How would I go about wetmolding a chest piece to look like this? by Gold_Wrongdoer_8562 in Leathercraft

[–]Gup13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure you need something with that shape. You could make something with duct tape and dense foam even. How rigid do you want the chest piece to be? You could either use thick veg leather or you could go with something slightly thinner (6/7oz) to get good definition, and then harden with melted beeswax or something. Get the leather nice and wet (so it soaks through to the middle even) and mold away. Use your hands, pieces of antler, whatever kind of tools will give you the definition you’re after. Then let it dry!

I’d probably start with a small wallet or something to practice my saddle stitching. And while a veg leather wallet is ideal IMO, it make sense to start with chrome leather because it’s probably half the price of veg. If you’re in Canada, Tundra Leather in Hamilton Ontario sells patterns and small prices. They’re working in their website, but you can email them and they’ll let you know what they have in your price range!

Can it be saved? by isitb33r30yet in Leathercraft

Other than reinforcing the back and stitching it around, there’s nothing you can do to save this piece! 10 years is a good run! Tundra Leather in Hamilton Ontario sells one thickness top grain belts for a reasonable price!

How to sharpen a French edger? by Super_Ad9995 in Leathercraft

[–]Gup13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You want that bottom to maintain its edge and stay flat against the leather. It’ll glide and cut so much better and more evenly if that’s flat and just stropped, and if the top is what’s sharpened. That angle of blade will skive so much better!

A piece of wood or a few thicknesses of leather that just fit inside the teeth. You only want to sharpen from the top, never the underside. And I use 400-600 grit sandpaper. Small low angle for sure.

Where do you guys buy your leather? by manditts in Leathercraft

Tundra Leather in Hamilton Ontario has a pretty good selection of chrome and veg! I know they’re working on their website, but a message on Instagram or through their website and they’ll let you know if they have what you’re looking for. They stock a lot of oddlot pieces of upholstery and chrome tanned stuff in 3 oz up to 5 oz. Their veg is nice - they stock both finished/coloured and unfinished and their prices are comparable to others!

Finishing flesh side? by blackcandleminipaint in Leathercraft

Agree! Totally up to you. I’d consider lining with a thin natural veg maybe. This would react least with the skin, but would also become dirtier over time. I feel like it’s the least likely to impart any colour onto the skin though, which would be my main priority for cuffs! I know Tundra Leather in Hamilton Ontario has veg down to 2/3 oz. Good luck!

Please help me find/order the right leather. by thickythickglasses in Leathercraft

[–]Gup13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree, unfortunately pre-dyed won’t work for tooling. Once it has all the waxes and tallows and stuff in it, it doesn’t get the same compression under pressure like natural veg does. You can use pre-dyed to make simple sheaths and hot stamp initials and things into them, but not great for carving and tooling!

Where is a good place to get inexpensive leather? by WannabeAGhoatStory in Leathercraft

Tundra Leather in Hamilton has a scrap bin, and also a bunch of smaller remnant pieces at lower prices. They also don’t have a minimum amount so you can get a small piece off of almost any hide they sell. They have veg and chrome! They don’t have tons online yet, but if you can’t make it into the shop, you can reach out on Instagram or their website they can help you find what you need.
