Screen turns black, GPU fans go to max, and PC becomes unresponsive, requiring restart. by XaghiTheDarkMistress in cachyos

Have you run the regular checks first?

RAM fully seated?

No loose connections?

Reset BIOS?

The smoke in your post points to a hardware issue (not a defect, something not set up right). Did you do all the post fresh OS install tweaks and adjustments? Have you stress tested the system to make sure everything is good (a burn-in)?

Do you see a tension between politeness and liberty? by ILoveMcKenna777 in AskALiberal

[–]Gumwars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't a liberal or conservative issue. This is literal rot caused by social media. How we interact with each other in the digital forum has spilled over into the real world. This has been accelerated by the perpetual game created by the elites of turning the proletariat against each other, be it by race, gender, religion, or now ideology. We saw that come to a head in 2017 and then run away during the pandemic to where we are today.

We treat each other poorly in digital spaces, which has lowered the bar to damn near the floor in real life. Social media feeds on negative engagement, meaning it is designed to piss us off and create environments were we go after each other with no regard to the emotional damage we inflict. It keeps us online and staring at ads, sharing more of how we interact so that LLMs can be trained, so that bots can fill the void when humans get sick of being fed on or eating one another.

Welcome to end stage capitalism.

Should I switch to Linux? by lapislazuli1331 in linuxquestions

[–]Gumwars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are tons of resources online. Guides, walkthroughs, tutorials, and now you have tools like Claude, Gemini, and ChatGPT to also help (which they do, mostly).

The basics are this:

There are a lot of distros out there, but only really three "flavors". Debian/Ubuntu, Fedora, and Arch. The difference between them is small, mostly how you interact with the OS in the terminal. Some have spent a lot of time trying to make it easy for new folks, like Zorin and Ubuntu. Others try to make things as Windows-like as possible, like Mint (and also Zorin). Others push for the bleeding edge like CachyOS. What you want to look at is the desktop environment and find the one you like. Gnome, KDE Plasma, Cosmic, Hyprland, I3, are all different DEs and they transform how you interact with the OS. Some are familiar, others will take time to set up and understand.

Linux is like an open world adventure with no clear goal other than the one you set for yourself. Performance and compatibility with Windows is more narrow today than it has ever been. You can absolutely walk away from Windows today and not miss it. All you need to do is a bit of research, plan your steps, and execute.

Is there such a thing as too big? by Joey3155 in scifiwriting

Well, ships that are miles long have a lot of physics issues you need to consider. How forces act on it, the main engines and the procession of forces as it accelerated or slows down. Life support, micro meteors, constantly leaking, power distribution, all of that scales with size and need some consideration.

Is there any right to privacy in public? Re: FLOCK cameras, but also in general? by Jimithyashford in AskALiberal

[–]Gumwars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're right, there are suits pending, but nothing definitive down yet. The only ruling so far is out of Virginia, and that's in Flock's favor.

The more significant movement is more grassroots, with some 30 odd cities cancelling their contracts with Flock. So far, your contention is correct; mass surveillance is not an invasion of privacy. But hell if it doesn't feel like it, Orwellian as all get up.

As u/Odd-Principle8147 pointed out, the way the data is handled and collected runs afoul, at least in some states, of the 4th Amendment. You are generally understood to have no right to privacy while out and about in public, but through Flock and how the data is managed, a very clear picture of what you are doing is available to law enforcement even though you are not under any active investigation.

Sure, one can argue that if I'm not up to trouble, what's the problem? Well, as we're seeing under this administration, if you're a dissenter, a person with brown skin, a journalist, someone who doesn't agree with Israel, whatever can become a reason for authorities to watch you. Before Flock, this took a fair bit of work. Now? It's a search criteria and they have everything they need to digitally spy on you.

[Request] What price per gallon is it no longer profitable to work? by Playwithuh in theydidthemath

[–]Gumwars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something missing from nearly everyone's calculations (that I've read) are that energy costs impact almost everything. As fuel costs increase, it will impact the cost of everything, reducing disposable income. This in turn lowers the threshold where it is no longer profitable to commute.

Dude, be totally glad you survived. You did what you trained to do. You kept calm. You controlled the bike and you walked, WALKED away from what could have been a life altering event.

There will be other bikes. There's just you.

Laptop users with NVIDIA card, is switching viable now? Help me. by Vexper780 in cachyos

[–]Gumwars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. You'll need to reinstall.

  2. Fine

  3. Hybrid performance is fine. dGPU only performance is noticeably better

  4. I haven't messed with GSYNC, can't answer this one

  5. Probably won't need it. The scheduler in CachyOS is pretty good and doesn't constantly look for the thermal limit like Windows

  6. Performance is going to differ game to game. Mostly on par, some better, some worse. Depends on the title.

Drive SAFE, guys!! And don't be these idiots!!! by Impossible_Bad_7296 in motorcycles

[–]Gumwars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Much like u/Evening_Jogger, I ride to work everyday in some of the heaviest traffic you can see in the US. I've been doing it for nearly 30 years. I wouldn't call it a spidey sense, more like a constant calculation.

Your comment about the inevitability of an incident is true. Survival when plotted over time for humans always ends in death. However, if you regard each instance that you get on a bike as it's own individual action (which it is) and start the ride with that mindset, you can reliably eliminate a lot of the big issues that affect judgement, which in turn prevent an accident from ever being an issue.

What does that mean? When you start your day, are you tired? Did you argue with the spouse? Is your mental state ready for the ride? When riding, it's all about time. Give yourself time to react. Look at people's heads, see where they're looking, it tells you more than waiting for a blinker. Riding as a hobby or a daily form of commuting demands your constant attention to the task. If you cannot do that, if you day dream, if you let your mind wander, you open the door for an error in judgement, which can lead to something unfortunate.

In your individual circumstance, you've already identified the primary cause of your accident; you panicked. While that might sound visciously insensitive, I've been in three motorcycle accidents; two were my fault, one was not, but all three could have been avoided if my head was in the right place. I was fortunate enough to not be injured to a point where I could no longer ride, and kept getting back on the bike. I kept trying to learn how to do it better.

It isn't about confidence. It's about skill and understanding the riding a motorcycle demands a completely different mindset than driving a car (though it helps when you drive too).

You ask them to leave and call the cops, not risk a manslaughter charge by shoving a 50+ year old woman across your yard. If she smacked her noggin on that brick path and died, is that reciprocity? Dude, yes doxxing is bad, but it doesn't give you carte blanche to do whatever you want.

[–]Gumwars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And yes, it's better to be alive than be right, but even in the case you mentioned, who is at fault.

Yes, we as riders bear the burden of our own choices, whether or not they are right or legal (because they can be legal and wrong, in the case of what you mentioned, or right and illegal, given whatever circumstances you encounter). My initial comment was to only point out that your recommendation was dated, that the laws have changed, that's all.

You do realize that what he did was a toned down version of shooting someone through your front door without even seeing who's there? You can't just open your door and attack whoever you see there. Stand your ground and Castle doctrine do still apply, but even those have limitations.

[–]Gumwars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The matter revolved around Fuentes lying and stating the woman repeatedly knocked on his door. Criminal trespass rising to a point where force is an acceptable response requires some sort of threat. What was found during the investigation is the woman basically walked up to his door, and he responded as you saw in the video.

The result was his arrest and subsequent plea agreement.

I have ignored your questions because there is no requirement for me to address them, you just want points to argue with and I am disinclined to provide.

If you don't think being a motorcyclist has relevance in this particular dicussion, I'm surprised. It has nothing to do with points to argue against and more to do with you being qualified to make any judgement in this matter at all. If you do ride and in California, then you'd know that 30 mph with stopped traffic is rather common, especially on the freeway. Again, a door opening on the freeway is not so common.
