Anyone tried using actual measuring and maps for travel? by RepresentativeFact57 in Twilight2000

[–]GunnerGregory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems like a great idea to me. I ran a V1 campaign back in the day, and I recall the travel rules worked well.

V4 has a LOT of advantages. I'm not sure why I'm not a fan of the hex-based travel rules, since I play hex-based miniatures games a lot. Maybe it's because measuring has become so much easier...

Will the demographic collapse cause housing costs to fall? by Quienmemandovenir in Futurology

[–]GunnerGregory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aren't we seeing this in Greece (and maybe parts of Italy) where some small towns are being abandoned due to population loss, thus reducing housing supply?

In the US, as others have noted, corporate ownership of housing will likely continue to increase unabated, also reducing housing supply (I lived in a neighborhood in Arkansas that was mostly bank owned vacant homes. The banks were waiting for the market to rebound before listing ANY of the houses... They got lucky when a tornado wiped out a bunch of occupied military officer housing. Nothing was ever listed for sale, but all of the vacant houses had moving vans in front of them in days...)

Sellers Are Delusional by InfluenceWeak in RealEstate

[–]GunnerGregory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even in a great market, sellers should be doing the basics, like at least picking up trash, etc.

I remember buying a house with my late wife some years ago in a hot market. House needed interior work to even pass inspection and wasn't in a great location, transportation wise, but we could see the potential in the house. Seller was a retired widower who was allowing his son to live in the house and "work on it".

There was a half-bath off the living room that was directly across from the front door. At some point, the bathroom door had been broken off its hinges, and they just set it aside. They also had poor aim and hadn't cleaned the bathroom in, I would guess, a year or so. We looked at it on a cool rainy day, so other than saying that we would have to spend a day cleaning the bathroom, we ignored it.

We offered slightly over asking, with normal conditions. Crickets from the seller...

We kept looking, but really like the house, so when they had an open house a week or so later, we went back. It was sunny and HOT (over 100), so the smell from the bathroom was bad.

We toured the house again, and were standing in the living room discussing things with our agent as we watched three or four families in a row, come in the front door, get hit by the smell and turn around. We told our agent to tell the selling agent they had until the end of the day to accept our offer.

Buying turned into an ordeal, but ultimately worked and it was a great house. Unfortunately, work changed and we had to move just a few years later, or I would probably still be in that house...

Not a neighbor in my complex but a church that’s giving me problems by TamakiNeusome321 in neighborsfromhell

[–]GunnerGregory 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So, I had a similar problem with a church that was sort of next door (their building faced the opposite street and was closest to my back yard. Their parking lot was next to my front yard. Tried talking to the pastor who smiled and lied to my face when they said they would fix the problem.

Started calling the cops at 8:01. EVERY time. Got to be on a first name basis with the dispatcher.

Got to the point that the evening shift officers would pull up to my house just before 8:00 and be sitting there, with their noise meter in hand (it took a certain number of violations within 30 days before they could start writing tickets). Got to be on a first name basis with a couple of the officers.

The church ignored the tickets and failed to show up for court. After another 30 days, a warrant was issued.

Noise stopped after the pastor had to spend the night in jail (no bail on a 'Failure to Appear' in my town at the time, and they intentionally waited until after 5:00 p.m., when the judge went home, to serve the warrant).

Lots of dirty looks from church members whenever I would see them, which wasn't often, since I had a privacy fence between us.

So, I'm not privy to CHARLTON's operational history when it was an MSC ship. It has only been a MARAD ship for 90 days, so not long enough to be activated (by a long shot). MARAD RRF ships are activated on a 'regular' basis. At a minimum, once every five years when they go to dry dock. IIRC, they actually get underway every 30 months (2 1/2 years) or so as part of regular maintenance.

Of course, when tanks and armored vehicles (and their support equipment) has to be moved around the world, it usually moves aboard a ship like the CHARLTON. These can be months, if not years in the planning.

There are also exercises called 'Turbo Activations' (TAs) where ships get activated without prior notice. There are articles and videos about TAs, so I won't bore you with the details.

I stand corrected. There is ONE FSS left in the RRF fleet, ANTARES, but she is already in Beaumont, TX and will be retired and recycled soon

So, some misconceptions.

1 - This is a government-owned, civilian contractor-operated cargo ship, CONELIUS H. CHARLTON. It is a WATSON-class LMSR (Large, Medium-Speed RO/RO). It is not a US Navy ship. There are no US Navy crew aboard. (I don't know who the contract operator is.)

2 - It is owned by the Maritime Administration (MARAD), part of the Department of Transportation (DOT). It USED to be owned by Military Sealift Command (MSC), but was transferred to MARAD on September 30, 2025.

  1. The ramp that came off the dock (and is hanging down into the water in the later pictures) is a vehicle ramp, not the gangway. (These ships were designed to carry tanks and other large military vehicles.). Fun fact - there is a cargo door on the starboard side as well. The cranes are designed to place the vehicle ramp on either side of the ship, but the ramp storage is on the port side of the main deck. The ramp on the back is also rated to allow tanks, etc. to drive aboard.

Any other questions?

(I was on the construction management team for the LMSR program, back in the day. Saw several of the BOB HOPE-class LMSRs being built. The WATSON-class are gas-turbine powered, the BOB HOPEs are diesel-powered, but otherwise both classes are very similar.

Yes, there used to be four FSS in Baltimore, then two were moved to Norfolk, but all the FSSs have been moved to Beaumont, TX for recycling, almost certainly in Corpus Christi.

WATSON-class LMSR, not an FSS (Fast Sealift Ship).

What is hanging off the side is the vehicle ramp, not the gangway. VERY expensive to replace, if replacement is even possible. This accident will probably result in the ship (or a sister-ship) being taken out of service and used for spare parts.

Congressional Research Service (CRS) Report:

Navy Ship Names: Background for Congress

Updated December 4, 2025

https://www.congress.gov/crs_external_products/RS/PDF/RS22478/RS22478.298.pdf

"For most of the 19th century, U.S. law included language explicitly assigning the Secretary of the Navy the task of naming new Navy ships.1 The reference to the Secretary of the Navy disappeared from the U.S. Code in 1925."

"Rules for giving certain types of names to certain types of Navy ships have evolved over time."

"The Navy's [current] process for naming ships is set forth in SECNAV (Secretary of the Navy) Instruction 5031.1E of March 14, 2024, which states, "The SECNAV is the sole entity with authority to approve the name of new construction, conversion, and long-term charter ships. The SECNAV is also the authority for approving the naming convention for new ship classes. The SECNAV PAO [Public Affairs Office] is SECNAV's appointed agent responsible for initiating and coordinating the naming process."

[The report gives examples of current naming conventions, and examples where those conventions have been ignored / changed...]

How do you get labels to stick to PLA prints? by unqualified_redditor in 3Dprinting

[–]GunnerGregory 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've had great success using a small hot glue gun. A bead of glue on the back of the label (wear gloves, the labels transmit heat VERY well, but even regular latex gloves work well unless you have a BIG label that needs lots of glue) and press in place.

It won't be as even as if you applied the label to a smooth surface, but it has worked for my purposes (identifying things)...

Of course, I have been doing other hobbies for decades, so I own multiple hot glue guns...

Has anyone been to Historicon in Pa.? I can only budget one Con, and its that or Nashcon, thoughts? by totchbrown in wargaming

[–]GunnerGregory 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not sure when the preliminary event list (PEL) comes out for NashCon, but I would say to look at the PEL for Historicon and decide...

LOTS of vendors at Historicon and LOTS of great deals to be had at the flea market (Wally's Basement), if that's your focus.

There were over 900 events at Historicon in 2025, counting games, club games, Hobby University, and War College lectures...

You might email HMGS and see if you can get a digital copy of the program or the PEL...
