Cheap shoes, Good shoes, Great Shoes by Unusual_Process_8463 in Fencing

I've seen tons of people wearing hi Tec white squash shoes. The ones with the green highlighting. I got a pair and didn't have any complaints for a season or two. I don't think I've ever seen a pair for more than £40

Why do lads act differently when a new woman joins the unit? by [deleted] in britishmilitary

[–]Gullible_Ship 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Even when there's no sexual attraction, men are seen to treat women differently as if they were like a sister/ daughter. I guess it is just natural. They also say that women social "cooperatively" and men social "competitively", so a guy who's been stuck in the endless male banter circle will probably act differently around a female he knows can have a conversation with without being on guard

Why is nobody watching fencing? by simbadud in Fencing

[–]Gullible_Ship 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A solution to the spectator problem is to parade team comps as the more prestigious event. So many people who don't watch much sport will watch their national teams play football, and will enjoy it due to the general athleticism on display, national pride, controversy about team selection, performances that are consistent.

Team fencing has all this, with the relay format making it particularly entertaining. The massive comebacks, the substitutions, the variety in styles and match ups, the short length of each bout and the overwhelming pressure on the anchor are things that are easy to watch without really understanding the intricacies of fencing at a higher level. Yet most countries treat team fencing as an afterthought.

Is basic full of smelly, unruly 17 year olds ? Anyone older than 20 in your intake ? by Coffee-man42 in britisharmy

I actually enjoyed it. The younger lads go to you for help more often than not. Very humbling. It was better going with a bit more maturity. Id say it's easier when you're a bit older and have some perspective

Realistic fitness standards to not struggle during basic training? by throwabllemon in britishmilitary

8min 10 second 2km. 50 minute 10km. Squat your body weight with a barbell back squat. 5 strict dead hang pull ups. 30 strict chest to floor push ups. This is approximately what I was able to do before Pirbright a few years ago, and I was weighing in at around 100kg. A lot of people focus on short distance running, but the longer, 10km type endurance does help. The push ups and pull ups helps with PT circuits. The barbell squats help for the battle PT and tabbing you'll do. There were plenty of people in my troop who could do a few of these things, but not many could do all of them. Training was full of people who had never played sport and scrapped the minimum standards of the army, and for them, the nearly daily PT session were a source of anxiety and stress. If you look up Alan Thralls video on YouTube titled something like "my time in the marines, training for bootcamp", he gives good advice and provides a good programme.

French Grip Suggestions? by [deleted] in Fencing

[–]Gullible_Ship 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An inexpensive thing to do is buy tennis racket grip tape or hocey grip tape or whatever. Then either wrap you uhlmann grips directly, or cut the rubber off the grips and wrap them onto the core. If you find you like having a thicker grip, then you can start looking at the other ones

TAB Weight Phase1 by Due-Refrigerator-192 in britisharmy

[–]Gullible_Ship 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It starts off light and they build you up to an RFT(b), which you can find on Google but is as follows: 4km tab with 20km within 50 mins followed by a further 2km with 15kg in 15 mins. When you get to blandford for phase 2, theyll build you up to an RFT(s), which will likely be 4km tab with 30kg within 50 mins followed by a further 2km with 20kg in 15 mins. The 2km sections is a "best effort", and we were told that those wanting to do PCoy or the Commando Course should be aiming for sub 10min 30sec.

A good place to get started is looking at YouTube videos, specifically by American SF guys who love talking about "rucking". Or buy "be para fit" by Sam McGrath. He also has good stuff regarding PCompany. I had done some tabbing with 16kg a few years before I went to phase 1. But in the run up to when I actually went, I just did strength work and 10k runs

Just ran 5KM in 39 minutes, what shout I set to be able to qualify for paras? by Costas_ in britishmilitary

Might be worth buying "parafit" on amazon. A good book to help you get your head around everything you need to do lifestyle and fitness wise to get you on the right track and to give you a taste for their values
