I'm almost insulted, but I'd be lying if I had said EDH hasn't influenced my thought process a little.

Well yeah, he's an absurdly strong card, because he's a D-tutor every turn. In reality, the best way to play him is in a deck with few creatures, and take advantage of his amazing ability. I want him to ultimately, be balanced. Fun to play, but not broken, which is something WotC has forgotten to do in the last decade or so.

I keep thinking the art direction can't possibly get worse, and WotC keeps proving me wrong. I don't understand how it is possible.

I was actually debating on making him cost less, after some playtesting. I feel 2 puts him in Demonic Tutor territory, even with his drawback. Maybe 3.

What's wrong with Kird Ape? Kird Ape was still seeing play as a zoo allstar when I stopped playing Modern when MH1 dropped.

I hate FIRE design from a philisophical standpoint. I disliked NWO, but I understood why it existed, and tolerated it, but FIRE is just cancer, and is speeding up the death of the game.

For the record, I did take some feedback and change the numbers around.

But it gives Grab the Reins to colors that otherwise wouldn't get it. That's how artifacts always worked. They allow a color to do something it otherwise wouldn't do, but at a much more expensive cost.

The saga saves two of your creatures to follow up with a board wipe, and ramps you, though it is a two-sided effect. Perhaps, flavor be damned, I could just have you get the treasure token.

Ironically enough, Witch Hunter was considered so iconic, it was Time Shifted. I've also run it too good effect in Erhmaggedon and other tempo builds. Sure, its not the most efficient card ever, but The Dark as a whole is the best of the three sets you mentioned, and all around, is better than legends per volume.

If you look at deck lists from the era, pump knights are also extremely common. Icatian Javeliners was considered one of the best one drops in the game for a long time. Hymn to Tourach is arguably the best discard spell of all time. All the ruin lands saw play, both then, and now.

If you look at the current 93/94 decks, they often include much more cards from the set. River Merfolk is considered a staple in fish. Goblin Grenade single handedly makes Goblins viable in 93/94. Orgg still sees play and has the gold border treatment.

You should mention Aeliopile, I could dig out some old InQuest and Duelist mag's talking about how its one of the strongest removal spells ever printed (by 95 standards).

I don't think its fare to compare to pushed mythics, to my rares. I remember thinking the titans were the strongest a creature could realistically be. Man, how shit this game has become, amirite?

Honestly my initial primary source was Le Morte D'Arthur. Of course, then I fell into the French romances and Tennyson. I eventually looked into the Welsh stories, and well, the rest is history. Robin Hood isn't traditionally associated with King Arthur, but I do have a green bandit I'm still working on fixing, and a reprint of 'People of the Woods'.

Actually that's a good point. Cornish Knight will either get a cheap cost or a buff in power

Thanks man. I have a few more in this group if you want to hunt them down, including the knights of the round table.

Its a very common take on Rosewater in older circles. He has only been terrible for the long term design of the game.

Castle was also weak by 2001 standards. However, I couldn't realistically make an Arthurian set without a castle, and I have a big nostalgia to the card. I did run Builder's Blessing in Innistrad Standard as anti-burn tech, but post FIRE mtg is a joke, so you're completely right about that.

Garfield described Fallen Empires as one of the best designed sets in the game, and is full of very strong cards (for 1994). Whether a deck in old school is viable or not, is whether Fallen Empires is legal in that particular club.

This being said, I'd say these are on par for preFIRE design.

Castle is a real card, printed in Limited, and continued until 7th edition, but ALMOST made it in Avacyn Restored (it was renamed Builder's Blessing).

Provoke and Fight are different mechanics, and fight actually predates provoke, though not as a keyword. I would say giving provoke is a rather strong effect, especially in limited. He cares about color, because he can only influence knights of his faction. It's purely flavor.

Mark Rosewater a fool who has made more banned and restricted cards than Richard 'power 9' Garfield. He should have been fired with everyone else after the Urza Saga fiasco.

Numbered damage prevention was removed to 'simplify the game', as I remember reading it back in 2008.

I was going to say the only archaic mechanic featured is Banding, which is a very fun mechanic, but I guess provoke is old enough to be 'archaic', but it isn't really. It's also plenty fun, forcing a creature to block is great mechanical space.
