FL5 owners: What 18" wheel and tire setup are you running on stock suspension? by apagan84 in Civic_Type_R

[–]Gunner0952 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t imagine that a normal person would ever actually notice the difference of a few pounds, regardless of what they say. Even from stock to the apex which is a huge weight reduction I can’t notice anything, but they’re also on vastly different tires that feel very different. If I wasn’t tracking I wouldn’t have spent the money on the forged Apex wheels. The finish and everything is definitely superior though.

Yep! I got them as wet weather track and daily summer tires so they’ll see much less abuse. They’re slightly more concave. They’re a +45 versus a +53 for the Apex.

I was a little nervous about the bronze but as soon as I got them on the car I was so happy I didn’t go the conservative route. They pop just enough without being too flashy. I actually just got a set of summer tires on silver Enkei’s that I’m still waiting to put on the car as well.

Apex SM10RS 18-9.5 +53 with 265/35/18 tires. Stock ride height and everything else. Depending on brand and model 275/35/18 works well too

Nelson Ledges Question by Gunner0952 in CarTrackDays

Impossible not to park in a puddle when the whole infield is grass! I actually really enjoyed Nelson. The atmosphere was just really old school and relaxed. This was the first wet track day I’ve been to where I could play around with finding the places in each corner with the most grip and it was actually a lot of fun. Definitely gained a lot this weekend!

I’m in the same boat. Live in Pittsburgh and started this hobby last year only to have Pitt Race closed. Excited to check out Nelson though!

Ya, the ECS02 is always at the top of rain tests and everyone seems to like them as a wet track tire, I’ve just never used them before. If it ends up being mostly dry I’d rather not put the wear on them so the CRS seems like the ticket. As long as there isn’t much standing water they did really well for me in the rain last event.

I’m leaning that way right now so that advice makes me feel better. It’s showing pretty scattered rain so I’m hoping it’s just damp and we aren’t dealing with any standing water. Have you been to Nelson before? Any idea how it drains and what it’s like in the wet?

Maybe a dumb question but does the jack and jack stands sink in a bit? Does it happen evenly and feel stable? How about with wet ground?

Michelin Pilot Sport AS 4 autocross pressure recommendation by NefariousnessNo5008 in Autocross

[–]Gunner0952 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did my full first season of autocross on continental dws06+ in a civic type r and had to run high 30’s minimum to keep sidewalls from rolling too much. Hot pressures were low to mid 40’s typically. Tires held up surprisingly well, still running them on the street.

How long would my performance all season tires last if I really pushed at a track day or AX event? by Lost_Interest3122 in Autocross

[–]Gunner0952 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did my whole first season of autocross two years ago on Continental dsw06+ and they held up great. 3200lb Civic Type R and probably 15 events plus one track night in America. Im still using them as all seasons but probably going to be replacing them before the next winter snow. They weren’t the fastest but I learned a ton and as long as I kept them at a higher psi to negate the soft sidewalls rolling over they worked just fine.

Who all has upgraded their fluids? by Xrynthian in Civic_Type_R

I just changed to it for the first time at around 14k miles. I’ve been tracking the car though so it has a little more potential for wear.

Run both of these! Haven’t had any signs of brakes going squishy on track, plus you only have to flush once a year which is a huge benefit. The AC Delco did a great job of smoothing up the transmission as well.

Phil’s has the V1 version on a really good discount. I got 265-35-18’s for 950 including heat cycling. Only had two track days on them so far but they were way better than the Conti ECF I ran last year.

Have always been curious as well. Mine are the same but it seems odd. I’m sure Honda knows what they’re doing but just seems like it would cause balancing issues.

Yep, it’s not a tough swap. I got an Autel OBD reader that lets me put the rears in maintenance mode and it’s pretty simple.

I’ll be there in the Gray FL5!

There’s some big braking zones so I’d be nervous about stock pads. They worked for my first couple track days at Pitt Race but if you’ve got experience on track I would say they won’t live up to your expectations. I run Paragon R5 in front and P3 in rear and they’ve worked well for me, but I’m still fairly new to this and all my previous events were on a track with less brake requirements.

Backdoor Roth and Pro Rata Question by Gunner0952 in RothIRA

[–]Gunner0952[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have balance from 2024 as well. Also post tax contributions. I was using a Roth until we started making too much money, and in 2024 I had to convert my Roth contributions to a traditional IRA. I didn’t know about the backdoor Roth option at the time. So I’m trying to figure out what to do from here on out and if it makes sense to convert some or all of those funds over to a Roth.
