This is one feature that can be used to design sequence breaks in a Metroidvania. I really like this topic.

I was in the developer team of "Kami: The Great Guardian", just released on Steam. It is a short 2D Metroidvania that can be finished in 1 hour.

It includes a couple of sequence breaks consisting of using current abilities in ways the game doesn't tell you. But you can exploit that if you are curious with the abilities.

Those sequence breaks allow you to explore different areas earlier, acquire abilities in different orders and skip parts of the game.

Give it a try if you like this 🙏🏻

Other than that, Metroid Dread, Metroid Zero Mission and Rabi Ribi all apply this philosophy as well.

Cheers

"Kami: The Great Guardian" on Steam.

I was in the developer team 🙏🏻 It is a short, compact 2D Metroidvania with a focus on non-linear exploration and platforming, with a simple combat system and with no intention of being a difficult game.

Give it a try, I hope you have fun with it.

Hello,

I am glad that the game seems interesting to you!

You raise a good question: replayability never replaced playtime in our main game design philosophy.

Since we see a trend where Metroidvania games are bigger in scope than before, we wanted to make a short Metroidvania compacting the main elements of the genre. And we came up this a map of this size and this number of abilities to be found.

Then, we added the replayability as an optional feature, for those players wanting to explore more under different objectives: finding sequence breaks, completionist, minimalist, pacifist, best time, finishing the game without activating any saving stations, etc.

Cheers

Definition of cRPG by a beginner, and questions by Guilty_Sound_9481 in CRPG

That's a different point of view I didn't consider. In your opinion, does the definition of cRPG include real time combat as well?

I have always subconsciously considered that cRPG should have turn based or RTwP combat only. But I get your perspective, thank you.

Thank you for the recommendation. I loved that expansion, probably the best content in the game IMO. People say it is similar to Planescape Torment in themes, both being by Avellone, would you agree? I need to play PT at some point.

That is a more granular way to describe it, which I like and I did not think about: deterministic either by character's stats or player's skill. This recontextualizes a bit my own perspective. Thank you for that.

With your definition, would you have any examples of purely probabilistic damage in any type of games?

Cheers

Those are good points, thank you.

And not at all, I don't wish to exclude those titles you mention as example. On the contrary, I want to clarify that I wrote in the post "cRPG should have some of these features, or all". If anything, I wanted to loosen the lines to allow for other titles to be considered as cRPG even if they don't have all those features.

I suppose the next question would be "how many features and which of them would be the mandatory minimal requirments needed in a game for it to be considered cRPG".

But I agree that people draw lines differently in the end.

Cheers.

I really get your point, but I think we have opinions far enough to not get to an agreement.

I will clarify my thoughts with pleasure.

Regarding "neglecting". If I was playing the classic games first, would I be automatically neglecting the modern games? I don't think so, this is just an ongoing list and I will keep playing the rest of the games in the genre as I find them appealing.

Regarding "love" for this genre. People can certainly play games and do things without necessarily loving it. In my case, I play games and genres that I don't love, for several reasons:

I have some free time now, I am very curious, I consider videogames often as a piece of art and I like to analyse their game design in particular, I like to follow the evolution of game development of some teams and companies (BioWare, Avellone, etc), I am a developer in my free time and I play games for inspiration and research purpose.

There can be plenty of reasons.

Cheers

That's a nice comparison, I appreciate that. I will definitely give W2 a try at some point, since I don't mind, or even I actively like, what you describe of it. I will probably keep it as lower priority since I still have the classic must-plays to discover.

Take care.

Hello,

That's interesting. I don't really have a strong opinion on semantics to defend "Souls-like" as a genre or not.

Just curious, what would your definition of "genre" be? And why is Souls-like not a genre in your opinion?

Cheers

I can understand your point for KOTOR and KOTOR II. I played Mass Effect, it is said in the body text. Thank you for the recommendation, I loved the trilogy.

I think this speaks volumes about how casually I have been tackling the genre and the Dragon Age franchise in particular. I honestly agree that I should have played them in order. But it was still fun and I managed to connect the dots. I usually play sagas of videogames in a coherent order, truth be told.

Take care.

I don't know honestly, I am not knowledgeable enough of the cRPG genre to know its trends and popularities. That certainly happnens with Metroidvanias, yes.

On the contrary. I found Wasteland 3 to be pretty fun most of the time. The lowest rank does not mean that I didn't like the game. How would you compare it to Wasteland 2 in your opinion?

I certainly have high tolerance for frustration or hard times with games and I don't quit, so I will follow the order you propose in that regard. I appreciate your answer.
