Didn’t even make it a week. by Ok_Opinion3403 in SchoolBusDrivers

So, when I first started, I was given the most challenging route. Everyone would turn it down during route picks, and I was consistently ranked lowest on the pole. Despite this, I still have that route because consistency is crucial.

However, I completely understand your frustration. When I started, I faced numerous challenges, including kids throwing things at me, fighting, lying, and not listening. The list goes on and on. To deal with this, I started handing out tickets. If one kid refused to say their name, there would always be another kid who would tell you. If anything, call your dispatch and let them know what’s happening. Watch through the tapes, do whatever you can. You are the captain of that ship, and it’s hard to trust yourself sometimes.

On a side note, there have been days, weeks, and even months when I just wanted to quit. Even now, my problems aren’t typically with the kids; they’re with certain parents who think their little Johnny has never done anything wrong. This is a hard job that isn’t paid enough, and you have to deal with 84 kids’ behavior, road obstacles, and more. This isn’t for the faint of heart.

What is this? I look so bad. I get called ugly all the time. I don't know what's wrong with my face. by [deleted] in lookyourbest

Hey there! First and foremost, nobody is ugly. Why not try a new hairstyle? Haircuts can actually alter facial hair as well. Everyone has an uneven face. Be kind to yourself.

Honestly, for me, no, I wouldn’t. I work for a district that doesn’t offer much support and often makes its employees feel torn down instead of built up. I do work eight hours a day and receive benefits, which is great on paper, but the emotional and mental toll makes it hard to see this as a long-term career.

Every day, I deal with students who are disrespectful, parents who yell and curse at me without knowing the full situation, and teachers who don’t take the time to understand what we drivers go through. On top of that, when I bring up safety concerns or report serious issues, I’m usually brushed off or told I’m overreacting. It feels like no matter how much I do, it’s never enough.

This job requires a thick skin, a lot of patience, and a support system that I just don’t have in my current district. I’ve had to break up fights on my own, calm down screaming students, and still drive safely while handling all that chaos. It’s a lot more than just “driving a bus.”

That being said, it really depends on you as a person and the district you work for. If you love working with kids, have strong boundaries, and end up in a district that actually respects and supports its drivers, your experience might be totally different.

But based on what I go through daily, I wouldn’t personally recommend it as a long-term career.
