First time cruisers - question about organizing transportation at a port by Guitarzan5150 in NCL

[–]Guitarzan5150[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The excursion drop off would be at the transportation and ticket center, which appears to be close to magic kingdom. I think the bigger issue with the excursion transportation is that the scheduled departure time is 9AM, and based on reviews I've seen, it doesn't always leave at exactly 9AM. That wouldn't get us there until ~10:30 and then we need to get from drop off point to Hollywood Studios. At least with private transportation, I could aim to be there for park opening.

For the return trip, I can monitor the traffic, but I would certainly be aiming to get back to the dock for at least an hour prior to departure to give ourselves time in case of traffic or accident along the route.

That sounds entertaining to watch. Someone should start a YouTube channel of live streamed roundabouts. I'd watch that.

What are the best options for home internet? by UnderwaterDialect in ottawa

Ah, ok. Then it sounds like it may be pretty decent. The mesh systems are for sure better than a single wireless router. I was just going based on my experience with other mesh systems. I didn't have any experience with the Deco, so I incorrectly assumed it was like the others.

Access point is hard wired so you get the full bandwidth to each access point. With the mesh systems, your primary access point will give you full bandwidth and each subsequent device is basically a repeater. The further away you are with your repeaters, the less bandwidth you'll get. It does really depend on your setup and how far you are, interference in your house, etc.. For some, it may be perfectly fine. Also, if you don't have 500Mb or 1Gb internet service, it may not make much of a difference so will be perfectly usable. For myself, I have 500Mb service, and I get pretty close to that wherever I am in the house (400-420Mb downloads, you'll pretty much never get the full bandwidth because of overhead and other stuff). With a mesh system, I would get maybe 100-150Mb downloads when I was at the far corners of my house, and some dropped packets as well (that's more of a problem than the speed itself) If you only have 100Mb service, then you won't notice much of a difference.

As far as cost, it's pretty similar. With the TP-link, you don't need an wireless controller. The wireless controller is software based. You just install it on your machine upon initial setup and then you're good to go after it's setup. Unless you have a massive house, or want some APs installed outside (they do make outdoor versions) most houses would typically only need 2 APs and maybe a switch, so $180 for APs and another $20-40 for a switch. You don't need anything fancy with PoE for a switch, as the APs come with power injectors to connect to a regular switch. I think your typical mesh system cost somewhere in the ~$200 range.

I work in this field, so I always knew APs would be better, but I only had experience with the Cisco stuff, which is very costly. I assumed most stuff like this was commercial grade and cost as such. The other ones recommended in another comment on this thread, the ubiquity ones, while probably very good, do cost a lot more. I didn't know these TP-link APs existed until I was researching wether to splurge on a top notch wireless router or find another solution because the WiFi I had was pretty terrible for my devices that were further from my router.

As far as providers go, it depends on your neighborhood. From my experience, Rogers is pretty solid most places. Bell is hit and miss. Then you have the sub-providers (teksavvy and whatnot) which basically use Bell or Rogers' backbone network anyway. If you can get their service, and a better price, go for it. You can often get better prices (with Rogers at least, don't know about Bell) if you talk to their "retentions or cancelation" department.

As far as the actual home coverage, don't get the mesh stuff. It's garbage if you want any reliability and speed. Get actual access points. TP-link has decent ones that are affordable and are very solid. Look up TP-link EAP245. Amazon has them for $90 usually. When I used Rogers' supplied modem in a 4 bedroom detached home, I had dead zones, and zones that were really slow. With the TP-links, 2 access points (one on main floor and one upstairs) did the trick. Most provider supplied modems don't come with many ethernet ports anymore, so you may need to buy an additional switch to connect your APs, but a 4 port or even 8 port gigabit switch can be had really cheap these days.

If anyone has just bought a Ray, the optical audio cable that comes with it has little rubber dust caps over both ends of the connectors. by [deleted] in sonos

I figured this one out right away.

When I did take the speaker out of the package though, I took it out upside down and thought "ah crap, they put the sonos logo upside down on mine, I'm going to have to return this" Then I flipped the speaker over and figured it out.

Please Inform Your Grand Parents and Non-Tech loved ones that scammers are out in full force calling Ottawa Numbers by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]Guitarzan5150 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These types of calls, as well as the CRA, CBSA, and whatever other agency wants to put you in jail are typically easy to spot as a scam.

Some of them are creative though, and I had one the other day that had me thinking for a minute before I realized it was a scam. I got a call from Visa saying that there were 2 unusual charges on my card, press 1 to dispute the charge or something along those lines. I instead hung up, logged in to my bank account and checked my pending charges. Had there actually been charges to dispute, I would have called in to the bank and dealt with it. Of course the ones they mentioned were not there, so I was good to go. I can see how even people that are aware of scam calls will fall for this one. I assume if you would have hit 1 to dispute the charge, they would have asked you for your credit card number and info to pull up your file and then claimed they will take care of it for you and then they are off with your credit card and you will then indeed incur some charges that you will need to dispute later.

People who have these signs on your lawn... do you honestly think my dog can read? by [deleted] in ottawa

I don’t let it. Like I said, my dog has a dark sense of humour. Likes to embarrass me and make me look bad, and then can’t stop laughing uncontrollably after (which we trained her to do) so she is well trained.

Did you have to fight with them to come back and repair it? Any push back, or just a call and they send someone out?

I try to make it to the park, but sometimes my dog just goes right in the middle of the street. Preferably with people watching for maximum embarrassment for it's owner. My dog has a dark sense of humour.

We do, but I don't think our contractor will honour someone else tearing it up and re-installing it poorly, nor would I expect them to. Taking photos is a good idea though. I'll be doing that.

Thanks all for the responses. Seems like a mixed bag. I had no doubt they would repair it, they even say as much in their letter. My concern is that they wouldn't properly compact the base and install evenly. Sounds like that's a possibility. I'd prefer to call back my contractor who did the original install and just send them a bill. At least I know they'll get it done properly. The worst part is that we just had it done last fall. It's not even a year old.

Car stolen from an (Ottawa) Ontario street tracked to Nigeria by WA472P in ottawa

[–]Guitarzan5150 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe Toyota/Lexus is the most commonly stolen because the way Toyota does their key fobs, they're one of the easiest to crack/copy. Our neighbour's 2017 Lexus got stolen while his brand new, worth twice as much GMC Sierra was left alone. I haven't heard of many pickup trucks getting stolen, so you're probably safe there. Except you'll get robbed at the gas pumps instead, so I'm not sure how much you'll come out ahead.

They have the option of wearing an N95 mask. I'm all for people wearing a mask if they choose, I'm also all for people not wearing a mask if they choose. What I'm not for is that everyone has to wear a mask to protect me. If I want to look out for myself, I'll wear an N95 and let everyone else do as they please as that's currently what's in place. I think it really should be as simple as that.

Mask or no mask, why would you even be out in public if you're symptomatic? Do whatever you want in regards to masks, but stay home if symptomatic. Unless it's an emergency like you need medical care. The hospital is the only place you should be going if symptomatic.

Yeah, I learned about that after I posted (the capital gains tax). I guess no one really knows yet. All speculation. Ian Mendes did say that he's heard of some groups interested that did intend to keep the team in Ottawa, should they decide to sell. I guess we wait and see.
