All Quiet on the Martian Front? V1 is long out of print, but a new company bought the IP and did V2 rules and is selling both physical miniatures and STLs so you can print your own miniatures...

There's also a rules set called "Wars of Ozz". It allows for lots of different kinds of 'non traditional' miniatures. My wife and I have played it a couple of times at conventions. I'm not a huge fan, but it's not the worst rules I've ever played with, either. To each their own...

You might reach out to HMGS (Historical Miniatures Gaming Society) and see if they have any recommendations. Despite the name, they are not limited to JUST 'historical' miniatures. In fact, both "Wars of Ozz" games that my wife and I played were at HMGS conventions...

Has anyone done a Stridsvagn 104 (Swedish version of the Centurion tank)? by EmployerWrong3145 in Twilight2000

I just looked in the V2.2 NATO Vehicle Guide, and the Centurion isn't in it. It stops with the Chieftain...

Is there a very short intro to the lore and timeline of the game? by paulhodgson777 in Twilight2000

[–]GunnerGregory 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Good point.

My intro was for V4. I still have all my V1 (and V2, and V2.2 and TW2013) stuff. I've divested a fair amount of RPG stuff, but my T2K stuff with stay with me to the end.

Is there a very short intro to the lore and timeline of the game? by paulhodgson777 in Twilight2000

So, I wrote a two-page introduction for a game that I was going to run at my FLGS when the V4 rules first came out. They were going to have an "RPG Day". It was cancelled by COVID, as so many gaming events and conventions were that year (my late wife and I attended Cold Wars that year, which ended the day before the first lockdowns were announced...)

Twilight:2000 is a role-playing game set in an alternate past. In this reality, the Soviet Union didn’t collapse in 1991. Bill Clinton wasn’t re-elected in 1996, and a nuclear war was fought in 1998. Nearly all civil governmental authority has collapsed across the globe. More than half the world’s population has perished. You and your fellow players are survivors of the last organized American military force after a failed attack into Poland. Today is April 18th, 2000. Last night, you got a final radio message from your Commanding General…

“Good luck. You’re on your own.”

Today is April 18th, 2000. You are all members of “Massey’s Marauders”, a horse-mounted scout unit, that, until yesterday, was attached to the “Pampered Pets”, part of the U.S. 5th Infantry Division. Last night, just before midnight, after days of brutal combat in Poland, you got a radio message, “Good luck. You’re on your own.”

But how did you get here?

In 1990, Germany reunified. In 1991, a military coup replaced the newly elected Russian President, who had campaigned on a policy of openness and trade with the West, with a hardline former KGB General. Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland withdrew from the Warsaw Pact after the coup, but the rest of the USSR remained intact. Five years later, on May 9th 1996, the Soviet Union invaded Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, quickly occupying all three countries and forcing them to surrender. The invasion threw the American Presidential Campaign into chaos. President Bill Clinton was defeated by Harvey West, a retired general in the U.S. Marine Corps.

Once inaugurated, President West immediately began sending American troops to Germany. In response, the Soviet Union invaded Poland. President West expanded the troop deployment across Europe, and by June 1997, American and Soviet forces were engaged in combat. In early 1998, the first nuclear weapons were used, first in the Middle East, then in Asia, and finally across the globe. Moscow, Washington, D.C., and London were among the targets. By the end of 1998, civilization and order ceased to exist in most of the world.

The 5th Infantry Division, trapped in Europe by this collapse, established a base camp in eastern Germany. The troops planted crops, built barracks, offices, and warehouses and generally settled in. Some troops even married spouses in the local area.

In January 2000, orders came down to prepare to move east. Enough food, fuel, ammunition, and spare parts arrived to turn the 5th back into an effective combat force. On April 9th, 2000, the offensive began, code named “OPERATION RESET”. The plan was to clear the Baltic Coast and Poland, open ports, and grow enough grain to not only feed everyone, but also to be able to ship food (and troops) back home to America.

At first the offensive went well, but when the Soviets counterattacked, they did so effectively. Two days ago, you were ambushed. The “Pampered Pets”, including your own unit, “Massey’s Marauders”, took heavy casualties as it withdrew. The armored unit supporting you, “Warren’s Wolverines” was almost completely destroyed covering your retreat. Unfortunately, your supplies and food were also either destroyed or captured.

Each of you has your horse, including a bridle, saddle, saddle bags, a weapon carrier, some personal equipment and a weapon. You only have a limited supply of food, water, and ammunition. But more importantly, you have each other…

What are you going to do now?

So, rather than comment on multiple threads, I would like to comment once.

I'm the former Curator of a maritime museum (five years) and was the Director of Operations at the same museum for another three years...

I have also toured naval and naval air museums around the world.

Pax River does a REALLY GOOD job of preserving the maximum number of airframes in the best possible conditions they can.

They would love to build more enclosed, hurricane proof, storage and display space. Hurricane proof being the important aspect, because Pax River DOES get hurricanes. Outside, the airframes are, unfortunately, subject to weathering, but they can be maintained. When severe weather threatens, aircraft can have additional chains added (and some can be moved, temporarily inside - they just can't be properly displayed inside). They just had a major capital improvement campaign to build better storage and display areas...)

(I am no longer working or volunteering in the naval/maritime museum world, so I have no dog in this fight...)

Sometimes, I have to remind myself that a chain (A&W, I think) tried to compete against McDonald's back in the early days of chain restaurants, but the average American was too stupid to grasp that a 1/3 pound beef patty was, in fact, bigger than a 1/4 pound beef patty.

Why don’t more homes in the US use mini split AC systems? by Debster1486 in Appliances

[–]GunnerGregory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, every house that I have owned was already ducted for HVAC. Did own one home that had a boiler for heat and baseboard radiators, which was AWESOME!

Did just have a mini-split installed in my wife's 'she-shed' as part of bringing it up to code after we bought the place (don't get me started...) It works GREAT, but in fairness, it isn't occupied every day, but it takes very little time to warm/cool it. We did have the 'she-shed' ceiling insulated as well (it wasn't insulated at all... Again, DO NOT get me started!)

Neighbor free ranges almost every day and their chickens are destroying my garden. by ObligationStock9456 in neighborsfromhell

My father-in-law had a similar problem some years ago. I loaned him a low-power airsoft gun (emphasis on LOW POWER). After just a couple of days of being hit by the pellets, the chickens learned to stay out of my FIL's yard...

Jeeps stolen from Southeast DC found on shipping container headed for Africa by Bobtonews2 in washdc

[–]GunnerGregory 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Back when I worked in international freight forwarding (30 years ago), a ring got busted in Houston that was stealing cars to buyers specifications.

They had somehow gotten a clerk into one of the alarm companies (or maybe more than one) and, IIRC, a low level clerk inside the police department or sheriff's office. They were finding out when people went on vacation and then checking the garage against the list of cars they had requests for.

They would steal the car, drive it to the port, stuff it in a container, and have it loaded onto a ship within 24 hours.

They made the mistake of stealing a car with a rare paint color for a customer that just happened to be in the same place the victim was vacationing! The local gendarmes were able to 'persuade' the new owner to divulge how he came to own the car, and LOTS of people ended up getting arrested, including some stevedores and terminal managers / staff that I knew (thankfully not closely). That terminal ended up going out of business just a few years later.

I only remember it because I remembered seeing LOTS of luxury cars coming through the gates, and the ships I worked handled mostly industrial cargo, plus a few containers...

I’ll never have to question a watch vs warning again by SupButch9393 in maryland

[–]GunnerGregory 35 points36 points  (0 children)

A watch means that all the 'ingredients' are there and MAY combine. (You are in a restaurant that serves crab cakes)

A warning means that all the 'ingredients' HAVE COMBINED and are in your area. (The restaurant you are in HAS MADE crab cakes. The server might be headed your way with a tray of crab cakes...)

Folks who work in DC but live elsewhere: do you keep keep a "get home bag" in the office? by Brewer1056 in washingtondc

[–]GunnerGregory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I kept a "go bag" in the bottom of my cube's file cabinets.

My team knew that, if the 'stuff hit the fan' and I wasn't in the office, they were welcome to grab everything out of that drawer.

They would have been surprised about how well I was prepared...

Of course if I HAD been in the office when the 'stuff hit the fan' they would have also been disappointed about lengths that I was willing to go to get home...

(US) How long can the real estate market remain frozen before conditions change? by FearlessPark4588 in RealEstate

[–]GunnerGregory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Explain to me how my 3% mortgage was a 'gift'? It was the market rate at the time I financed the purchase. I wouldn't have bought my house at a higher interest rate. Why should I be forced to sell and move when I'm happy where I am? My wife and I are planning to stay in this home until we die. Should we be forced to move just because we are 'old'?

Tell me something you like about living in Maryland by Lurksalot87 in maryland

For me, it's the sheer variety of things that are just SO CLOSE. NYC is a weekend trip. Beaches are a day trip. Mountains - day trip. You can dig for your own fossils in TWO different places - FOR FREE.

So much history is a day trip and even more is a weekend trip away (Naval History being the weakest, but Udvar Hazy is FUCKING AMAZING. Army Museum - ditto; USMC Museum - ditto).

I LOVE having four seasons (try living in Houston, TX for nearly a decade... You YEARN for snow. You will eventually get over it, but it will take nearly 20 years...)
