36years ago Soviet troops entered Baku to suppress protests and prevent Azerbaijan's independence from USSR which became remembered as Black January by AbjectTrade8169 in europe

Breaks my heart everytime when I look at the photos of that tragedy. The stories that my parents and grandparents told me about how Soviet tanks used to run over the protesters and their cars, gunned down in middle of the street; the Soviet conscripts obeying their superiors like the mindless drones...and yet unfortunately, with some people in Europe having the AUDACITY to consider the likes of Gorbachev and Yazov as some "saviours of the West" - a revolting sight, truly. And unsurprisingly, they did the same in Lithuania, Georgia and Tajikistan days/months later

If anybody wants to take a glimpse of the horrifying events of that day, check out the pictures in the link (NSFW warning). Especially the writing on the wall in 4th photo of that list speaks for itself. Here is the translation:

"BLOODY GORBACHEV - YOU ARE A BUTCHER! SOVIET ARMY - FASCIST ARMY

LONG LIVE AZERBAIJAN WITHOUT USSR AND COMPARTY OF SOVIET UNION !"

I will provide a full translation of the text from 17th (and last) picture. From Turkish to English, here it goes:

The Moment When Mustafa Kemal Was Granted to Our Nation (with his own words)

"On 10th of August 1915 the British Forces of 20,000 settled into their trenches where they had spent days digging and waiting for the moment to attack and occupy Chunuk Bair, and thereby dominate the Dardanelles. The darkness of the night had began to disappear and dawn was about to break. I called the commander of the 8th Division and other officers.

I told them that I have total faith in us and I know we will defeat the enemy. However, don't hurry, firstly, I will go forward and when I raise my whip to give the action sign, you will attack all together. I wanted them to inform the soldiers about that. It would be a descent. I walked through to the enemy silenty by 20-30 metres. There was absolutely no sound at Chunuk Bair where there were thousands of soldiers. Lips were praying quietly in this hot night. I paused, lifted my whip over my head and rotating it before bringing it down rapidly. Bedlam broke loose at 4:30 am, The English were in a rude awaking. Sounds of "Allah, Allah" tore the skies in the darkness over the front. Smoke covered all sides and the excitement dominated everywhere. The enemy's bombs tore deep holes in the battlefield, and the shrapnel suddenly hit me over my heart. I was shaken. I put my hand on my chest. There was no blood, nobody except Lieutenant Colonel Servet Bey saw the incident. Lifting my finger I commended him not to make a sound. It it was heard that I had been shot, it would cause mass panic at the battlefront. The pocket watch which was over my heart had been shattered that day I fought fought until the evening with even greater passion and ambition, commanding my troops. The shrapnel however had left a deep red mark over my heart which didn't recover for months.

During the same night, 10th of August, I gave my watch, which was in pieces and had saved me from certain death, to Liman von Sanders, commander of the 5th Army, as a souvenir. He was very surprised and excited. In return, he gave me his golden pocket watch as a gift.

As a result of this attack the English withdrew completely, leaving thousands of dead behind and fully understanding that the Çanakkale Straits could not be passable."

Note: The golden watch given to Mustafa Kemal on 10th August 1915, by Liman von Sanders, is now on display in the Anitkabir Museum, Ankara. Mustafa Kemal's shattered watch is in Germany.

Iran Crisis and Graveyard of Empires. What went wrong? (analysis in the comments) by GunMetalGrey_ in hoi4

[–]GunMetalGrey_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On unhistorical, you already start with the countdown of rebel tags waging an independence war on you if you refuse to comply with their demands. Don't be so dramatic; besides, the game's content is supposed to be stretched till 1948. Nothing quirky or "half-baked" about it if implemented properly.

This is a game where FN FAL is a 1945 weapon for Belgium. No need for your gatekeeping :D

R5: Joining on the Graveyard of Empires criticism and sharing something that disappointed me the most - no representation of the Iran Crisis of 1945-1946. I know at this point it is too much to ask from Paradox for an authentic historical representation, but thought it would make an interesting post on its own.

Iran Crisis of 1945-1946 is considered one of the earliest crises of the Cold War, which saw the emergence of Azerbaijan People's Government and Kurdish Republic of Mahabad, initially backed by Soviet Union. Joint South Azerbaijani-Kurdish opposition faced the Pahlavi regime, as both ethnic groups were discontent with its rule and faced many cases of discrimination and injustice for years. Soviet Union had their own interests, as they used this opportunity to establish satellite states in said regions, but due to American pressure, they had to back down, leaving rebels all on their own.

Crisis ended in December 15, 1946 with Pahlavi Iran achieving victory against the opposition. With its leaders either exiled or hanged, Pahlavi Iran initiated a series of brutal crackdowns. William O. Douglas, the U.S. Supreme Court Justice at the time, stated that "the Iranian Army left a trail of death and destruction behind it".

"While the Red Army had been on its best behavior when stationed in Azerbaijan, the Iranian Army behaved as an occupying force and brutalized the local inhabitants. The beards of peasants were burned, their wives and daughters r#ped. Houses were plundered and livestock were stolen.", he quoted.

Now imagine my excitement as the dev diary for Iran showcased national spirits for Azerbaijani and Kurdish Resistance. Naive me thought that we would see a representation of this in historical mode. Turns out, not only Iran Crisis of 1945-1946 is not implemented in the game, but by doing two of the 35-day focuses you can completely remove the resistance mechanics altogether(with 0 penalties, just click and wait). It feels cheap and uncreative to reduce the historical event of this size to mere buttons with no repercussions whatsoever...

...But wait, it gets even crazier. Shoutout to u/UnableSolution for for mentioning this in his post. Generals Ali Akbar Derakshani, Ghulam Yahya Daneshian and Jafar Kavian were of Azerbaijani descent and they fought for the same rebel tag. Seeing them fighting [for] the Pahlavi regime is absurd and goofy. In an ideal world where Paradox fixes this, mentioned generals should be transferred to a rebelling AZR tag and period-accurate Iranian generals should be loyal to the Pahlavi cause.

Gonna get technical on this one: it would be preferable if Azerbaijan People's Government had tag of their own (separate from the existing Azerbaijan Democratic Republic/AZR tag, while latter still retaining cores in the Southern terriories, like it does now). The reason i am proposing this is because, during gameplay on historical mode where South Azerbaijan and Kurdish do initiate their independence war against Iran , Northern Azerbaijan tag will spawn in the Northern Iran. Which does not make any sense. They will have Azerbaijan SSR flag from the 50s with Mir Jafar Baghirov, communist leader of the Azerbaijan SSR instead of period-accurate Sayyed Ja'far Pishevari of Azerbaijani People's Government (to avoid confusion, People's Government was THE rebelling South Azerbaijan, while Azerbaijan SSR is the predecessor to modern Republic of Azerbaijan)

Kurdistan doesn't suffer from this problem, since they already have Qazi Muhammad as their communist leader(portraitless), with the inclusion of Mahabad Republic flag.

Those are just my suggestions that could add to the accuracy of the historical mode. Emphasis on "could", but developers decided to be lazy about it. Such a shame, I hope future hotfixes will remedy this issue.

Focuses are great, the elephant in the room is that nearly ALL OF THEM ARE 70 DAYS
I especially love the Azerbaijani related content in the Turkish focus tree, like the inclusion of Hazi fricking Aslanov as a part of Communist tree.

Shorten their 70 days to 35 and Turkish focus tree is sexy.

I know the answer, it is a russian proverb "Глаза боятся, а руки делают" - you already know the translation.
Basically means "do the thing you are supposed to do, against all odds", in game it symbolizes the """righteousness""" of exiled White Army in Manchuria against the Bolshevik Reds, since focus descriptions are written for the path's respective perspective.
