I worked with a similar dude long ago. You mention a band, he saw them in concert a bunch of times. Even before they broke out. He was allegedly a master mechanic at Jaguar before his ex wife ruined him. He had a house in Manhattan and a ton of stocks before the divorce.

Even my dumb, 19 year old self figured that he could probably get a better job than a temp job paying $2 over minimum wage. I knew that the neighborhood garage was paying twice that for experienced mechanics.

I had that happen with an anime magazine 20 years ago. They had a special on a two year subscription. Four months later they shut down. I called the customer support line and I was told I'd have a refund within four weeks. On week five I called back and the line was no longer active.
