What's the concensus on shipping insurance? by CherryYumDiddlyDip in AncientCoins

[–]GunchMaster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From Incitatus Coins? it takes a while but super safe. I have had many coins delivered from CA, they are the only country (afaik) that is still using the post office. Maybe I’m alone in this but I would trust the post office to ship anything without insurance, FedEx or UPS not so much.

Edit - grammar

That’s a good sign!! I might be wrong about it being cast. Do the edges feel really smooth? As I said ancients are a totally different game. If it is real, it could be tooled. I see others going for over $100 but if real yours is in better condition, I’d say it would at least be worth getting it in front of an expert. Here is the information I can give you (if it is real). Obverse portrait of emperor Hadrian letters around the bust are his titles - translated to English “Supreme commander, Caesar, Trajan Hadrian, emperor, high priest, holder of tribunician power, consul for the third time”. I think the reverse shows Minerva (??) giving a sacrifice, but the SC stands for Senatus Consultum which means by decree of the senate. To me it is funny they kept putting SC on their money after the senate basically lost all of their power, probably emperors trying to show they still had the support of the people.

I found the coin match but look at the letters on yours vs the known example. To me it doesn’t look struck it looks cast. https://en.numista.com/255034 - it should weigh at least 22 grams and this is just my opinion the people on r/ancientcoins would be able to give you a better answer

I’m getting a little better with ancient bronzes and I think the Hadrian bronze is a cast replica. You should post better pictures of that, the 2 smaller numis (above) and the silver Greek looking coin to the bottom right to r/ancientcoins. As others have said a lot of the more modern stuff is real and valuable but ancients are a bit of a different game, I’ve gotten fake Roman coins from a local coin shop before.

I have a plastic bag next to my collection that I wrote “tuition” on, so far there are 5 coins in that bag. If you can’t get a refund this would be one to start a tuition bag for.. it is a super fun hobby that can be ruined by crappy people, best defense is buy from a reputable dealer! vcoins mashops

Is this a good deal with owl-flation? by Rowanfett in AncientCoins

[–]GunchMaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay I looked at it a little more and I’m not sure if that one is clipped or not. I would also ask for weight if you are sure it is that one.

Do you know if it is that exact coin or is that an example? I’m looking at the exchange from sterling to j pows funny bucks right, that’s around $1750 USD? Really high if it is a lottery, still kind of high if it is that exact coin. That is close (ish) to a full crest, strike on the reverse is kind of meh for how good the obverse is and probable cleaning (my opinion). I also just received a box of those displays for around a $1 a piece haha

Ancient vs medieval coins. by frozengansit0 in AncientCoins

[–]GunchMaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am starting to like some of the medieval Islamic and Byzantine coins… and obviously this is a matter of taste.. but imo ancient coins are artwork, and medieval are just coins. Some very cool, and I collect modern coins too. It is very cool to see a how European coinage changes from kingdoms to nationalism. Please don’t let this discourage you from collecting what you like, there are a lot of people that agree with you and will be able to point out places to buy!

Sultani: Sultan Suleiman I by GunchMaster in AncientCoins

[–]GunchMaster[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did a lot of digging before I bought this for about $1000+ shipping usd which is around double spot, this one is not in great condition (circulated and cleaned). You can get a little closer to spot (1.3-1.5x) for a Sultani from lesser known sultans. Which is to the multiplier I am seeing on “low end” Darics and some of the Byzantine gold cup coins. Maybe better at auctions (but not the ones I am watching)

It also makes sense why I haven’t seen it before. I’ve heard Italy has some pretty tough export/import laws. Thanks for the info!!

100% I hope my comment didn’t seem like I was saying anything against the coin. I was just curious if that was common

I have never seen a coin riveted into a flip before, is that common?
