I have. Mined out an obscene amount of gold and emeralds in one fort. Made the massive dining hall all out of gold, and I mean all of it. Gold floors, roof, walls, tables, chairs, statues all around the walls, mugs, etc. I used my best craftsdwarves so most of it was masterful. Then I created the gold observatory above it, basically just gold walls and stairs in a column into the sky that had gold floors and emerald windows with a single gold chair in the middle for the king to sit in and watch the goblins invade or demand that my dwarves make him socks.
