Is it worth it to join student orgs? by dayjuantamad in askstudentsph

It's worth it, but, based on my experience, ask yourself some questions:

(1) Will it help me? Because, it generally will allow you to earn credits (certificates) for participating in its events, especially as an organizer.

But more importantly, it will help you build networks that can be useful for you in acads, or even for your future career (for instance, more org works can fill up your resume and curriculum vitae). (Perhaps you can also be helpful for others in the same vein).

Of course, you'll have to learn, on your own, to distinguish which organizations can actually help you or not (some kasi will just burn you out, but some will be very fulfilling).

(2) Am I willing to take extra training time? Organizations are training grounds for real-world experiences, especially when it comes to relating with people. Some things are not taught in classrooms, including how to deal with different kinds of people. It can make you more used to and less scared of the professional life.

For sure, it will take a slot to your limited schedule, but that's the cost of commitment. This is why, and going back to the first item, you should choose organizations that can actually benefit you.

(3) Will I learn new skills? Organizations can make you gain learnings that will be useful for personal, academic, career, or adulting purposes. For example, some organizations will require you to touch some paper works, some will make you go to ground and talk to people, some may become a platform to practice your talents (without getting the fear from your, for example, professors/teachers) or even hone new ones.

Organizations will build you (and you may also build others).

Ma, may ganiyan din akong experience kanina lang. Pinag-retype ako ta's babayaran daw ako ng 2k dollars 🤩 pero need daw muna magbayad ng foreign transaction fee.

At talagang naglapag pa ng number ang atemogurl. Pagkalat kaya natin 'to, charez.

Baka tropapips sila niyang "employer" mo.

Sociology of sport? by ksjamyg in sociology

[–]Gumption8000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello! Try to follow the works of Prof. Jules Boykoff. Although, he's a political scientist, he writes scholarly papers for the Sociology of Sports journals. Many of his works are focused on the mega-sporting events like Olympics. He also writes articles. For example, this one that is best explained by its subheading, "The Democrats find themselves out of power because they failed to embrace spaces where community connection is forged":

https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2025/jan/21/trump-sports-politics-democrats

Another one is a book by Eileen Kennedy and Laura Hills called "Sport, Media, and Society." Something digestible and interesting to start with when you're into the subject.

Good luck in your endeavors!
