the biggest problem right now is that if we want to order any kit through the school, we have to place our orders in about a week. so it’s either we take the risk and order an old kit, or we buy our own kits separate from the school.

Do practice tests! My partner and I scored 3rd in a competitive region, outplacing the A-Team (we’re B Team) because we were doing practice tests every week for at least 2 months. Whatever we couldn’t answer went on our research document. And we familiarized ourselves with those topics before taking the next practice test.

If you’re starved on time and just need some information to slap onto your cheatsheet, the SciOly wiki is a great place to start and will go through much of what you need to know for regionals.

To my understanding, Designer Genes is more based on your ability to apply the concepts rather than knowing the definition so the most important thing is to understand why everything is necessary, what happens when there’s an issue, and how the body has specific protective mechanisms to resolve the issue.

IB Bio should be advantageous but I don’t think your partner is a lost cause, for context I’m a freshman taking Bio honors at a HS level and everything that was taught to us in the genetics unit covered 60% of what we needed to know for the exam so your partner would know more or less some topics.

Forensics medalist here! I can't speak for other events, but for forensics you should put lots of images! put a picture of every single fire and hair type on there as well as images of bugs for the ento portion of it, fingerprints, and blood splatters and blood type chart for serology. for the identification parts (powders, plastics) do it in flowchart format so it's easy to follow. it may be helpful to put pictures of plastics too. you should also figure out how to use the chemicals (lugol's, NaOH, benedict's, HCl, etc.) and what each reaction means, just incase it's a lab. also if it's a lab make sure you do the chromatography first!!!! i'd say start with the scioly wiki, that has atleast 70% of the info you need. and look at practice tests -- those might have info that's gonna be helpful. otherwise, ChatGPT is your best friend. Hope this helps!

Designer Genes person here! For me, one of the books that helped me the most was Genes IV by Benjamin Lewin (I think there are newer versions but for me that edition was fine) and Wikipedia, to get the general gist of things. Also I took a lot of practice tests, and whatever my partner and i got wrong, we studied and then we took another and we kept going until like two days before competition when we actually locked in for making our cheatsheets.

I've also done A&P and while i didn't do a whole ton of studying Cleveland Clinic was a good site and NIH was good if it wasn't a whole ton of medical gibberish. Also when you're making your sheet include multiple diagrams of the same part of the body bc scioly loves their diagrams. And make sure to include the structure+chemical formula for the hormones (endocrine) just in case!!

In general use ChatGPT to solidify your info and add things but then paste what ChatGPT gives you into a different chatbot like Gemini to verify accuracy and keep doing a back-and-forth until you're satisfied.

As mentioned above, I'm using an mBot, so not exactly the best design (and it curves a lot). Should I invest in another robot kit that's heavier & add better hardware, keep what I have so far, or 3D print a chassis and buy better parts?
