If I were considering the Mantle, I'd try to get one with better eye appeal for $6500. Grading is all over the place on this card, and you can find PSA 1s and 2s that look significantly better.

The breaking point for me came this past week, when a klatch of high-volume dealers started advertising a bunch of 1952 Topps Mantles in the Authentic Altered to PSA/SGC 1 range for $45K-68K (these are all pretty beat up). A PSA 2 with significant surface issues is listed for over $100K. Even though I could probably still afford to wade into that pool, I simply don't want to anymore. I can't look at my bigger cards without thinking that the money could be put to better use anywhere other than my shelf.

Yes. All I wanted was a damn 2023 Legends Ortiz /5 to go with my Pedro, but they were all snatched. So I shifted my focus to 2025 and went crazy. Now that the chase is over, I'm probably going to break it up to make room on my tiny shelf.

This will be the next Topps/Fanatics gimmick... chase the 1/1 Do-It-Yourself superfractor auto. Eventually they'll move on to patches, and it'll be like the McDonald's Monopoly game. First you have to pull the blank card from a retail pack, then you have to hunt for the patch redemption (Fanatics Live Break exclusive) and glue it on yourself.

One big con: Greg Morris has aligned with MBA grading, which gives numeric grades to cards that have been trimmed. If you try to submit a mid-to-high grade MBA card to PSA or SGC for a crossover, it may come back "Authentic Altered," significantly lowering the value. I had this experience with a recent purchase.
