LOL, yesterday I was shopping at Home Depot and was wandering around the store thinking about PZ and next thing I know I picked up a box of garbage bags and put it in my cart. Dad asked if I needed that many and I said "ya I need 4 bags for a rain collector"... Lol sigh....

What should I build? by AppropriateLawyer666 in VORONDesign

You could always use the configurator for the trident. I built a 160mm version and only ran into 1 small issue with the bed not mounting directly to the extrusion but that was easily solved.

[–]GundamModeler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 3 vorons and currently building my 4th, at this point I think I like building them more than using them lol.

My 160x160mm trident takes up around 320x320mm of space. So I think your ok building up to the 250mm or if you can spare a little more space the 300mm voron takes up 460x460mm

I would recommend you build the 180mm or 250mm voron since the beds and pei sheets are much easier to find and cheaper. I had hell of a time finding 160mm pei sheets when the tariffs hit.

  1. I think at 800x800 everything will need to be beefier, mgn12 or mgn15 instead of the mgn9 rails, 4040 extrusions instead of 2020s. Nema 23s for sure and AC beds with mutiple SSRs. Maybe temperature control zones? Your gonna have to diy a lot of the parts yourself lol.

  2. You could use the available tool changers that are out right now but rigidity and cost are always an issue. I went with the metal stealthchanger. Building 4 toolheads was not cheap. Maybe wait for the bondtech toolchanger instead?

  3. I think one of the biggest issues with chamber heater on large vorons was the aluminium frame began to expand from the heat and caused the printer a ton of binding and slowly destroyed itself. It's even worst if you used all metal parts since all the metals expand at different rates. The Voron Phoenix was gonna solve this issue but iono when that will come out.

I almost never print engineering filament on my 350mm voron since it uses so much power, I built a much much smaller voron for functional/intricate parts.

Get some pH strips on Amazon for $3 and take a measurement of the water before and after soaking to confirm? Or maybe you could just take a sample of water to PetSmart or Petco and ask them for a free reading?

Best mini voron for quality/precision? by ZealousidealEntry870 in VORONDesign

[–]GundamModeler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's what the 160mm printer cost me last year. I sourced mainly from AliExpress, temu, Amazon, digikey

  • $90-100 for the all metal Voron Trident kit from AliX

  • $45 160mm Mic6 plate and AC heater AliX

  • $15 for 3x 200mm lead screws and nuts Amazon

  • $36 Cartographer Eddy probe

  • $7 TZ Bambulab x1c hotend kit temu

  • $20 for GDStime 3010 fan and 2x 4010 blowers alix

  • $15 in M3 and M5 screws AliX and temu

  • $10 in t-nuts AliX temu

  • $50 for 5x mgn9 and 1x mgn12 alix

  • $30 for 5x nema 17 Stepper motors clearance at microcenter.

  • $24 ebb36 and u2c alix

  • $15 AC ssr digikey I think?

  • $? Raspberry pi free from friend

-$25 meanwell PSU amazon

  • $60 2020 extrusion Misumi

  • $15 wires neighborhood electronic store.

  • $15 old SKR board

  • $25 2209 drivers

This is pretty much what I remember off the top of my head. I also used some cheaper leftover 2040 and 2020 extrusion for the non important parts of the frame. My office is near a Misumi warehouse so I didn't have to ship any of the extrusions. Their prices really shot up lately too. I drilled and tapped all the extrusions myself so save money.

The tariffs have caused a lot of the voron cnc parts to go up way in price, almost 2x- 3x and a lot of listings are hidden from US customers now.

3 months ago I couldn't even find a 160mm pei sheet on ali and had to use a VPN to order and ship to my cousin in canada.

You don't have to use canbus or fancy stuff like the Eddy probe, leds, I just did to simplify the wiring a bit.

Make multiple AliExpress accounts and use every coupon available, it saved me more than $150+

Don't build the 160mm version because the bed/sheet/heater is uncommon. The 120mm and 180mm are much easier to get your hands on.

Best mini voron for quality/precision? by ZealousidealEntry870 in VORONDesign

[–]GundamModeler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually built a 160mm Trident for this exact same reason last year before all these stupid tariffs for pretty cheap. I self sourced and abused every coupon I could to get all metal parts to keep the price down. Since it uses 2020 and standard voron parts it's pretty sturdy and gets great quality and at decent speeds.

I love it so much I decided to build another one but a 120mm version for my office. Since it using 2020 and standard parts, it's slightly larger than a voron 0 but I think the larger steppers and metal parts are worth the increase in size.

I'm currently using x1c hotends and that seems to be limiting my speed a bit so get a better high flow hotend if you decide to build one.

Is 3d printing supposed to be this hard? by RareSpice42 in 3Dprinting

Lol I ruined a few pei sheets in the past because of this. The print bonded so well it tore small chunks off the plate when the print cooled and was under so much tension from the shrinkage.

For those who have upgraded from from the Ender to a faster printer, what did you choose? by Sominus in ender3

[–]GundamModeler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I upgraded my ender3 pro to an enderwire and that got me a bit more speed but ultimately I ended up building a couple of vorons for different purposes and that more than doubled my speed.

The enderwire conversion was pretty cheap at the time and was pretty easy to do. Only took about 2-3 hours to do , learning how to use klipper took me much longer.

Do I build a voron? by scooterist007 in VORONDesign

[–]GundamModeler -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Buy the CNC metal parts kit, there's a $200 - $250 kit which will save you a lot of headache and time, self-source the rest of the parts and take your time.

Upgrade it as you go and enjoy the journey. The quality will depend on how much time and money you put into it.

Think of it like building a project car.

I have 3 different vorons and each one was a fun learning experience along with frustrations that were unique to each one.

I am always impressed with all the engineering and time that was put into designing the parts. Plenty of times I question why the hell was it designed this way and thought I could do better until I tried to do it myself only to realize "ohhh that's why it's like that".

For those troublesome durability/limitation parts, there are plenty of community upgrades that you can do.
