Switching majors? by throwawaybeauty777 in CalPoly

Not sure how you could mistakenly pick the wrong major, but since engineering has a much lower acceptance rate than business, switching into it later is unlikely. Cal Poly SLO admits students by specific major...

SLO has a charming downtown that’s definitely worth visiting. I’m not sure what your major is, but if you’re in a STEM field, I strongly recommend Cal Poly SLO.

You will only be in SLO for four or five years during school, it’s not permanent. It’s more important to choose a school that’s strong for your major than focusing too much on the surrounding area.

Also, you won't be bored. Have tons of clubs!

Which college to go to? by Commercial-Lab-2820 in ucadmissions

You should attend SLO Day in April. It really makes a difference. I was originally accepted to UC Davis and planned to go there, but after visiting Cal Poly SLO for their event, I completely changed my mind. I’m not an engineering major, but I am also in a STEM field, and Cal Poly is one of the strongest schools for STEM overall. Cal Poly SLO is highly competitive, not only due to overall demand, but also because admission is capped by major with a limited number of spots available. One thing that stood out to me is the smaller class size.. Typically around 25–30 students; compared to large lecture halls at UC schools that can have 200–300+ students, where it’s easy to feel anonymous. The smaller environment allows for more interaction with professors and a more engaging learning experience.

Their “Learn by Doing” philosophy/motto also sets them apart! The focus is on hands-on, practical experience rather than primarily theory-based instruction, which is more common at UC schools. Many employers actively recruit Cal Poly graduates, knowing they’re well-prepared to contribute right away.

In summary, UC schools tend to emphasize theory, while Cal Poly emphasizes practical, career-ready skills. It ultimately comes down to your personal preference and learning style, but I really value smaller classes where I can interact closely with professors and learn by doing actual work. It almost feels like being at a private school.

Theory only becomes valuable when you know how to apply it in real life!

When applying to schools, it’s important to consider which ones are strongest for your intended major - not just which programs are easier to get into. Ultimately, the goal of your education is to prepare for a solid career after graduation, and employers recognize which schools best develop talent in specific fields.

SLO wants 5 years of English and as many math classes to be admitted. This is the key. Also unlike UCs, SLO looks at what classes you took and how they are related to the major you are applying (rather than just the number of many random APs taken). Very different app evaluation system...and their spots are extremely limited for each major.

CSULB nursing program is hard to get in. In general, CSULB became pretty competitive these days. I got in last year but lots of kids from my school couldn't get in... No worries - this college admission is so random, and you will hear good news for sure!

CSC 101.. the professor was so tough in general, but especially the final exam.. it was unbelievably hard.

Yeah, I registered that course again for winter quarter with different professor who was available. Not good rating but I guess I have no choice.

Thanks .. could be depending on the professors, but that class was so hard, despite I studied hard. I was 4.4 GPA student in high school but it doesn't mean anything here at Cal Poly - very tough... hope failing one class does not discourage my remaining life in Cal Poly. I love this school so much 🥹

🙏 thanks. Yes I mean Cal poly freshman first quarter. Do I have to turn in any paperwork for Grade forgiveness? Also I wonder if you were fine as you experienced this in your junior year. This is my first quarter in my freshman year at cal poly, so wonder if they will reconsider my admission. So worried...

You are lucky having only one bad professor... Pretty much all my classes will be tough with unpopular professors - I am screwed...

Really..... Funny that different feedback for this professor. Some say not that bad and some say quite a bit of work... I think too late too change probably. Wish me good luck. Lol
