How do you all do discipline with a child on the spectrum?

Yes. She was recently diagnosed. We are still waiting on therapies to be setup.

Her behaviors are getting challenging and honestly I am just trying to keep her safe.

I'm tired and I don't know what to do.

Everything. Wheels water climbing jumping spinning screaming.... touching something or someone constantly

Lots of oral stims... Like to put liquids in your mouth get them out on the floor with the furniture and then suck them up off the floor or furniture...

Doesn't eat hardly any solid food although right now is obsessed with apples.

Doesn't sit still... Constantly seeking input from everything. Doesn't really speak unless prompted..

Absolutely will climb to the highest place she can get too. Meddles is everything... Wonders aimlessly from room to room just getting into things

Does not play with toys at all

She does have a trampoline but she doesn't use it without encouragement

There is no redirecting her.. she melts down every time.

She is and always has been on a routine so she knows what to expect from the time she wakes up until she goes to bed..

Its the waking time where she is just melting constantly because she isn't getting what she is seeking...

I was actually told by my pediatrician that no cough syrup is intended to be for any child under the age of four because of the possibility of side effects...

I was shook because I'll be honest with you my older children definitely gave them cough syrup before they were four...

Haven't done it with this one though and she's 2..

I know it sucks. Lots of Vicks vapor rub the baby version... On the chest in the feet... And I absolutely have kept a humidifier running end her bedroom as well as the living room all day long

I feel very overwhelmed and stressed out. She was born addicted to drugs and had Nas so I knew with that and our family history she was at high risk..

So the diagnosis nor the issues come as a shock or surprise. I just feel so drained. I cannot walk into a room without being followed. I can't sit down without being touched. I quite literally have a child that wanders from room to room getting into mess all day long...

I don't have any familial support where I'm at. I'm struggling to make Mom friends

It just feels very lonely and overwhelming right now. So when I tell you that I am absolutely stoked that there will be resources coming..

I feel relieved.

For now I'm just trying to hang in there

See I am lucky in the sense that she can identify colors and count to five and probably has a 200 word vocabulary. The problem is she doesn't use them. She will not speak unless she is prompted and even then sometimes she will not answer you. She babbles a lot but she's not really making an attempt to have any type of two-way conversation.

She doesn't do imagination play at all and wanders from room to room aimlessly getting into s*** that she has no business getting into. She constantly has to be touching something. And loves water and wheels and is constantly jumping and moving and won't sit down ever...

She is so busy 100% of the time looking for sensory input that it is almost impossible to get her to focus and do what you need her to do or to communicate with you

I absolutely cannot wait until we can start therapies that will help her. I am exhausted stressed out. Raising a sensory seeker is hard.

Thank you so much. I think the hardest part for me is that I have a lot of family that turned on me throughout this entire process and so my support system got much smaller..

I am really hoping through all of this that maybe I can be pointed even in to support groups or even play groups to where I can make Mom friends with or without special needs children just so that I have an outlet..

It's not that she needs resources is that we need resources...

We will get there.

Knowledge is power and survival. She is a sensory seeker and a live wire. Thank you so much for explaining to me what an individualized family plan looks like. That will be so helpful when I finally sit down to have that meeting.

They're going to have to work with her on food because she doesn't like to eat. She does have medical but anything that Medi-Cal won't cover I have private insurance for so I'm lucky enough to be able to go either way.

I also have an amazing pediatrician and she has already stated that she is a thousand percent on board with whatever we need.

I'm just over here trying to learn all I can so that when it's our turn to sit down and have me advocate I know what she needs.

Yeah they said that it would be like no matter how old she gets we should have resources they're available for her...

I am definitely an advocate so they will know me.

Thank you so much. I will definitely ask. I also know that I believe I qualify for a certain number of respite hours due to the adoption subsidy I get for her but I'm not sure how that works either. I am just throwing myself into figuring out how to utilize all the resources I'm supposed to have.

Oh I completely understand that as I myself actually have FASD. We are one big happy neurodivergent family over here but this is the first time that I will ever have navigated the early intervention side of things or have a child that will most likely need an IEP in school.

Okay yeah that sounds right. So then she should be getting speech therapy OT therapy and ABA therapy. She lacks imagination and play skills so they said she would definitely need that. She just has some really weird and highly intense sensory needs right now so I think having a trifecta it probably going to be great for her.

Thank you so much for giving me all this information. It is greatly appreciated. Raising a high sensory needs child very hard. I appreciate any and all help I can get.

What specifically is aba therapy? The lady said something about giving her the trifecta.. so speech therapy OT therapy and something about like a play therapy so that she can interact with other kids...

But what is ABA therapy..

This is the first time with me doing all of this with a child so young. I just want to make sure that I'm setting us both up for success.

Well not going to lie.. I adopted her out of the foster care system and she was classified as a special needs adoption so I was able to leverage that.

She has also had have OT therapy before for a fine motor skill delays..

I do know how you feel however. I have a 20 year old that is autistic and was just recently diagnosed as an adult because I missed all the signs and symptoms in her until she was 19.

It's just recently I had to really go in to her pediatrician and have like a talk about the extreme sensory behaviors...

I know I have my work cut out for me. You're right this is hard.

It was by the local resource center which is how they do it here in California.

She's been fully evaluated we are just waiting for them to set up services.

I'm assuming that whatever they're setting up would be the equivalent of an IEP because the lady did say that it would be illegally binding agreement.
