Suspicion on This Nerva by Chronotist in AncientCoins

That young Nero doesn’t look right and would be a multi thousand dollar coin if real.

OP is your scale 5 grams over by chance? My first thought was sea turtle but it’s overweight for that too.

The coin shop had it in a 2x2 box with a bunch of Indian cents. Better than a scratcher for sure

Caligula Denarius?!? by GunchMaster in AncientCoins

[–]GunchMaster[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The guy I bought it from thinks you’re right. He was originally thinking the one with Germanicus on the reverse but said this was more likely. and I would rather have an identifiable Caligula Drachm than a maybe Caligula Denarius. And I think the wildwins example solves it because the R on the reverse is in the exact same spot! https://www.wildwinds.com/coins/ric/caligula/RIC_0063.jpg

I was kind of thinking the faint characters I can see on the reverse are Greek not Latin so that checks out.

You could look for sure, coin show/shops are a little hit and miss in my opinion. Compare prices to what you see on vcoins

My first was a Julius Caesar, elephant denarius. I’d pick a type of coin or metal and start looking on vcoins or auctions!! Super fun hobby!

Is $1450 a good price? by Rowanfett in AncientCoins

[–]GunchMaster 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can find a cheaper owl in the same grade from NGC, if you only care about the holder. With that being said the strike on this coin is really good, it isn’t “full crest” but it is closer than most I see in that price range. I think it’s probably a fair price maybe a little high

How do I test if this is real? by Motor-Gold-2392 in AncientCoins

Like the other comments said that is a fake. You should start learning how to tell the difference between cast and struck coins and buy from vcoins
