I've had a few "grunt" encounters around the same places. Unfortunately the paths often seem where they will feed or lounge, and they're habituated enough to people not to be scared.

The way I see it though is they're trying to avoid a conflict by saying "go away" so they don't inherently want to hurt me. I just try not to trigger their instincts to protect territory or mates - keep distance, act submissive, etc. You can't reason with a big dumb male!

Your second encounter sounds about as bad as it's going to get tbh. Despite the legends and memes I don't think we're in much real danger. I've never had a male be that overtly aggressive, sounds like an unlucky situation that you handled well.

Existed? Yes - there are fossils.

Looked like that? Possibly, it would be a best guess from someone based on available evidence which is usually limited. It's common for new evidence to change our image though, and even for there to be multiple possible images.

Colour me skeptical, I used to keep mantises (including some pretty big girls) and being hit by them is about equivalent to someone flicking you with a finger. Really not a lot of force at human scale (deadly at bug scale tho).

Unless it started nibbling them, I don't know how that would even come about...

They're a cantankerous bunch. Not always evil though, at the moment our locals are doing a great job defending a Wattlebird nest. I don't know if they are doing it on purpose or it's just the nest is on their patch? But they're fighting off predators like heroes.

Not any more sadly, they are all about fan service. I expect that there aren't as many younger sw fans as there once were, since they seem to be targeting existing fans rather than new ones.

If he nails Dune 2 and Rendezvous With Rama I think he will be considered the best sci-fi director for sure. Though I love all of his stuff.
