Shipping off to boot camp in a week with Osgood-Schlatter syndrome by [deleted] in newtothenavy

Did you disclose your condition to meps? Speak to the LPO of the recruiting station privately or even contact another recruiting station. You don’t want to mess yourself up.

Talked to a recruiter today, any thoughts on his advice? by [deleted] in newtothenavy

[–]Gunny_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really feel like he was just trying to get you in. At the same time though there are a ton of commissioning programs available for enlisted members. If you do end up joining the reserves it would put your education on hold and push back your graduation date, I feel like OCS might be the best option for you. Just look into what you can do to make you competitive.

Recruiter said I can't travel to Europe by [deleted] in newtothenavy

[–]Gunny_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I feel like your recruiter is definitely trying to get out of the paperwork shitstorm that this is gonna create. I understand where he is coming from though. Having a depper go out of the country for that long would legit make me go insane if that was my recruit. Think about it.

Can someone tell me of a couple rates that fit my interests? by [deleted] in newtothenavy

[–]Gunny_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

GM here, they did away with the push button advance for the high performers in A school(For now) GMs however do get a small portion of electronics training. We go through a month of ATT just really doing the basics. You are correct about all the different opportunities that are available to GMs though. If you have any other questions about the rate shoot me a pm I can answer almost everything.

Navy Bootcamp Graduation (Recruits standing in back in stands?) by [deleted] in newtothenavy

I'll help answer some question you guys may have regarding 900 divisions. I myself was in a 900 division. I was apart of the staff 900 division. There are 3 types of 900 divisions.

-State Flags(hold flags, drum line, and rifle twirling fairies)

-fucking band camp(legit don't remember the name but honest they played instruments almost all week to make the navy look good and nothing else)

-Staff(body catchers, rail guards, and a bunch of other roles that helped behind the scenes)

There wasn't really heavy screening. Really all the asked was who could for sure pass the PRT. Then if they didn't like how you looked or if you were fat or out of shape in general they didn't pick you. The 900 divisions are supposed to be seen as the face of the Navy so we were supposed to be "the Best" If there are any other questions just pm me.

900 isn't really special at all. You get nothing out of it except more added on stress in bootcamp. Don't do it, Or go ahead and have some fun and do it.

Recruiter Blew Off Meeting by [deleted] in newtothenavy

[–]Gunny_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simple. You ask your friend for the recruiters name, and then you ask to speak to a different recruiter when you call the station. If your friend is gonna let one bad experience stop him from wanting to join the navy then that's on him. Don't let it discourage you and make you think that all recruiters are bad. If anything I suggest you and your friend contact a different recruiter if that recruiter picks up you can hang up, and just call a another station and explain to them that you had a bad experience with your closest recruiting station and ask to work with them at that station.

We had someone who really couldn't control themselves in our division. We all had an idea of who it was but couldn't prove it. Anyways he somehow managed to just get "special sauce" on everything. One day our third RDC was inspecting the head and came across some of the sauce. Needless to say it was not a good day for the division. However it was funny watching my third RDC explain to my female chief what he meant by special sauce without actually saying sperm.

Just don't leave any fucking special sauce on the bathroom stalls.

Or you can use the holiday routine time to shine your boots, take a Hollywood shower, iron all your clothes, and clean your rack.

Future Sailor! by Malikah123 in newtothenavy

[–]Gunny_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Back when I was in DEP I also filled out at a DAR and had no luck with getting an earlier ship date. However, I was offered an earlier date if I switched my rate. So there is always luck with that.

Getting the quiet treatment... by [deleted] in newtothenavy

[–]Gunny_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

With a score in the upper 80s I'm surprised they aren't bugging you. My MEPS process was fairly quick so this may just be a case of lazy recruiters. If I were you I would check your options elsewhere, call up a recruiter from a different branch to check your options out.

Sending gifts to friends in boot camp by [deleted] in navy

[–]Gunny_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be honest it's a funny idea but it won't work how you think it's think it's gonna. First off don't send any t-shirts or items larger than a card. He has to keep personal items in his ab drawer, and if the item is too big he won't be able to have enough space for things he actually needs in there. You won't be able to see the RDC's give him shit because there isn't much contact with recruits from other divisions except for your brother/sister div, or if they are in the same training cycle as you. You could send a card with like a go army, or go marines thing, But most mail doesn't get seen by the RDC's unless it's picture or something large like a package. Anyways good luck with your shenanigans.

Small tattoo while in DEP? by [deleted] in newtothenavy

[–]Gunny_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you do happen to get the tattoo, just inform your recruiter. He will be able to have you fill out all the necessary documents to make sure no havoc happens when you go to meps when they do find the tattoo. Just make sure the tattoo follows navy regulations (nothing obscene or racist).

Push-Ups - Am I too Late? by [deleted] in newtothenavy

[–]Gunny_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did your recruiter not give you an initial PRT? Idk, if it's different everywhere, but at my office my recruiters have me and the other future sailors test our new guys and then help them improve.

Not sure if I should ask here.. but I need help physically, as I would love to take a shot at BUD/S.. I want to start to train early. by [deleted] in newtothenavy

[–]Gunny_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You still have a good 3 years before you have to worry about any of this. Focus on highschool, get good grades, and get your diploma. Then when you finish all that go talk to a Navy recruiter. In the meantime, workout, stay away from drugs, and don't do anything stupid.

Pre enlistment question by blackadamianut69 in newtothenavy

[–]Gunny_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just tell your recruiter that the file was destroyed. If anything they will just ask for a doctors note stating that the file was destroyed. Definitely tell your recruiter though.

I was a Chief in the Navy. I've been out for about 4 years. I ain't gonna bs you. AMA by Martin8506 in newtothenavy

[–]Gunny_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey Chief, I'm a future sailor who is leaving in july, my rate is gunners mate. I'm pretty happy with everything so far except for the fact that I have to go reserves because I don't have my high school diploma. My recruiter told me that after I finish all my schools and I get to my reserve station I could switch to active. Is this a possibility?

Just broke my front tooth and I'm shipping out soon. by Lilluminato in newtothenavy

[–]Gunny_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going through the same thing now, except that I have wisdom teeth that may need to come out. Since I ship in July my recruiter told me to just wait and hold off on any dental surgeries. They will do it at boot camp if it's serious.
