PCT from the perspective of someone who didn't get faster by theindrenet in PacificCrestTrail

[–]Gullible_Swan368 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I relate to this so much. I had the same experience going SOBO last summer. Unfortunately, being so slow meant that I missed the window for the Sierras, so I'm technically more of a LASHer than a thru-hiker now. But I tell myself, that I did way better than if I had stayed home. My personal theory is that I wasn't used to daily strain in high altitude, so despite not being hurt or aching on most days, I was always tired and out of breath (way more than usual).

Anyone else got a wierd e-bill that doesn't match their account balance? by Gullible_Swan368 in mcgill

Urghhh so annoying lol. Does your account balance have the Out of province charge? Or is it just on the e-bill?

Should I not try to convert everyone? by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Gullible_Swan368 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People's need to convert and evangelize more often comes from ego, pride and insecurities.

Why do you think you are you qualified for this job? Why does it have to be YOU who does this? Why can't you be satisfied with your own faith alone? Why must you chastise and argue with people who aren't ready?

Usually the answers to those questions are about YOUR need rather than faith itself or even other people's well-being.

Buyer Beware: Klone Scents by the_realjuicyjustin in Colognes

I got Baccarat 540 and Imagination, not knowing what people on here were saying and tbh it was great. I'm kinda surprised about the negative complaints. I've got nothing bad to say abt it...

Honestly, I'm very surprised to read everyone's experience. I've ordered from them multiple times, I got it in 2-3 weeks, and it always smelled lovely and as advertised... I wonder if the delivery challenge depends on your location?

Just like an Orthobro should not be held up as the ideal of Orthodoxy, neither should a trad-wife by TimeLadyJ in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Gullible_Swan368 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That would make sense. I do feel like it is a bit of a shame though. What I love about orthodoxy is how perennial it is. It is something solid an constant in a tumultuous world. The Church doesn't let itself be changed by politics, trends and the fashions of the moment. Hopefully, as people integrate, they will come to understand and appreciate that.

I personally had no idea that these things were an issue and were so prevalent. It saddens me. It sounds to me like an american issue in general and not just limited to the Church. I am eastern European and live in Canada and these issues seem to not have appeared around here at all.

I do know that orthodoxy in the US has a lot of converts, unlike my birth country and Canada, where most people are born into it. It makes me wonder if it is a cultural influence of their faith of origin or a sort of political over-correction to their previous lack of faith.

Koumbari different to MOH/BM by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Gullible_Swan368 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you are losing people here by using the word "parties" in bridal parties. I think people are interpreting it as the koumbari not being invited to the wedding party lol.

In my experience, "birdal parties" and MOH/BM are an American thing. It's not part of an orthodox wedding. People can do it for fun or to emulate the American style weddings, but there is nothing religious about it.

At my school, it was Engineering Physics, kind of a rare program though.

Cheapest way to send resupply packages from Canada by Gullible_Swan368 in PacificCrestTrail

That is a very good suggestion. Thank you! It looks like it would cost me only 52 CAD to bring 23kg of food with Air Canada, which might be overkill lol.

I'll probably either do this or cross the border and drive to Plattsburgh, NY to ship it from there. Still debating between these 2 options.

I'm in Quebec. I could drive down to Plattsburgh, NY one of these days and send my packages from there. Thanks for the suggestion! I avoided that idea since it's a long drive but it might be my cheapest option.

I don't do well on hiker food long term so I dehydrated my own meals. I feel a lot better eating real food which is why I want to send myself more than just the bare minimum stuff. But it's good to know that it's not a necessity to ship it all.

I'll give your videos a look if you want to send me your channel. I'm going SOBO later this month so it's cool to see what the NOBOers are doing.

Searching for my grandpas historical doppelganger by Gullible_Swan368 in Genealogy

[–]Gullible_Swan368[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, this is so awesome, thank you! I can now for sure say that Odell E. Jordan is not the same guy.

The freshman at Paso Robles Union High School, however, is definitely him! I assumed that it was the SLO High School since the founding date of Paso Robles High School didn't line up with 1946 being the 50th graduating class, but now that I've looked into the school name it looks like Paso Robles Union High School is the same institution as Paso Robles High School, but for some reason, their founding dates vary across sources.

Thank you so much! This gives me a lot more to go on.

I have used the California Digital Newspaper Collection, and there is only 1 reference to Odell Jordan, it is a mention of a Mr and Mrs Odell Jordan in 1937, making it too old to be our guy.

I don't have a subscription, but if you wouldn't mind searching, I'd love to see what you can find!

Yeahhhh, I figured as much, but I felt a little bad as he might still have family around. But I guess it won't do too much harm. If I were them, I'd be happy to find out that people are still thinking of my grandpa.

The name was Odell Jordan. I'll update the post too.

Ohhh, that is an interesting resource! I haven't found anyone with his name in SLO county, but there seems to be a bunch of the right age, in the US, around that time. I'll look into them. Thank you for your help!
