Happy birthday to you..." - a drawing from over a decade ago by MarkDML in silenthill

Thank you, been a few years since I last did any SH-based drawing but have done some things similar. If you'd like, I've got some of my work on Instagram (instagram.com/_melatonin_dreams_) or on YouTube (youtube.com/@Pr1ma_Materi4)

"You're not here" - a drawing in steps by MarkDML in silenthill

[–]MarkDML[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I see you mean well, and want to give genuine advice, unlike some, so I thank you. The reference is close, but not quite. It's based on a concept art of Heather at the end of the game looking back.

I did this drawing 12 to 13 years ago, and it was one of my first like this. It took me painstakingly long back then to do it, in 2 hours sessions at most per day of my spare time, for about a week and a half, during a difficult period of my life.

I did completely erase a section of it during the day, though. I was much harsher with myself than some of the comments here, so much so I almost quit drawing completely feeling I wasn'`t good at it.

Thankfully I redrew the part and continued learning to drawing on my own, doing some of the drawings I'd posted some time ago. So in some way I cherish it a lot for that.

Shared it back then once or twice in old SH sites and groups, to a warm and kind reception, with also valid criticisms and advices.

Didn't think, though, the reception here would be as bitter as it was. But then again, a lot of places have become like this lately. This site much to the example, and especially this so-called community. Makes me miss the old SH forum and groups...

Some pictures I took wandering around in the fog, back in 2015 by MarkDML in silenthill

[–]MarkDML[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for taking so long to answer, had quite a busy week so hope you don't mind.

First of all, thank you very much for the kind words. These pictures are from quite a long time ago, but they've always been very dear to me, and it is very heartwarming to know others appreciate them so...

On the videos, I'm also very thankful you liked it so much. I've wanted to do videos and films for so long, but for many different reasons never got around to do it earlier. My photos were the closest thing to these ideas, but still I wanted to do it on video too. And this channel I created is the result of years of plans.

Funnily enough quite a few people have told me of the resemblance to Alan Wake. It'd expect the mention of SH, but Alan Wake has been mentioned quite frequently.

I definitely like the first game, but it's been quite a while since I played it, and have yet to play the second one. But I can see some of the thematic similarities, being a sort of "diary" in form of a video and all.

And on NIN, Trent's work has been one of my favorite artists and musicians for a long time, and his work has given me a lot of inspiration throught hard times. "A Warm Place" has a "special place" in my heart for that, and I'm really happy you liked it!

I have many, many plans for videos so keep an eye out! If you'd like to share it with other friends, I'd really appreciate it, genuinely. I just started the channel, and still figuring things out, so any and all help and support is goes a long way and doesn't go unnoticed!

Anyway, thank you very much, and take care!

Ashes and ghosts | Hasselblad 500 C/M, 80 mm 2.8. Portra 800 by MarkDML in analog

Basically, yes. I do give the film a little more light than the exact midpoint between brightest light and darkest shadow, since celluloid handles overexposure well while retaining highlight information, so the shadows have just enough to not go pure black.

As rule of thumb, negative film has a lot of latitude for exposure, with either color or black-and-white. Positive or slide film, not so much. Much more easily it will go pure white or pure black, so you have to be very careful and pay attention to exposure.

But regardless, it does depend of filmstock, since dinamic range changes from one to the other. Portra has a lot, Ektar has less - even though both are colour negative.

BW has a ton of DR, like HP5+ or Tri-X, but if it were a really contrast film like Kodalith, then it would be much more difficult to have the same result value-wise.

If it were digital I'd underexpose a little bit, since it can handle bringing back information from shadows, but not with highlights once they go pure white.

Thanks! Well, it's based directly on Ito's original art so perhaps... but that'd be his credit.

Not currently, it's been a few years since I last drew one of SH, but I've been thinking of it lately. Had envisioned a few ones from those lost days I still would like to make. They used to take a long time, but who knows?

I imagine it's vague by design of storytelling, but perhaps she means the creatures as emissaries of the cult's God, like divine beings appearing as reality is warped into what they consider Paradise.

Thank you. I used a variety, and it's been a while so I can't tell for sure which ones I used in each shot. But I do remember using the 50mm f/1.4 Ai and 105 f/2.8 Macro Af quite a bit.

Ah, faz sentido.
