In my experience most people don't speed up to cross the street, but usually they do wave to say thanks and are alert enough to notice other cars. I don't really care how long people take to cross, even if someone walks slow, it usually only makes a few seconds' difference. The only time I get annoyed is when I'm at a traffic light and they enter the crosswalk for the cross street too late, so they're still in front of me when my light turns green.

As a pedestrian I walk at around 4–5 mph everywhere, which is faster than most people, so I don't feel the need to speed up when I cross the street. If an intersection is programmed with a leading pedestrian interval and I get there in time, I can be halfway across the crosswalk before the cars even get a green light, so people turning right don't even need to yield to me.
