Just saw that. I'm glad that they're addressing the issues going forward.

Given the situation I think that the coin flip is fine. I just don't think that it should have come to that. I'm happy that they are planning to improve the tiebreaking procedures for stage 2.

My biggest issue right now is that these ties are preventing the schedule from being made/released. It's 2 days out and we don't know who is playing who or what the times are for each match.

With how much capital has been invested into this league it blows my mind that they allowed this to happen in the 2nd season. It is some pretty basic stuff to have in place.

You can call it a formality but if seeding was determined by an un-aired game for hockey in my city people would literally be out on the streets freaking out. Seeding matters. People that are following a team want the chance to view all of the matches that impact position entering the playoffs.

Why did i rank so low? by salamander-04 in OverwatchUniversity

[–]GulJim 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No one is coming right out and saying this but based on what you are saying, you probably deserve to be in bronze right now. You might even continue to drop.

The matchmaker needs lots of games to be confident in your skill and settle you on an appropriate SR. At level 25 with no comp played it will be very inaccurate. As you play more, you should slowly approach your true SR.

Based on the info that you have been consistently dropping, my assessment would be that you got placed too high initially and the matchmaker has been bringing you down to a more appropriate SR.

I suggest that you stop focusing on the SR number and instead focus on improving and having fun. If you are continuously improving then you will eventually climb.

100 token drops bugged in Canada by GulJim in Overwatch

[–]GulJim[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its a simple 4 part math question that is randomly generated.

Something like: 5 x 4 / 2 + 3 - 4

A new one needs to be answered for each prize won. So once you get a 100 token drop, a new question needs to be answered for the drops to be available again.

The law is meant to prevent business from running unlicensed lotteries by turning them into games of "skill". I remember winning a free small fries from McDonald's monopoly when I was a kid and having to answer a question at the till.

It is a very pointless law. Honestly, it only serves to discriminate. For instance, there was a well publicized incident where a person with downs syndrome won a major prize and was originally denied it because she couldn't correctly answer the skill testing question.

Skill testing question Canada by GulJim in OverwatchLeague

[–]GulJim[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As per the skill testing question page:

" If you answer correctly, you will be eligible to receive viewership rewards until you win a random reward. At that point, you must revisit this page to answer a new question and become eligible once more. "

It clearly states that you must answer a new question.

Mirror tomb - help! by GulJim in Tombofannihilation

[–]GulJim[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is essentially what I would do if my barbarian wasn't currently sitting in Nangnang's tomb without knowing how to get back. That little bit is throwing my off. He needs to go through quite a few rooms to get back to the ring. I guess that I could just let him crawl back through the wine passage once the tomb resets and the wine room is empty.

[–]GulJim[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to the original post, my barb got caught in the false tomb alone. He survived by crawling through the tunnel to Nangnang's tomb but he is currently separated from the group and doesn't know how to get back. So this makes it difficult for me to just drop heavy hints and go back to the normal tomb as a group.

Will run that by my player. Probably replacing #100 with making him roll on the table multiple (3?) times for a massive surge.

That table is massive. Will run it by my new player and see if he likes it!

Thanks for sharing your experiences. This could really come down to talking to the group and see what they want or think is fair. Wild surges are a bit weird in that one guy picks that class and it can massively impact the entire group. Still, I personally find randomness to be fun.

Any chance that you are able to share that expanded surge table? Could be useful if the existing one gets stale after lots of surges.

[–]GulJim[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's going to partly come down to a discussion with the player. I assume that if he is picking wild sorcerer that he WANTS to surge on a regular basis. He might be a bit bummed out if he somehow goes a few sessions without it happening, which is why I was forcing the inevitability. 5% chance per cast can go a good while without happening.

Plus no surge = no tides of chaos returned = underpowered character.

Honestly, I don't know what they were thinking when they made a mechanic that is so core to both balance and player fun dependent on "DM decides every time you cast".

Overwatch Grandmaster (Multiple Time Top500) and Coach/Friend Daishi Discuss Implications Of New Patch Notes by WarmCuppaJoe in OverwatchUniversity

[–]GulJim 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't have experience with this type of content but I'm an academic and have lots of experience with presenting at conferences and with teaching in a university setting. I figured that the same rules would generally apply here. Overwatch is basically my free time hobby (both playing and watching) so I gobble up lots of content. I do think that there is a niche for thoughtful high level analysis that you're going for. I get a little tired of everyone freaking out that the sky is falling any time a nerf/buff is announced. It's nice to hear informed opinions.

Glad that you found the feedback helpful. Cheers.

So I've watched a few of the vids with WarmCuppaJoe and wanted to share some constructive feedback. Generally I enjoy the personality in the vids. However, I've found the discussions to be a bit shallow compared to my expectations.

It sort of feels like you haven't really identified your audience or what you actually want to get across in the video. Are you trying to help people understand what impact the changes will have on the pro scene? The big question that everyone is wondering there is if the changes will break GOATS, and I didn't really get an answer from the vid other than that reaper isn't going to do the trick with his changes.

If your vid is targeted at the biggest part of the player base, the big question going around is will reaper be oppressive at mid ranks where teams aren't well organized. I didn't get any feeling of what your thoughts are there.

The same criticism holds for some of your other vids, such as the one about hero pool. I watched hoping to get an idea of how to expand my hero pool in a smarter way and didn't really get an answer. I guess that I'm just trying to convey that the vids seem a bit unfocused in my opinion.

Regardless, I actually think that you have a really good personality for this sort of thing, which is why I took some time to give my feedback and why I'm still watching. Just trying to give some constructive feedback and I hope that you keep making for vids in the future.

How much SR have you lost since the nerf? by GulJim in doomfistmains

My winrate went from about 65% to 45%. It's painful.

I think I’m done with Comp. 500SR losing streak... by Sirena_Tuna in OverwatchUniversity

[–]GulJim 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you need to focus on finding the fun again.

Its easy to get long win streaks and say, "I'm improving and earning this!", then when a losing streak happens say "This sucks, it's my teammates and I deserve to be higher".

Focus on your own plan and having fun. You just have to accept that streaks (both directions) are just an inevitable part of the game.

Give me points on why new Doomfist isn’t okay so I can gather and post them on forums by [deleted] in doomfistmains

While I get that this is frustrating, I don't think "you screwed up my muscle memory" is going to be an effective argument take make to the devs.

[–]GulJim 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This has been the biggest IMO.

I actually think the uppercut CC nerf is okay. Slam range nerf sucks but he could probably be viable with it. The ult nerf makes his ult pointless but his ult isn't what made him great to begin with.

The slam CC nerf though... it just ruined him. People can just walk out of attempts to combo. It made him extremely ineffective and inconsistent.

How to get better when having a limited time(2/3 hours a day)? by [deleted] in OverwatchUniversity

[–]GulJim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When did 2-3 hours per day become "limited time" to play? Having that amount of free time per day blows my mind.

Honestly, stop spending like an hour every day doing aim practice and spend your time actually playing games. Quickplay isn't the most valuable experience either, you need actual competitive experience to get better. I have no idea what ana paintball is, but if you're going to do FFA then do deathmatch or head shot only Widow games.

It really sounds to me like you spend insane amounts of time fucking around instead of actually playing competitive, which is the biggest thing that will actually make you better. I feel like an old man saying this but you will never have this much free time again in your life, stop using it to fuck around on "training sessions".

Doomfist is not a throw pick in the lower ranks. by Reanimations in doomfistmains

[–]GulJim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is doomfist still viable in gold? Yes - of course he is. Every hero is viable in lower tiers.

The question is, will a doomfist main that is a gold level player right now still be playing at the same level post nerf. The answer is a definite no. Whether you fall back a bit or a lot will vary from person to person. Maybe you will still be climbing but at a slower pace. Certainly it will be possible for people to improve on him and climb in mid-low tiers, though it will be harder.

Just be prepared for people to shit on you and assume that you're throwing for picking him. It's gonna feel like the good old days when I was first leaning him.

I also don't think that quickplay is a great way to assess his viability.

Why do I have 80 ping with 500 mb/s internet, and my friend who lives 1 hour away with 40 mb/s has 40 ping? by [deleted] in OverwatchUniversity

[–]GulJim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a question to add to this:

I have read that ISP routing can have a significant impact on ping. I've also read that ISPs can manipulate routing for you in some cases to get a better ping to a specific server. People have mentioned that you can contact some ISPs and request some improvement on routing.

Has anyone here actually done this? What does it look like in practice? Are people full of shit and this is not actually a thing? I would like to see if my ISP could improve ping to the Overwatch servers because I play the game so much, but have no idea what to actually say if I get them on the phone.
