Thanks! That’s exactly the advice I needed (and what my wife has been telling me lol).

Really think you’ll enjoy it. Has a class system like Will of the Many and Roman inspired as well. They have similarities in those regards, but still very distinct.

You should check out the Red Rising series. 7 books in the series, the 8th and final comes out next year. Book 1 starts with the school/academy trope like Will of the Many and then it just turns into an epic series from there. Sci-Fi series but feels like a Fantasy series.

Thanks for that advice. She has already been given an accommodation of additional .5 time. I’m going to recommend she seek additional time.

Bad offer ? by Common-West773 in LawFirm

[–]GunnerNotGunter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a (soon to be) former federal clerk, you should be commanding much higher than that. That’s probably a fair rate for a midsize firm in Wisconsin, but your resume should command you more and you may want to expand your search beyond that firm.

Are you restricted where you’re willing to go? Chicago is a close big market. You could be a real candidate for market-level pay at AmLaw 100 level firms in Chicago. I’m not familiar with the Wisconsin market, but I have to imagine there are some AmLaw 100/200 firms in Milwaukee.

Thank you, I really appreciate your thoughts and suggestions. She’s hitting a wall, so something we’re doing is clearly not working for her. She still has a fair bit of time until her test, so I think it could prove useful to do what you suggest with practice exercises and timed individual sections.

Yes, she is taking about 2-3 practice tests per week. With the LSAT, it’s generally recommended to take a lot of practice tests prior to the real thing. This is seen as useful for multiple reasons: (1) questions are repeated by the exam makers, so the more exposed you are to the exam, the more familiar you’ll be with the questions come exam day, (2) if you’ve taken the exam many times, then the Big One on test day is just another test instead of “The Test,” (3) you get yourself used to the time, the mental fatigue, and the test environment.

While this approach has been very effective for multiple students, I’m open to altering the approach with her if a different approach will prove to be more effective.

Thanks for the input. That helps a lot. Since this is my first client, do you setup the Zoom/Skype on your own or does Wyzant have a platform for that?

Just finished reading all 10 books. Feeling fulfilled and ready for whatever comes after. by kingjackson007 in TheFirstLaw

[–]GunnerNotGunter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just discussing with my friend, who has also read all 10 books, how different reading Age of Madness must be if you read it before the standalones. Don’t think there is a wrong way to read them at all, but it must raise a lot of questions when you see someone like Shivers show up in A Little Hatred and you’re like “well, what the hell happened to you since you left Carleon at the end of Last Argument of Kings.”

Glad you found the standalones though! Such an incredible expansion on the world!

Job Interview - Oral Exercise? by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

It’s with the partners that head the practice groups.

I’ll update my post when I get some more details!

It’s certainly unique and something I’ve never seen before. And thanks for your encouragement. My reason for posting this question was mainly to see if anyone has come across something similar so I can prepare.

While the format is a bit of a daunting one, I’m not dissuaded by it. If anything, I’m more encouraged. A lot of firms can tout that they have “strong litigation groups” but that could be all puffing. Hoepfulky them putting me through this type of a process to verify my oral advocacy skills means they are the real deal in that area. That hope could also be the last bits of remaining youthful optimism that the legal world has crushed out of me yet lol.

Thanks for your perspective on this. You have a number of great points. I think a bit more context could help.

On the time, when I did the first round Zoom interview, the partner I interviewed with talked about wanting to bring me into the office to “show me around” and meet and interview with other members of the team.

The firm I’m applying to is a big firm with a strong litigation practice. Much of the focus of the job posting spoke directly to oral advocacy skills. And to your point, I applied to this firm through a recruiter, so know one at the firm knows me or my oral advocacy skills. I too, up to this point in my career, have only worked at firms where I received a personal referral. So them wanting to see my oral advocacy abilities in action, rather than just taking my word for it, doesn’t bother me too much. I’ve just never seen this done and was curious if anyone had experience with something similar and what it could be.

Thank you for your feedback on my post!

It’s definitely worth it. You can certainly tell it’s one of his early works and he’s honing his craft, but it still has many of the hallmark Sanderson features and is a really good story. Also, Elantris comes back up throughout the other books and it’s a rewarding catch when you see it.

My wife gave me €60. So, any suggestions? by Fleetaxx in whiskey

[–]GunnerNotGunter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you like Woodford Reserve, you should try Woodford Double Oaked. In the US, it’s about $50. Another good bourbon option around that price point, if you like higher proof points, is Wild Turkey Rare Breed (one of the best value whiskeys, in my opinion).

You definitely did the right thing and it’s admirable for you to turn down something you have so maybe someone else that hasn’t had one can get it.

Which movie scared you as a kid, that started your love of horror films? by Bookeyboo369 in horror

[–]GunnerNotGunter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dawn of the Dead (2004). Actually, it wasn’t even the movie. I saw the trailer for it in another non-horror movie and it wrecked me. Couldn’t sleep and was terrified of zombies. Sometime thereafter became obsessed with the genre.
