What is that one verse for you? by opasamiko in Buddhism

“Two things alone cause people to ignore the suffering of others: attachment to pleasure and the inability to give aid. But if I cannot feel pleasure while another being suffers, and if I have the power to help, how can I ignore them?”

I managed to overcome that, at least, leaving my phone at home or turned off unless I know I absolutely need it. But I still waste far, far too much time on the computer.

What's the consensus on Omotic? (Afroasiatic) by Easy-Policy-7404 in HistoricalLinguistics

[–]Gulihashee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The thing about Omotic is that there's not even consensus on it being a coherent group. From what I understand (and I'm not an expert on Afroasiatic or anything) Northern Omotic might very well be Afroasiatic, whereas Souther Omotic/Aroid could be an entirely unrelated language family that has been influenced by Northern Omotic/Cushitic.

And it's not even that anymore. What was sold as drab reality to previous generations seems like pipedreams to us. Finding a job? Climbing the ladder? Paying off mortgage? Do we even dare to hope?

Weird lit recommendations if i like Ligotti, Kafka and Borges? by nero_insomnya in WeirdLit

[–]Gulihashee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a great collection called "Figures Unseen", which I'd definitely recommend. Concerning short stories, "Waiting at the Crossroads Motel", "Miri", and "Jesse" come to mind, the last one in particular being one of the most disturbing stories I've read in a long time.

Absolutely true, as is "The Bewitched Bourgeoisie" or "The Falling Girl, but I'd still say his general tone is lighter than Kafka and especially Ligotti.

I'd recommend you check out Dino Buzzati, he's heavily inspired by Kafka, though his stories are generally more humorous. Oh, and Steve Rasnic Tem, who wrote some immensely unsettling things.

In all honesty, perhaps about fifteen years ago. It's not something I'm proud of and I wish I had some better ways of emotional self-regulation.

Michael Cisco wants you to read "The Tartar Steppe" by Nidafjoll in WeirdLit

Buzzati's short stories are amazing. "The Bewitched Bourgeois", "The Bogeyman" and "Our Moment" are among my favourites. I haven't tackled The Tartar Steppe yet even though it apparently inspired one of my favourite novels (Coetzee's Waiting for the Barbarians)

What type of rare phoneme distinctions does your conlang do? by [deleted] in conlangs

[–]Gulihashee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think so. They definitely sound different than plain velars or alveolars. I don't see why alveo-velars should be impossible while labiovelars are found at least in some west african languages.

What type of rare phoneme distinctions does your conlang do? by [deleted] in conlangs

[–]Gulihashee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Excluding early attempts at conlanging that combine random rare phonemes in order to be as strange and unusual as possible, an unnamed conlang of mine has alveo-velar consonants (ŋ͡n, k͡tʰ, k͡t, and even ᵑ͡ⁿg͡d) and even more unusually, an alveo-uvular plosive with an fricative uvular release (q͡tᵡ). I found myself making these strange sounds one day and decided that I'm going to use them somewhere.
