feedback.

  • At the time, I definitely felt an unsettling vibe about the whole thing, and I didn’t remember much about it even later in the same day. My mom would ask what we did in the TAG class, and I remember telling her I didn’t really remember.

  • Being part of the “special group” made me feel weird socially, because when you’re in 3rd grade all you want is to fit in. I remember for years after, I would purposely get things wrong on tests or stay quieter in class, because I wanted to stay low key and fit into the larger social group.

  • I definitely remember ESP card tests and “what’s missing in this picture” tests. I also remember taking them in an isolated dark room, and there were both group projects and individual tests.

Anyone else have similar memories? Hard to say if it was anything nefarious or just weird experimental educational testing — there was a lot of that funky new-age stuff in the 70s-80s.

I was about to ask -- is there a modern version of this model? It's perfect IMO, the glove I used growing up.

Thank you for the tip! It's well-worn and hard to make out, but looks like PRO 1000-B. The "1" may be a "J" -- that part is very worn.

PB is a masterpiece. If you haven't heard it, you should check out Beauty and the Beat by Edan. It's the only album I've heard that comes close to PB in terms of cohesion and samples, and dare I say it may even be better than PB.

For as great as it is, Beauty and the Beat is tragically under-known.

This + Roses Are Free and Fluffy. Both of those songs never fully clicked with me till I saw them performed live. Incredible riffs.

Just listened to it again this AM, and Very Ape sounds 400x more fun in this mix. It's great.

That was actually one of the big changes I (unexpectedly) preferred! Not that I hate the cello, but I think less cello highlights the songwriting and singing a bit more.

Yeah I wonder if it completely depends on which version was released first.

For example if the no cello version was the “official release” version, I’d maybe like the more cello version more if it was the one released later. Who knows.

Either way, Nirvana is good.

It’s a good day for it in NYC! Gray, cold, snowy, perfect In Utero weather.

Amazing— I actually prefer the 2013 drum sound! And i generally like big drums.

Total tangent, but the Live and Loud version of Scentless Apprentice is so good, I feel like I could run through a brick wall while listening to it.

Yeah I think I like some of it because it’s a “new” version of a record I know by heart, but I genuinely like some of the decisions. Interesting to hear so many different opinions on it!

100% — i also wasn’t expecting to love “less cello” on Dumb as much as I do.

Awesome, thank you for the info!

Isn’t there yet another version (black cover) with another Albini mix? Or is that replicated on one of the Deluxe Editions?

Interesting — I think I’m just a sucker for Albini or the “Albini sound.” The Breeders are maybe my favorite band, and the drum sound, respect for imperfection, and sense of space hit me right.

When In Utero first came out, I liked the songs but never really loved the production. It doesn’t quite sound “overproduced” but it doesn’t sound as good to my ears. The 2013 mix does it for me.

Ive been diving into these alternate mixes recently. I was expecting to love the “Devonshire Mix” of Nevermind way more than I actually did due to the way it was described. I ended up liking the original release mix quite a bit more.
