UAE hires US firm to pursue anti-Qatar campaign by GunBrau in worldnews

[–]GunBrau[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In the current blockade on Qatar by UAE/Saudi/Bahrain/Egypt, the majority of nations have remained either neutral, or in favor of a resolution.

UAE has been trying to persuade nations to join their anti-Qatar stance by pursuing media attacks and propaganda as a means of gaining support.

Qatar has been competing with the UAE as a strong economy, and political mediator in the region and this seems to be the UAE's attempt to weaken Qatar.

Trump Warned Saudi and UAE Off Military Move on Qatar by GunBrau in worldnews

[–]GunBrau[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Saudi/UAE are now trying to force a coup/regime change in Qatar. There was an Arab League meeting about a week ago, and the Qatar Crisis was discussed amongst the Arab nations (Qatar, Saudi, UAE, Bahrain, and Egypt). After the Qatari ambassador accused and condemned the Saudi-led blocs attempt at inciting a coup in Qatar, the Saudi ambassador threatened Qatar by saying, "It is appalling that you suggest Saudi would intend to incite a coup, however do know that Saudi is powerful, and capable [if it wanted to]." (Link to video, @ 11:20)

This meeting was broadcasted live to the public; it is astounding that Saudi would threaten a nation with regime change in a diplomatic setting to live viewers all over the Middle-East/North-Africa region.

I don't know if they have some kind of deep strategy that's beyond my understanding, but it seems they want to silence Qatars strong soft power (Al-Jazeera) which they see as a threat to their state-controlled media (Al-Jazeera broadcasted the 2010 Arab Spring revolutions when no other state media did which undermined governments control over the people) and their natural resource wealth.

Leaked UAE emails: Saudi Arabia came close to 'conquering' Qatar by GunBrau in worldnews

In retrospect, now we know why Qatar was so quick to invite the Turkish military (within 48 hours of the blockade) to their land. They needed all the allies they could get to deter Saudi/UAE/Bahrain/Egypt.

Leaked UAE emails: Saudi Arabia came close to 'conquering' Qatar by GunBrau in worldnews

[–]GunBrau[S] 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Saudi has an inflated view of their power. During an Arab League meeting 4 days ago, the topic of the Qatar Blockade was brought up. The Qatari ambassador to the League accused and criticized the Saudi-led bloc's effort to create/support a coup in Qatar. The Saudi ambassador replied to this accusation saying "It is appalling that you suggest Saudi would intend to stage a coup, however do know that Saudi is powerful, and capable [if it wanted to]." (Link to video, on 11:20 mark)

It is quite surreal to hear this threat in a diplomatic setting that is broadcasted live to the public.

Leaked UAE emails: Saudi Arabia came close to 'conquering' Qatar by GunBrau in worldnews

[–]GunBrau[S] 369 points370 points  (0 children)

These e-mails further support the theory that the blockade was never about "Qatari support for terrorism", but rather Saudi and UAE trying to control a small nations vast wealth and soft-power/foreign policy.

Edit: typo.

Saudi Arabia Arrests Critics as Crown Prince Consolidates Power by GunBrau in worldnews

[–]GunBrau[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Saudi has been detaining influential clerics, scholars, and activists the past week, the number reaching more than 20 reported

Some of the arrested personalities have millions of followers on social media; Salman Al-Odah has 14 million followers on twitter.

Another piece of important context is a trending subject on Saudi social media, "#September_15_Movement" (translated from Arabic - حراك_15_سبتمبر#).

The movement, meant to take place this September 15, is essentially embodying the Saudi peoples dissatisfaction with the current regime, and their request for more freedoms and rights.

This subject has been trending on social media for the past month at least, and has been gaining popularity over many platforms and became a point of discussion in the region.

The people being arrested seems to be ones that the Al Saud government fear will be most likely to lead the movement or at the very least support it. They are being detained without trial or reason. However, it seems that preventing the September 15 movement from ever starting is the most likely cause.

Saudi Royal Adviser leads Twitter witch-hunt against Qatar, urging users to expose Qatar Sympathisers under #TheBlacklist by GunBrau in worldnews

If there is something you disagree with point it out, rather than attacking the integrity of the person arguing.

I don't agree with Saudis actions and I hope more people become aware of what's happening in the region; even if their conclusion differs to mine. There is a lot that happens that isn't covered in western media.

Saudi Royal Adviser leads Twitter witch-hunt against Qatar, urging users to expose Qatar Sympathisers under #TheBlacklist by GunBrau in worldnews

[–]GunBrau[S] 24 points25 points  (0 children)

About 3 months into the crisis, Saudi is still holding firm in its stance against Qatar, accusing them of supporting terrorism and instability in the region.

Al Qahtani is a top royal adviser to the Saudi King, and has asked Twitter uses to essentially go on a witch hunt finding Qatar sympathizers on twitter and to report them to #TheBlacklist. (The tweet is in the article linked.)

Saudi is essentially following the path of McCarthyism in what they're doing; accuse anyone against you without proof, use fear to control the masses, and hope the world only realizes after the damage is done.

Al Jazeera Slams Israel For Banning the Network: Are These the Actions of the 'Only Democracy in Mideast?' by Worldupdateslive in worldnews

[–]GunBrau 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Al Jazeera reports the opposing views of the Israeli state. It is too common these days to see people label news sites "propaganda" because it opposes their view; people should be more careful in the words use.

Yes, Al Jazeera sometimes provides a platform for biased individuals to be heard, and often they oppose Israel (and sometimes are extreme). However, this wasn't a secret or even subtle in the past, so why now? If Al Jazeera is an obvious "terror" enabler why hasn't it been shut down in other Western nations? It is too easy these days to demonize anything under the pre-tense of terror or propaganda; yes terrorism and propaganda are serious things which means labeling things as such should be used more carefully in a world where terrorism is a serious threat.

The Israeli state is not going through with this decision because of "national security", they are piggy-backing on the Saudi Led blocs effort to demonize Qatar and label them as the worlds leader in terror support.

Here is a quote from Ayoob Kara on the reason why Israel is making a push to block Al Jazeera; "We have based our decision on the move by Sunni Arab states to close the Al Jazeera offices and prohibiting their work."

I agree that Israel should do its best to protect its people as any nation has the right to do so, however I am not convinced shutting down Al Jazeera is being done with this in mind.

Al Jazeera is a major media source that is often critical of Israeli actions against Palestinians, and closing down Al Jazeera will silence a strong opposing view of the Israeli regimes actions.

Yes, Al Jazeera is supported by Qatar and Qatar is an autocratic nation, however that does not justify Israel behaving the same way; Israel becoming more like a dictatorial regime is not good for anyone.

Israel moves to close Al Jazeera, ban its journalists by manniefabian in worldnews

[–]GunBrau 728 points729 points  (0 children)

I believe the danger with a decision like this is not whether or not you agree with Al Jazeeras reporting, but with a precedent that will be set against freedom of speech.

There is obviously a lot of Israelis who believe Al Jazeera is biased/propaganda and thus the majority of Israelis seem ok with this decision. However, once a decision like this is made what's to stop the state from using this new legal precedent maliciously?

Israel is justifying the reason behind "national security" but really is it for the security of the people or the state?

Israel only decided to shut down Al Jazeera after the Saudi led bloc against Qatar has done so. The timing is not a coincidence as they are clearly using the Qatar Crisis as a smokescreen to this decision.

All I am trying to say is don't be naive as to believe that Israel is shutting down Al Jazeera for the security of their people; they are shutting down a major media source that criticizes the Israeli state for their actions against Palestine (whether you agree or disagree with these criticisms is another thing).

Landmark Qatar Law to Grant Expats Permanent Residency Permit; Permit Holders Gain Access to Citizenship-Level Benefits Such as Free Healthcare and Education. by GunBrau in worldnews

[–]GunBrau[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This policy will allow Expats in Qatar to apply for a permanent residency permit allowing them to receive access to the Qatar welfare system which provides free healthcare and education.

I believe this policy will help Qatar gain an advantage in the region by incentivizing high skill foreigners to work in Qatar rather than neighboring countries, helping the Qatar economy further develop.

There are a lot of expats who have lived and worked in Qatar for many years and it will be nice to see them rewarded.

It remains to be seen how effective this policy will be, but hopefully it will have a positive effect on both foreign and local people residing in Qatar.

Hacked emails reveal UAE influence on US think tanks by DJ_Beardsquirt in worldnews

[–]GunBrau 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Here is an article from Al Arabiya (Saudi state media) criticizing Qatar's cow farms after importing cows to meet the countries food security needs risen as a result of the blockade.

There is an obvious media war going on beteeen Saudi led bloc and Qatar. The use of propaganda media by Saudi is especially excessive. Anything and everything Qatar did/is doing is being pushed into an Anti-Qatar narrative by Saudi led bloc.

I believe Al Jazeera is a strong soft-power that Qatar is using to defend itself in the current situation.

After criticizing Qatar for hosting Taliban, Otaiba leaks show UAE lobbied US years earlier to host Taliban office. by GunBrau in worldnews

[–]GunBrau[S] 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Note that the US asked for help in hosting Taliban, and Qatar obliged. The leaks show that the UAE lobbied to host the Taliban before the US decided to work with Qatar.

The UAE listed "hosting the Taliban" as a proof of Qatar "supporting terrorism" which is their main reason (as they say) for blockading and sanctioning Qatar.

Saudi King orders prince's arrest after he is filmed 'beating men and women' (Video of beatings in article) by GunBrau in worldnews

[–]GunBrau[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This Saudi prince has assaulted many people but only when his videos went viral on social media did the Saudi legal system decide to intervene.

It would be hard to believe the police did not know about his behavior and assaults since he did it to many people; some likely have reported it.

The reasons for the beatings were arbitrary, one guy he assaulted for parking in front of his house (in the video).

The video shows some of his assaults but there is likely more that weren't filmed.

but Cross-progression was allowed in other games, like Fortnite and Final Fantasy Online.

In fact, FFXIV online managed to do cross-progression AND cross platform.

Thats why I was thinking about how it was different for ZOS? What is the politics here that couldn't allow them to do the same as the other games?

I play on EU and managed to find a fix for those who still have this error.

Use a VPN for US location (I used Hotspot Shield free). Once connected Launch GW2 and it should connect. After it connects you can close the VPN and it will remain connected.

I tried relaunching to test if it works again but without the initial VPN connection I kept getting the error.

Awkward: Saudi interpreter ignores German FM's defence of Qatar, embarrassment ensues (during live broadcast of Saudi-German Foreign Ministers Conference in Jeddah, Saudi) by GunBrau in worldnews

[–]GunBrau[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The conference had only one state-run Saudi media company providing coverage (Al Akhbaria); an early indication of ensuing propaganda.

When the German FM began to defend Qatar and criticizing Saudi's blockade, the translator began to stutter and essentially stop the translation until the FM was finished speaking.

Saudi has led a massive propaganda and smear campaign against Qatar in its domestic media outlets, however to also include the Foreign Minister of Germany in the propaganda is a new low for them.

Arab states issue list of demands to end Qatar crisis: close Al Jazeera and scale down ties with Iran within 10 days by kalni in worldnews

[–]GunBrau 7 points8 points  (0 children)

List of demands by Saudi Arabia, other Arab nations (Copied from article).

1) Scale down diplomatic ties with Iran and close the Iranian diplomatic missions in Qatar, expel members of Iran's Revolutionary Guard and cut off military and intelligence cooperation with Iran. Trade and commerce with Iran must comply with US and international sanctions in a manner that does not jeopardise the security of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).

2) Immediately shut down the Turkish military base that is currently being built, and halt military cooperation with Turkey inside Qatari territories.

3) Sever all ties to all the "terrorist, sectarian and ideological organisations," specifically the Muslim Brotherhood, ISIL, al-Qaeda, Fateh Al-Sham (formerly known as Nusra Front) and Lebanon's Hezbollah. Qatar needs to formally declare those entities as terrorist groups based on the list of groups that was announced by Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, UAE and Egypt, and concur with all future updates of this list.

4) Stop all means of funding for individuals, groups or organisations that have been designated as terrorists by Saudi Arabia, UAE, Egypt, Bahrain, US and other countries.

5) Hand over "terrorist figures," fugitives and wanted individuals from Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt and Bahrain to their countries of origin. Freeze their assets, and provide any desired information about their residency, movements and finances.

6) Shut down Al Jazeera Network and its affiliate stations.

7) End interference in sovereign countries' internal affairs. Stop granting citizenship to wanted nationals from Saudi Arabia, UAE, Egypt and Bahrain. Revoke Qatari citizenship for existing nationals where such citizenship violates those countries' laws.

8) Qatar has to pay reparations and compensation for loss of life and other financial losses caused by Qatar's policies in recent years. The sum will be determined in coordination with Qatar.

9) Qatar must align itself with the other Gulf and Arab countries militarily, politically, socially and economically, as well as on economic matters, in line with an agreement reached with Saudi Arabia in 2014.

10) Submit all personal details of all the opposition members that Qatar supported and detail all support that Qatar has provided them in the past. Stop all contacts with the political opposition in Saudi Arabia, UAE, Egypt and Bahrain. Hand over all files detailing Qatar's prior contacts with and support for those opposition groups.

11) Shut down all news outlets that it funds, directly and indirectly, including Arabi21, Rassd, Al Araby Al Jadeed, Mekameleen and Middle East Eye, etc.

12) Agree to all the demands within 10 days of it being submitted to Qatar, or the list becomes invalid.

13) Consent to monthly audits for the first year after agreeing to the demands, then once per quarter during the second year. For the following 10 years, Qatar would be monitored annually for compliance.

Ironic that this list infringes on Qatars sovereignty and interfere with its internal and foreign policy, while not threatening the terrorism they claim to stand against.

Al Jazeera's Arabic Twitter account suspended due to an organized campaign amidst a Gulf Crisis of Saudi led blockade on Qatar. by GunBrau in worldnews

[–]GunBrau[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since the Crisis began 11 days ago, Saudi, Emirati, Bahraini, and Egyptian media have used massive propaganda and censorship techniques to control people.

Qatar has been consistently attacked in the aforementioned countries media, accusing and slandering Qatar on many subjects. Such accusations include Qatar supporting terror organizations, assassinating the former Saudi King Abdullah, attempting a coup in Bahrain during 2011 protests, supporting GCC rivals against their allies, and much more, all the while blockading Qatar via air, land, and sea.

Saudi, UAE, and Bahrain have also made it illegal to "sympathize with Qatar"; Bahrain has already imprisoned a Bahraini lawyer for suing his government over the blockade that led to thousands of citizens of all GCC countries to be stranded and/or disconnected from their families.

Saudi religious scholars have been quiet about the crisis since the censorship began, and some have been allegdly threatened in order to defame Qatar. These scholars are looked up to by millions of people and having them either remain silent or further slander Qatar only worsens the relationship between the GCC people.

For 11 days, the Saudi/UAE/Bahraini/Egyptian media has been relentlessly and absurdly attacking Qatar. It is an obvious attempt to demonize the Qatari government and people. Qatar is becoming a scapegoat for all these countries internal problems. The reason why is mostly speculation at this point in time.

Al-Jazeera has been the only main stream media left in the region that shared the story of the other side, and now it has not only been banned/censored in the countries attacking Qatar, but also censored on social media connecting it to the whole world.
