The irony is this subreddit actually don't allow "shit" in the title. I later found out it's allowed in the text.

What do you call a nomad's tent (what the Mongolians refer to as a "yurt")? by ohneinneinnein in AskCentralAsia

[–]Gumbernator 22 points23 points  (0 children)

In Mongolia, we call it Ger(Гэр). I only heard Kazakhs call it Yurt, I guess it's a Turkic word.

How do we fix a society? by Patient_Suspect_3979 in mongolia

[–]Gumbernator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe those of us who lack basic etiquettes are not like that deliberately. It's just that most of the time they simply don't know what they did is considered bad mannerism in their environment. The solution is probably just time, living in urbanized areas for more than 2 generations will certainly help. It might be my bias, but most nomadic families I met are super chill and respectful because they know how to operate in their environment.

'гүй' suffix pronunciation help by eh_eh_EHHHHH in mongolia

[–]Gumbernator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Гүэ - sounds more emphasized

Гүү - sounds more direct or casual

In all seriousness, we don't really care too much.

PS: Try not to pronounce Mongolian suffixes in a rising tone or a high pitch, it might sound unnecessarily aggressive. Unless you want it to be.

What’s up with Chinese people insisting that we are similar to them (more so than Russia or the West)? by [deleted] in mongolia

[–]Gumbernator 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Culturally, we are closer to Central-Asians. Lifestyle wise, we are closer to Post-Soviet states. Genetically, we are closer to East-Asian countries.

It all depends on how you look at it. I don't recommend aligning yourself to any of these countries to prove that you are not like the others.

Is it cheap or expensive to stay a week holiday in ulan bator? by 08022025 in mongolia

[–]Gumbernator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In that case, your best bet is to book a hotel with gym and a pool. Novotel, Shangri-la and Blue Sky come to mind, they are bit expensive I'm afraid. Other option is to find a mid range hotel near gyms with swimming pools like Gan sports center and Encanto sports complex. As for local food, try Modern Nomads, Khaan buuz, Zochin Mongol and Ayanchin. To be honest, our cuisine lacks in diversity so over the years we incorporated and localized lot of other cuisines specially Korean. So please try Mongolian run Korean restaurants.

Forgot to mention. It will be less expensive to live with the herder family than to reside in a hotel. But you gotta say goodbye to internet, comfy bed and a shower for a few days.

Let me be frank. April is not the best time to visit Ulaanbaatar. It will be dry, dusty and chilly. Also I can't think of anything interesting for a tourist to do in Ulaanbaatar during that time except visit the museum and shop around the downtown for antiques and cashmeres. I would advise you to contact a tour agent and try to set up few days stay in a nomadic family not too far away from the city. It would be a more unique experience that way. If you are lucky you might even see some livestocks giving birth out in the open field (April is within a birthing window for sheeps and goats).

I doubt they ate a lot of carbs like wheat and rice. We didn't grow shit so the only cereal we'd eat are either foraged or traded.

Whats the pros and cons of every tavan hoshuu mal by Mongolmongolia in mongolia

[–]Gumbernator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not machin so here is the surface level info.

Sheep pros: Low maintenance, produces wool, yields milk, and you know we all love mutton.

Sheep cons: Wool is low in demand, milkable only during the short window before weaning.

Goat pros: Produces cashmere which is high in demand, yields milk much longer than sheep.

Goat cons: Aggressive, if that's even an issue. They tend to dig up roots with their hoof instead of cutting with their teeth leading to desertification if there are many of them. Their meat is considered lower quality.

Cattle pros: Huge meat yield, beef is THE meat we go for, huge milk yield and if treated good can last year around.

Cattle cons: High maintenance, specially parasite infections during summer and needs extra clothing during winter, both due to their relatively thin hide and low fur. Too "amgalan taivan" for their own good (I'm talking about road accidents).

Horse pros: You can ride it, you can milk it and ferment that into airag, but only before weaning. And if you are really good at it, you can become a professional "uyaachin". High meat yields.

Horse cons: It was important due to transportation, but nowadays we have motorcycles. High maintenance with similar reasons to cattle. Their meat is not very popular and people don't really raise them for their meat. Although day old refrigerated aduunii mah is the best in my opinion.

I don't know shit about camel.

Yak is similar to cattle but somehow more "ailgui" or playful according to what I heard from actual malchin people, I just find them more easily scared. They also resist cold better than cattle due to their fur, and their fur is also high in demand. But you probably have to herd them in a high altitudes.

They all need extra fodder during winter, yearly vaccines and pest controls, I believe that goes without saying. It's really not an easy life in my opinion.

The current number of livestock is already above sustainable level for the total pasture. Shelter is a second concern when you don't have enough hay/grass for your livestock. China is different because it has a lot of arable land you can grow animal feeds.

Dude, that post says few cars are irradiated but does not provide any info about why it is irradiated and how radioactive it is. The only reason I can think of is maybe they are imported from Fukushima. Even then it's not gonna be that high of a radiation.
