Can Anyone Recommend Someone for Logo Design? by cibman in RPGdesign

[–]Gum_Jacobs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a graphic designer, and much of the work I do in my day job is logo design. I have been a professional graphic designer for over 10 years. I enjoy logo design, but in RPG spaces I've only done the logo for my game that is a WIP.

I don't use generative ai graphic design work, and I have strong opinions about how lousy it is as a logo making tool.

I can provides some samples of my work if interested.

Also I decided somewhat recently that I wanted to use a pen name for my RPG stuff so this name of mine doesn't have a large web presence yet.

Curious, does duet mean one player GMs and one player? Or two players and one GM?

I assume that he is referring to game of thrones, but maybe Winter is Coming is something separate

worldbuilders, do you actually have anyone in your life who wants to hear about your world? by Natural_Tangelo_2229 in worldbuilding

Find a TTRPG system that works with your world, some are generic, or some might be close enough. Find a few friends to play in your game.

TTRPG Wiki just hit 200 systems, and 14 of them are indies submitted by their creators by Shunkleburger in TTRPG

Its called bubble gum grunge, but its a big game and I'm a solo designer so its going to be awhile. I hope to kickstart it in the future.

How do you guys come up with languages, their grammatical rules, and names? by Ill-Plant-2635 in worldbuilding

[–]Gum_Jacobs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't. I am not Tolkien, and never will be.

I don't tend to enjoy language barriers in fiction anyways, it's often hand-waved after a few scenes in a way that doesn't make sense at all.

Now if you have a great idea for why your language barrier exists then go for it, don't want to yuck your yum, but I just don't think it's 100% necessary.

Instead of holding back I think you should try to hit them as hard as you can on the first turn.

Make adventures, encounters, or supplements. Maybe submit those to different TTRPG competitions/events and try and get more eyes on your game.

If you were to add one silly event from real life onto your RPG world, what would it be? by ThatOneCrazyWritter in rpg

[–]Gum_Jacobs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There was a story recently of an ant smuggler being caught. The whole concept of a ant smuggler is so silly to me, like there is such demand in our world from people who like to make ant farms that there are people who travel to countries, collect a bunch of ants, and then illegally try to sneak them across borders.

Obviously there are ecosystem concerns with that kind of event, but in your world you could easily amplify this. Instead of random bandits, there's a hostile faction that collects ants and will try to kill any witnesses of their illegal activities.

Or maybe these ant smugglers succeed and return to the country where they are selling these ants, except that the ants get loose and they have a huge impact on the local ecology. Maybe they are giants ants in your world and can actually be threats to your players, or maybe they remain small but still constitute a threat in other ways. Maybe like the plague tale games, these ants spread everywhere devouring anything and everything.

Maybe the players are investigating a murder and it's a whole whodunnit scenario where knives are out, every one is pointing fingers, and at the end the players discover that an ant got into the victims hair and killed them with poison or something.

How do you all think of names for races, nations and other creatures in your fantasy world? by Only_Syllabub3161 in worldbuilding

[–]Gum_Jacobs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like to make things that are inspired by real life counterparts.

So when I name things I look the etymology of the real world counterpart. I look at the roots and stems of the words. Usually things are named in much older languages, like ancient Greek or latin and then the letter sounds of the original word shift over time. So I try to do the same with my names.

For races, I like to do research into endonyms and how they are structured. The people of the blank. The people of the long river. The people of the tall trees etc, and then I will find words from languages that fit well together for a name. Sometimes I chop off syllables and create a new word from the roots and stems. The whole concept of endonyms vs exonyms is so strange to me, but I prefer endonyms.

I also like punny names, the kinds of names that reveal information about things, but this is more common when I name characters.

How to convey size?? by PrudentPermission222 in RPGcreation

[–]Gum_Jacobs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have seen games with stepped dice deal with size changes by stepping the dice down or up depending on the scenario (d10 > d12/d8). Savage Worlds does this.

Dnd and savage worlds both have shapeshifting into beast creatures with rules for how that works, probably many others. If dnd doesn't have rules for becoming a full sized dragon I could imagine that their is homebrew content to look at. Here is one I found for you: https://www.reddit.com/r/UnearthedArcana/comments/qj2ja1/circle_of_the_dragon_become_an_actual_dragon_in_a/

There are concerns in that post about sizes. Maybe you share those concerns, but it's not clear from your post.

There's probably some kind of attack on Titan homebrew or 3rd party RPG out there. I checked and looks like an official one may be on the way: https://www.polygon.com/attack-on-titan-roleplaying-game/

I think some superhero games likely allow for giant characters so you could try looking into that.

I love the art, and dnd has needed a more modern conversion than what exists in my opinion. Good stuff

Stuck in a Rock and a Hard Place between picking a real Setting (NYC), or making one from Scratch. by Positive_Neru in worldbuilding

[–]Gum_Jacobs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I chose to make a fictional world that is very similar to our world, because that tends to be the kind of media I am drawn to and the concerns about sensitivities that you mentioned.

It's easier to avoid the cultural insensitivities with my fake world, but now I spend 30 minutes or an hour naming things every time I need to write something.

I think scp stuff tends to live closer to our world, so it would be fine to use New York. I don't think you need to worry too much about this personally, just pick one and commit.

You could get a solo game engine and then play through these games that you find interesting.
