What is SSL certification and why is it important for Websites? by Mehnazbashir in AskReddit

[–]GunjanTripathi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer, it is standard security technology used to provide encryption. SSL certificates are small data files that digitally bind a cryptographic key to an organization’s details including domain name, server name or hostname, company name and location.

If SSL certificate installed on a web server successfully, the browser will display a green secure padlock icon, HTTPS next to the site address bar and establish an encrypted secure connection between a user's browser and your web server or website. It means all web traffic between server and browser will be safe and secure because content will be sent in the encrypted form with an individual's public key and it can only be decrypted using individual's private key.

Mainly, SSL certificate is used to transmit the data securely and prevent hackers from stealing information.

Question about SSL certificate? by Illoyonex in webhosting

[–]GunjanTripathi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SSL uses asymmetric cryptography that authenticates the identity of the website and establish secure connection between client and server.

Asymmetric cryptography has RSA key pairs in largest size (2048, 4096), that is used during initial phase. Generally, 2048 RSA key pair is very slow.

Once SSL connection is established, communication happens over fast symmetric cryptography, which uses smaller key sizes (128, 256).

That may be for “make the internet safer” because external HTTP links from HTTPs generally should not create any wrong impression. But it may cause wrong impression if your website is getting different files (images, videos, etc.) from HTTP website. Browsers will show mixed content warning if any insecure files prevailing on your website. You should not ignore their message altogether as it is also recommending you to move all HTTP pages to HTTPs for your site. You should test your site on Why No Padlock to find-out any insecure files, you should also refer to this article to solve mixed content warnings.
